Activity 2

Camp kudzu hosted two family camps, one each in the spring and fall. The children enjoyed the fun of camp while the whole family received important diabetes management education and coping skills for family and school life. Medical professionals were on site throughout the weekend to provide information and to answer specific questions about diet, activity and emerging trends in glycemic control. This year we saw growth in the numbers of newly diagnosed families in this program. We served 65 families, and granted scholarships to 58% of the participants. Families connected and developed friendships that can sustain them long after the weekend ends.

Activity 3

We expanded teen weekend programs to include a coed winter event. The fall teen girls' retreat addressed the social and emotional needs of girls grappling with diabetes and teen issues. Program content ranged from technical diabetes management and nutrition skills to stress reduction techniques and leadership training. The coed winter event taught campers responsibility for the physical, social and emotional environment of the group as well as one's self, how to adapt one's diabetes regimen for new exertion levels, and stressed an appreciation of the natural environment. 67 teens participated, and 33% received scholarships to do so.
