Mission

PEERS mission is to build a diverse community of people with mental health experiences who provide culturally responsive, peer-based wellness strategies and work together to eliminate stigma and discrimination.

Peers was developed and incorported to serve clients, communities, and systems of care committed to the wellness and recovery vision. This vision recognizes that recovery and system change is better achieved by collaboration and partnership between consumers, providers, family members, and the community at large. Peers' mission is to offer new solutions for wellness and lead by example that mental health recovery is possible.the heart of peers resides in and depends on the emerging wellness and recovery vision. This vision recognizes that those mental health clients and those dealing with dual diagnosis issues, can and do live full and meaningful lives, or, can "recover". Recovery to us means that if appropriate social supports are available, and there are opportunities for participation in care, recovery is not only possible but likely as that person continues to take personal responsibility for their own wellness!the ideal, for peers, is to create positive system change and increase

IRS990/Desc0PEERS Program Description and AccomplishmentsFY 2015/2016Everyone Counts Campaign (ECC)The Everyone Counts Campaign addresses discrimination and social exclusion by engaging key stakeholder groups unserved, under-served, and inappropriately served ethnic mental health services consumers and their family members and communities, and power group members, those in positions to positively impact discriminatory practices and policies. It convenes these individuals into Action Teams to uncover, highlight, and to reduce the effects of mental health discrimination for mental health consumers. From July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016, the Everyone Counts Campaign served over 3,194 Alameda County residents, raising awareness about mental health issues, the impact of stigma, and sharing tools and resources for recovery in Alameda County. Campaign activities included the following projects: ECC Communications (website and media alerts)Chinese-American Program Internalized Stigma ReductionLEVS Speakers BureauSpiritualityReflections and Expressions General Public Outreach ECC Communications include the Everyone Counts Campaign website (www.everyonecountscampaign.com) and bi-monthly media alerts on mental health topics. Outreach statistics include:Year-to-date website page views: 4610 views Total actions taken (measured by sessions on sites): 1778 sessions Total subscribers to the ECC mailing list: 347 subscribers Total subscribers on the PEERS mailing list: 1934Average open rate: 19.64% 52 outreach events, with ECC brochures and ECC buttons distributed 18 media alerts topics include: suicide prevention awareness topics; How Can We Better Support Youth with Trauma Histories in the Juvenile Justice System; and Join Alameda County BHCS in honoring National Mental Health Day of PrayerChinese-American internalized stigma reduction group and research activities. This project included, community-based, innovative, evidence-based internalized stigma reduction group in the Chinese-American Cantonese speaking community. A PEERS staff person, peer group co-lead and clinician group co-lead partnered with Dr. Larry Yang, a researcher to conduct the following activities:4 Quarterly CAAT Meetings2 Cultural Responsive Trainings 12 weeks of Cantonese Peer Support Internalized Stigma Reduction Group Meetings12 weeks of English Peer Support Internalized Stigma Reduction Group Meetings4 Post-support group activitiesThe Lift Every Voice & Speak (LEVS) Speakers Bureau is a group of individuals, with diverse backgrounds, interests, talents, and aspirations, who have both lived experience of stigma and discrimination related to mental health and on how to build and maintain wellness. Activities included:24 individuals on the Roster24 LEVS and Toastmasters meetings 10 public speaking engagements reaching 251 audience members4 quarterly surveys completed by participants. Spirituality programs through the Everyone Counts Campaign maintain a high level of respect for the many, varied cultural values, traditions, beliefs, practices, and preferences of individuals living with mental health challenges and their families, communities and organizations. For many consumers and their families, spirituality is an essential element in an integrated approach to resilience, wellness, and recovery.1 Day of Prayer with over 20 people attending8 Peer-Facilitated Spirituality Gatherings with an average of 6 people attending each group Reflections and Expressions groups are art-based workshops that provide enjoyable and accessible opportunities to enhance wellness through creative expression for people with a wide variety of interests, skill levels, experience, mobility, and backgrounds. 5 Reflection and Expression groups that included the following activities:Mask MakingRoots Cultural AwarenessVision BoardsCultural Shield CreationPainting/CanvasGeneral public outreach includes tabling at large community events as well as sponsoring community events.
