Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Camp kudzu's mission is to educate, empower and inspire children and teens living with diabetes. Through its camp and other educational programs, camp kudzu changes young people's lives. Without the lessons learned and practiced at camp kudzu, many children lack access to diabetes self-management support and would have increased risk for serious medical complications and/or shortened life spans. Camp kudzu is a non-profit organization which began providing medical self-management education, recreation and peer-networking programs in the year 2000. It was formed in 1999 in atlanta, georgia by parents, doctors, health professionals and community leaders who joined forces to establish programs to support the developmental and medical needs of children with type 1 diabetes in a fun environment marked by clinical oversight and direction.

IRS990/Desc0In summer 2016, Camp Kudzu served 622 children and youth with type 1 diabetes during our three one-week overnight camping sessions. Participants ranging from age 8 through 17 participated in a mix of physically exertive activities and quieter pursuits. They conferred with clinical staff regarding diabetes management at least 4 times daily. They spent time with others who are just like them in learning about and coping with diabetes, and were under the supervision of mentors. Each session, over 10,000 blood sugars were checked, over 400 pump sites were changed and over 190,000 carbohydrates were counted. 38% of summer campers received scholarships. 367 new diabetes self-management skills were documented including the ability to check a blood sugar, draw up insulin and calculate insulin dose to cover carbohydrates and account for activity. 339 volunteers served as cabin counselors, clinical staff, activity leaders and in other camp positions. 89 of our volunteers were graduates of our programs, having been campers in their youth. The theme for education in 2016 was "Putting the puzzle together: managing diabetes," communicating the importance of AADE's seven self-care behaviors.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Camp Kudzu hosted two family weekend camps, one each in the spring and fall. These weekend programs served families with newly diagnosed children or children too young to attend summer camp, as well as families who need ongoing support since their children's diabetes has no cure or end date. At family weekend camps, the children enjoyed the fun of camp while the whole family received vital diabetes management education and coping skills for family and school life. Medical professionals were on site throughout the weekend to deliver diabetes management information and to answer specific questions about diet, activity, and emerging trends in glycemic control. Families had the chance to connect and develop friendships that can sustain them long after the weekend ends. Camp Kudzu served 71 families, and 37% received scholarships.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Camp Kudzu continued to offer our teen weekend program. The Coed Program was a winter "high adventure trip" which taught campers how to adapt one's diabetes regimen for new exertion levels. It was also the setting for leadership and team building skills and for gaining an appreciation of the natural environment. 35 teens were served. The scholarship rate for teen programs was 31%. New evening programs were introduced, and in 2016, the trip lasted one less day than in 2015. We introduced snow tubing, which was enjoyed by all!

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0Camp Kudzu conducted a week-long day camp program to educate and empower the youngest children living with type 1 diabetes. This camp setting encourages a child's sense of wonder and enables all to enjoy a variety of active pursuits. Through this experience, the young children learned about nature and gain skills in caring for their own health. Many were just starting their journey with diabetes. 35 children attended and 17% received a scholarship. 45 golden awards were granted to children in this program.
