Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of the parents' campaign is to ensure a brighter future for mississippi children by promoting better public schools through parent advocacy. The organization informs parents of legislation that affects schools, helps them identify and contact their own legislators, and report to them about how their legislators vote on bills that determine the level of education offered their children. By giving parents a means by which their voices can be heard, the organization is working to change mississippi for the better.

IRS990/Description0In 2011 , The Parents' Campaign (TPC) focused on engaging the public in the electoral and legislative process. At the beginning of the 2011 Legislative Session, TPC unveiled a series of online public engagement tools. The new tools allow TPC members to identify and contact all of the legislators who represent a given school district and to view information specific to the district, such as the level of underfunding for the current year and the district's accountability ratings. An individual voting record page is provided for each legislator, showing the percentage of times that the legislator has voted in agreement with TPC's position on TPC priority bills since 2006. These tools have been used by thousands of TPC members and have received very positive reviews from school district personnel, parents, and teachers. During the 2011 Legislative Session, TPC tracked policy decisions and lawmakers' actions by attending weekly meetings of legislative committees and monitoring House and Senate floor debates.Members of The Parents' Campaign influenced legislative action by calling and emailing their legislators, writing letters to editors of newspapers, organizing meetings, and recruiting other concerned citizens to join their efforts. After the session, TPC continued to monitor and contribute to policy discussions and planning by meeting with legislative and statewide leaders to share research on education best practices, express our priorities, and suggest policy initiatives. With a statewide election scheduled for 2011 (for all 174 legislative districts and all statewide offices), TPC worked to provide a public forum through which candidates could share with voters their positions on education issues. To this end, TPC developed a proprietary Candidate Q&A that was mailed and emailed to more than 500 candidates in statewide and legislative races (all candidates for whom contact information could be obtained). The Candidate Q&A was based on input from our members, who were given the opportunity to submit their own questions for candidates to answer; those questions were compiled and the most frequently asked questions were included in the final Q&A. It was a comprehensive document that asked candidates to respond to 18 questions about various education issues in Mississippi. None of the questions could be answered with a simple "yes" or "no."TPC received good participation from candidates, including many who were very detailed in their answers and took the opportunity to share new ideas, facts, and research. Their unedited responses, in full, were posted online in a Candidate Q&A database that was made public in late June, prior to the primary elections in August. Candidates who lost their primary races wereremoved from the database and remaining candidates who had not previously participated in the Q&A were contacted by phone, email, and postal mail with an invitation to complete a Q&A prior to the general election. Responses were received by TPC continually through the day before the November election. All were posted online; candidates were given permission to share the Candidate Q&A link in their campaign materials. All major candidates in the races for governor and lieutenant governor participated in the Q&A. Links to their responses, along with those of legislative candidates, were publicized through emails, Facebook, Twitter, and TPC's website. The Candidate Q&A pages received thousands of website hits from late June through November. To further its goal of improving the state's public education system, TPC worked cooperatively with a number of education groups, including Parents for Public Schools. TPC participated in approximately 382 meetings, which involved more than 10,000 people. Approximately 2,725 people attended 30 speaking engagements in which TPC presented programs. Publications andtelevision interviews that resulted from TPC speaking engagements reached approximately 103,500 additional people.TPC continued its membersh
