Mission and Program Overview

Mission

PEERS mission is to build a diverse community of people with mental health experiences who provide culturally responsive, peer-based wellness strategies and work together to eliminate stigma and discrimination.

Peers was developed and incorporated to serve clients, communities, and systems of care committed to the wellness and recovery vision. This vision recognizes that recovery and system change is better achieved by collaboration and partnership between consumers, providers, family members, and the community at large. Peers' mission is to offer new solutions for wellness and lead by example that mental health recovery is possible.the heart of peers resides in and depends on the emerging wellness and recovery vision. This vision recognizes that those mental health clients and those dealing with dual diagnosis issues, can and do live full and meaningful lives, or, can "recover". Recovery to us means that if appropriate social supports are available, and there are opportunities for participation in care, recovery is not only possible but likely as that person continues to take personal responsibility for their own wellness!the ideal, for peers, is to create positive system change and increase

IRS990/Desc0PEERS Program Description and AccomplishmentsFY 2018/2019Everyone Counts Campaign (ECC):The Everyone Counts Campaign addresses discrimination and social exclusion against people with mental health challenges by engaging key stakeholder groups: unserved, under-served, and inappropriately served mental health services consumers and their family members in specific racial/ethnic communities, and those in positions to positively impact discriminatory practices and policies. It convenes these individuals into Action Teams to uncover, highlight, and to reduce the effects of discrimination for mental health consumers. From July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019, the Everyone Counts Campaign reached over 4,000 Alameda County residents, raising awareness about mental health issues, the impact of stigma, and sharing tools and resources for recovery in Alameda County. Campaign activities included the following projects: 1.African American Everyone Counts Campaign2.Lift Every Voice and Speak Speakers Bureau3.Spirituality and Healing Arts4.General Public Outreach5.Online Communications (website, social media, and media alerts)This was the planning year of a two-year Everyone Counts anti-stigma campaign focused on the African American community. A highlight was the formation and growth of Action Team, which comprised 16 members, all of whom are African American mental health stakeholders (mental health consumers, family members, or providers). The Action Team set the campaigns focus: enlisting members of the music and entertainment communities to work against mental health stigma. We are in the process of recruiting influential artists and media producers to the campaign, including Mistah Fab, So Oakland, and KPFA. PEERS promoted the campaign using local media, including interviews on the radio stations KBLX and KPFA. The Action also began the process of revising the Ending Self-Stigma curriculum to make it more relevant to African Americans. The Lift Every Voice & Speak (LEVS) Speakers Bureau is a group of individuals with diverse backgrounds, interests, talents, and aspirations, who have lived experience of both stigma and discrimination related to mental health and building and maintaining wellness. Activities included:1.30 mental health consumers were active members of the speakers bureau2.21 meetings for members, providing peer support and training and coaching on sharing their personal stories3.18 public speaking engagements, reaching nearly 400 community membersSpirituality programs through the Everyone Counts Campaign maintain a high level of respect for the many, varied cultural values, traditions, beliefs, practices, and preferences of individuals living with mental health challenges and their families, communities and organizations. For many mental health consumers and their families, spirituality is an essential element in an integrated approach to resilience, wellness, and recovery.1.Six peer-facilitated Spirituality and Healing Arts groups reaching 37 people2.A highly successful public event for the National Mental Health Day of Prayer that included a diverse array of speakers, music, an art activity, and distribution of promotional materials.General public outreach included attending 24 community events and activities to promote Everyone Counts Campaign programs and share mental health and wellness resources. PEERS reached approximately 1,600 people through outreach; these events included some of the following activities: 1.21st Annual Dia de los Muertos Festival2.10x10 We Move For Health3.Oakland Pride4.Healing Hearts 5K Walk Run for Suicide Prevention, Oakland Ca5.Day of Healing6.Chabot College Disability Awareness DayECC Communications include the Everyone Counts Campaign website (www.everyonecountscampaign.com) and bi-monthly media alerts on mental health topics that are sent to nearly 2,500 subscribers.
