Mission and Program Overview

Mission

PEERS mission is to build a diverse community of people with mental health experiences who provide culturally responsive, peer-based wellness strategies and work together to eliminate stigma and discrimination.

Peers was developed and incorported to serve clients, communities, and systems of care committed to the wellness and recovery vision. This vision recognizes that recovery and system change is better achieved by collaboration and partnership between consumers, providers, family members, and the community at large. Peers' mission is to offer new solutions for wellness and lead by example that mental health recovery is possible.the heart of peers resides in and depends on the emerging wellness and recovery vision. This vision recognizes that those mental health clients and those dealing with dual diagnosis issues, can and do live full and meaningful lives, or, can "recover". Recovery to us means that if appropriate social supports are available, and there are opportunities for participation in care, recovery is not only possible but likely as that person continues to take personal responsibility for their own wellness!the ideal, for peers, is to create positive system change and increase

IRS990/Desc0PEERS Program Description and AccomplishmentsFY 2014/2015Social Inclusion/Everyone Counts CampaignThe Social Inclusion Campaign works to eliminate the stigma against people with mental health issues in Alameda County. From July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015, the Social Inclusion Campaign reached out to over 1,900 Alameda County residents, raising awareness about mental health issues, the impact of stigma, and sharing tools and resources for recovery in Alameda County. This year the campaign was renamed the Everyone Counts Campaign and made a special effort to promote collaborative relationships between primary care doctors and people with mental health lived experiences. The campaign also partnered with the Chinese-American community and implemented an innovative, evidence-based internalized stigma group in the Chinese-American Cantonese speaking community to reduce internal and external stigma. PEERS also certified 4 members of the Chinese-American community to run WRAP groups in FY14/15. The Lift Every Voice & Speak Speakers Bureau spoke on mental health recovery and stigma at 10 public community events in Alameda County, and maintains a roster of 20 members who are open about their mental health and recovery experiences for the purpose of educating other community members and providers. The participants also attended a Coming Out Proud training, focused on the benefits of sharing your personal story to assist in the recovery of others and reducing stigma around mental health. To deliver our anti-stigma messages to the public, we partnered with HHREC and held our third 10 x 10 Walk/Move for Health at Lake Merritts Bandstand area on May 29, 2015. Over 500 people participated in the daylong event that included a farmers market with free vegetables and fruit, walk, yoga, Zumba, stationary bike fitness bus, and a Kids Zone for youth to experience activities to maintain their wellness. There was an Empowerment Zone in which people could walk a labyrinth for self-reflection. Community members also spoke about their recovery and eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health. Over twenty local organizations shared their information on mental and physical health services to participants. Client Stakeholder Project The Client Stakeholder Project (CSP) aids in the development of client stakeholders throughout California to attend and participate in Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission (MHSOAC) meetings. The project convenes focus groups to research what counties are doing to effectively engage stakeholders in decision-making processes. Best practices will be identified and a curriculum will then be developed in order to help train stakeholders on how to become involved with the development of policy related to mental health. The CSP concluded data collection, inventory, and evaluation plan, and continued to work with Resource Development Associates (RDA) to develop best practices and curriculum to train client stakeholders how to be most effectively involved in county community planning processes for MHSA-funded mental health services. The CSP also continued developing the Client Expert Pool, and began planning for the four regional trainings for client stakeholders.Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP)Wellness Recovery Action Plan or WRAP, is PEERS signature consumer empowerment program and is now recognized by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as an evidence-based practice. Since PEERS founding in 2001, we have provided WRAP trainings and services to more than 17,000 participants in Alameda County, and introduced WRAP to over 400 consumers, family members, and mental health providers in this fiscal year alone. In December of 2014, PEERS hosted a WRAP Seminar II facilitator training to increase the number of people who are qualified to facilitate WRAP groups. 16 people were trained and in the next fiscal year will continue to be mentored to complete preparation
