FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Principal activities human services network, inc. D/b/a meals on wheels south florida (the "organization") is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization and was incorporated on september 17, 1984, under the laws of the state of florida. In the beginning, the organization was primarily founded for the purpose of contracting for older americans act (oaa) senior nutrition program funding through the florida department of elder affairs, the areawide council on aging and the area agency on aging of broward county (aaabc). This funding allows the organization to provide nutritious meals at no cost to adults age sixty and better throughout broward county, florida, through the use of federal oaa title iii c-1 (congregate meal), c-2 (home-delivered meal), c2 and 3b screening and assessment and c1/c2 nutrition education funding. As additional needs/opportunities were identified, the organization expanded programs and services to better serve the community. The oaa funding that once comprised 100% of the organization's annual budget is now less than 68% of the annual operating budget. Other programs that have been developed include: 1) meals for medicaid managed long term care clients, begun in the early 1990's and changed by the state in 2013 to a privately contracted service with managed care providers; 2) meals for companion pets program, begun in 1999 and continues to be completely volunteer and donation driven; 3) meals to broward homebound partnership clients with disabilities, 2006-2011; 4) complete cuisine, a paid home- delivered gourmet meal program, begun in 2006; 5) the volunteer shopping program, begun in 2006; 6) senior health now health education and wellness program, 2010-2012; 7) the summer break spot child nutrition program, begun in 2014; 8) the chefs for seniors program, 2017-2019; and 9) independently funded meal programs from community development block grants (cdbg), foundations, and corporations that are designed to provide meals to targeted communities, community sectors, holocaust survivors, and individuals who would otherwise be stranded on the waiting list for federally-funded home-delivered meals. These programs have facilitated a broader and deeper community presence and ability to meet the needs of a more diversified cross section of the community. Furthermore, the diversified funding streams, including foundations, grants and individual contributions, has helped to ensure the strong financial stability of the organization, which is now somewhat less vulnerable to the impacts of potential cuts to oaa funding at the federal level. In june of 2016, the organization re-branded to follow the national trademark and changed our name from broward meals on wheels to meals on wheels south florida, understanding that we now serve clients in the larger south florida tri- county area through these additional programs and services. An extremely dedicated volunteer workforce of more than 600 volunteers forms the heart and the backbone of the programs and services of meals on wheels south florida. Only through the caring efforts of these committed volunteers and the dedicated staff of 24 full time and 21 part time employees, is the organization able to serve 10,000 senior clients and 20,000 children each year with compassion and dignity across all of south florida. The coronavirus pandemic brought many challenges and changes to the organization and to all that the organization serves. On march 13, 2020, the organization closed all 34 of the congregate meal sites in an abundance of caution to protect clients, volunteers, and staff from covid. Within 2 days, all congregate meal clients were converted to home delivery. The huge spike in demand for home delivered meals from the stay-at-home orders and shutdown demanded swift and effective intervention. In response to this crisis, the organization was able to increase the number of home delivered meal clients 300% within days. What was initially thought to be a limited shif

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES HUMAN SERVICES NETWORK, INC.
