Governance Explanations

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 7B

Per state statute, the board of directors of the organization is approved by the district school board.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 11B

A draft of the form 990 is provided to all board members prior to filing. The draft form 990 is reviewed by the treasurer, the executive director and the accountant at a finance committee meeting with the return preparer and approved before filing.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 12C

Any violations of the conflict of interest policy are handled by the executive committee of the board of directors.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15A

The finance committee met to conduct a pay comparability study using the 2015 central florida nonprofit compensation and benefits report as a basis. The committee recommended a competitive salary for the executive director to be included in the budget for the fiscal year; the recommended salary moves toward the board's strategic goal of compensating at no less than the 75th percentile. Approval of the salaries was included in the board discussion of the budget, which was approved by the board of directors.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15B

The process described above for compensation of the executive director also included consideration of the compensation for all other staff positions.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 19

The foundation's organizing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements are available to the public at its office.

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Brevard schools foundation is the direct-support, non-profit organization which matches community resources with the needs of brevard public schools in order to enhance public education k-12. Ranked in the top ten nationally for its support of public education, the foundation has provided more than 43 million in benefit since 1987.

Form 990, Page 1, Part I, Line 6

Volunteers are made up of 23 board members, 25 office volunteers, 50 special event/classroom grant & scholarship reviewers, 21 take stock in children (tsic) leadership council, 142 tsic mentors, 50 tsic events volunteers, and 186 supply zone/back to school volunteers.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4D

Supply zone for teachers established in 2014, the supply zone for teachers is a resource center that provides free school supplies for teachers to use in the classroom. By focusing on low-income and homeless student populations, the supply zone works to ensure that all children have access to the necessary school supplies despite their circumstances. Students no longer have to feel disconnected, embarrassed, and unprepared when they come to school without supplies; the tools they need to succeed are ready and waiting for them in the classroom. During the 2015-2016 school year, the supply zone hosted 727 teachers for 1,039 teacher shopping visits that benefited an estimated 18,513 students. With an average shopping trip worth 391 (retail value), teachers received more than 406,488 in distributed product - a 41% increase from the previous year. In addition to serving teachers at 18 high-poverty schools, the supply zone also held special shopping events. The shop from the heart event benefited homeless student liaison teachers at every school in the district, and a literacy event distributed brand new books to fifty high-poverty schools. During the summer, the supply zone organized and hosted an annual back to school giveaway event to distribute backpacks, free supplies, and hot lunches directly to students enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program. Approximately 1,600 students received 73,600 worth of school supplies at the 2015 back to school giveaway event. In january 2016, the supply zone was accepted as an affiliate of the kids in need foundation, a national non-profit organization that distributes free school supplies to teacher resource centers nationwide. Within the first few months of membership, the supply zone received several large donations of supplies worth a total retail value of 383,800.
