FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A, PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

long-form reporting, and our twice-a-week public affairs show. This includes our Voter Voices series talking with voters in each of the counties about the issues driving their vote in Floridas March primary. We then checked in with voters in the seven counties along Floridas I-4 Corridor, which includes four counties in our listening area, to find out who will get their vote for president and why. The Pulse nightclub shooting lead to expanded coverage that included in-depth segments throughout the day in the week following the shooting, expanding our talk show to four shows that week (carried statewide), increased number of daily newscasts and extensive reporting on Twitter and Facebook. For Hurricane Matthew, we went wall-to-wall for several hours before and during the storm. During that coverage, we checked in with emergency management officials and residents riding out the storm in the coastal counties of Volusia and Brevard, and reporters visited those communities after the storm to report on the damage. On election night, we had reporters embedded in three of our six primary counties (Orange, Seminole and Brevard) reporting live from those counties with results and on-scene reports. Our public affairs show Intersection takes calls from listeners for the first segment of the Friday broadcast. These calls come from both sides of the issues and often from more than one of the six counties in our primary coverage area. The host has traveled to Brevard County to find out more about a massive fish kill in the Indian River Lagoon, spoke with Volusia Countys newly elected sheriff, and checked in with Latino voters, Cubans in a post-Castro world, leaders of a nonprofit for the blind, and a former school teacher tutoring at-risk kids. Our newsroom also continues to focus on the struggling, historically black community of Eatonville as it grapples with gentrification. We filed several stories both for daily newscasts and in-depth features looking at the role of Latino voters in the election. And we continue to report on LGBT issues in the wake of the Pulse shooting. Reporters have boosted their use of Twitter as a primary reporting tool while covering stories out in the field. The Intersection team uses Facebook Live to promote the show and elicit questions from listeners. The newsroom has increased its production of video segments for the stations Facebook page, which elements are often heavily shared. In-person engagement included a partnership with Valencia Colleges Peace & Justice Institute featuring the stations Friends Talking Faith hosts. This Speaker Series event brought students, community leaders, faith community leaders and others together to explore issues surrounding acceptance, diversity and tolerance. WMFE boosted its partnership with other public radio stations in the state with three series of in-depth feature reporting, simulcasting of our public affairs show in the days following the Pulse nightclub shooting, and the collaborative, statewide, call-in program that ran for ten weeks, most of it leading up to the November election. The feature series included: a series in May on hurricanes in Florida, a look before the August primary at the five candidates running for U.S. Senate, and more than a half-dozen stories looking at the issues facing voters ahead of the November election. We also utilized our partnership with News 13 to simulcast their signal during parts of our Pulse and Hurricane Matthew coverage. Through Health News Florida, WMFE collaborated with stations on Zika coverage. WMFE has also used its participation at University of Central Florida internship fairs to recruit for its internship program. The newsroom internship program has been recently rebooted, and so far we have brought four interns into our newsroom through our participation with the UCF event. All four of those interns are from minority communities. Reporters from the newsroom also made many appearances in the community to connect with a d

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The endowment funds are used to bolster the services and programming provided to wmfe's audience.

PART X, LINE 2:

The Company is exempt from federal income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and from state income taxes under similar provisions of the Florida Statutes. The Company identifies and evaluates uncertain tax positions, if any, and recognizes the impact of uncertain tax positions for which there is a less than more-likely-than-not probability of the position being upheld when reviewed by the relevant taxing authority. Such positions are deemed to be unrecognized tax benefits and a corresponding liability is established on the statement of financial position. The Company has not recognized a liability for uncertain tax positions. If there were an unrecognized tax benefit, the Company would recognize interest accrued related to unrecognized tax benefits in interest expense and penalties in operating expenses. The Companys open tax years subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service generally remain open for three years from the date of filing.
