| IRS990/Description | 0 | In 2012, The Parents' Campaign (TPC) focused on engaging the public in the legislative process, with the goal of moving forward policies that improve Mississippi's public schools.Communication & Outreach: To further its goal of improving the state's public education system, TPC worked cooperatively with a number of education groups, including Parents for Public Schools. TPC participated in approximately 141 meetings, which involved more than 11,000 people. Approximately 1,000 people attended 29 speaking engagements in which TPC presented programs. Publications and television interviews that resulted from TPC speaking engagements reached approximately 90,000 additional people. TPC continued its membership services, including providing regular email updates to inform members of legislation and policy issues affecting education in Mississippi. A primary service TPC provides to its membership and to the public at large is open access to the extensive information housed in the TPC website. Updating, organizing and expanding the online information resources was a priority in 2012.Public Engagement Tools: TPC provided online public engagement tools designed to allow TPC members to identify and contact all of the legislators who represent a given school district and to view information specific to the district, such as the level of underfunding for the current year and the district's accountability ratings. An individual voting record page is provided for each legislator, showing the percentage of times that the legislator has voted in agreement with TPC's position on TPC priority bills since 2006. These tools have been used by thousands of TPC members and have received very positive reviews from school district personnel, parents and teachers.Legislative Action: During the 2012 Legislative Session, TPC tracked policy decisions and lawmakers' actions by attending weekly meetings of legislative committees and monitoring House and Senate floor debates and votes. Members of The Parents' Campaign influenced legislative action by calling and emailing their legislators, writing letters to editors of newspapers, organizing meetings, and recruiting other concerned citizens to join their efforts.TPC's successes included: Senate Bill 2737, which allows parents of students in school districts that lose accreditation to request a legal transfer to an accredited district, a step toward the goal of ensuring that every Mississippi child have access to an excellent public school; Senate Bill 2792, which allows students to be dually enrolled in high school completion courses and in a community college credential certificate or degree program, a move that should improve Mississippi's graduation rate and ensure that more students graduate from high school workplace-ready; the defeat of House Bill 1101, the UPSTART bill, which would have allowed state funding to be used to purchase computers for an online preschool system run by an out-of-state organization with a poor track record of performance; and the defeat of charter school legislation that did not limit charter schools to areas with chronically low performing traditional schools and did not require high quality standards for charter management organizations. After the session, TPC continued to monitor and contribute to policy discussions and planning by meeting with legislative and statewide leaders to share research on education best practices, express our priorities, and suggest policy initiatives.TPC does not endorse or oppose candidates for public office and does not contribute to candidates' campaigns. |
