| IRS990/Desc | 0 | THE SYMPHONY HAS THREE MAIN SERIES OF PERFORMANCES: MASTERWORKS, POPS, AND CHAMBER MUSIC. THE MASTERWORK SERIES IS DEVOTED TO PERFORMANCES OF THE GREATEST ORCHESTRAL WORKS COMPOSED OVER THE PAST FOUR CENTURIES. POPS FEATURES THE ORCHESTRA IN A LESS FORMAL SETTING AND IS FOCUSED MORE ON LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT AND FAMILY FRIENDLY PROGRAMMING. THE CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES FEATURES CSO CORE MUSICIANS IN MORE INTIMATE SETTINGS PERFORMING THE WORLD'S GREATEST CHAMBER MUSIC REPERTOIRE.BOTH THE MASTERWORKS AND THE POPS SERIES SAW AN OVERALL INCREASE IN ATTENDANCE AS THE SYMPHONY ROLLED OUT A MORE FLEXIBLE "PICK SIX" SUBSCRIPTION PACKAGE WHICH ALLOWED PATRONS TO CURATE THEIR OWN SERIES BASED ON PERSONAL TASTES AND SCHEDULES. MASTERWORKS PROGRAMMING, LED BY MUSIC DIRECTOR KEN LAM, FEATURED AUDIENCE FAVORITES SUCH AS BEETHOVEN'S FIFTH SYMPHONY AND RACHMANINOFF'S SECOND PIANO CONCERTO AS WELL AS MORE EXPLORATORY WORKS THAT INCLUDED A WORLD PREMIERE OF YIORGOS VASSILANDONAKIS'S OBOE CONCERTO AND MICHAEL DAUGHERTY'S EXOTIC TIMPANI CONCERTO, RAISE THE ROOF. BOTH CONCERTI WERE PERFORMED BY CHARLESTON SYMPHONY PRINCIPAL MUSICIANS WHICH SHOWCASED THE IMMENSE TALENT THAT THE CHARLESTON SYMPHONY HAS AMONGST ITS TWENTY-FOUR CORE MUSICIANS. UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF YUIRY BEKKER, THE POPS SERIES CONTINUED TO ENTERTAIN AUDIENCES AND ENGAGE THE CHARLESTON COMMUNITY. WITH GENRE BENDING PERFORMANCE SUCH AS A TRIBUTE TO LOUIS AND ELLA AND AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 MINUTES, BEKKER WORKED TO TIE IN COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS TO MAKE THE POPS SERIES ACCESSIBLE TO THE BROADEST POSSIBLE AUDIENCE AND SERVE IN MANY CASES AS AN INTRODUCTION TO THE CHARLESTON SYMPHONY. THIS PAST SEASON, BEKKER INVITED CHARLESTON RESIDENT AND LATIN PERCUSSIONIST, GINO CASTILLO, CHARLESTON TAIKO DRUMMERS, AND MANY OTHERS TO SHARE THE STAGE WITH THE SYMPHONY. |

OVER 70 YOUNG MUSICIANS RANGING FROM IN AGES 13-18 FROM 24 SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE LOWCOUNTRY RECIEVED HIGH-QUALITY MUSICAL INSTRUCTION AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR MENTORSHIP WITH THE MUSICIANS OF THE SYMPHONY THROUGH THE CSYO PROGRAM. IN ADDITION, 2,200 STUDENTS FROM 23 SCHOOLS ATTENDED OUR YOUNG PEOPLES CONCERT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CARNEGIE HALL'S LINK UP PROGRAM. THE CSO MUSICIANS GAVE 112 PERFORMANCES AT 73 SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE TRI-COUNTY AREA REACHING OVER 15,000 STUDENTS, OF WHICH 45% OF SCHOOLS WERE TITLE I. CSO MUSICIANS VISITED THE ALLEGRO CHARTER SCHOOL OF MUSIC REGULARLY TO WORK ON INSTRUMENTAL TECHNIQUE AND ENSEMBLE PLAYING WITH A GROUP OF 40 PERCUSSION STUDENTS. THE SYMPHONY ALSO HELD A 5-DAY INTENSIVE CONDUCTING WORKSHOP FOR YOUNG CONDUCTORS FROM ACROSS THE WORLD TO WORK WITH CSO AND LEARN FROM RENOWN FACULTY AND CSO MUSIC DIRECTOR, KEN LAM. WHEN THE SYMPHONY MUSICIANS ARE NOT ON THE STAGE, THEY ARE PERFORMING THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY, INCLUDING STORYTIME CONCERTS AT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY, SALTWATER SOUNDS AT THE SC AQUARIUM, AND MORE. THE SYMPHONY ALSO LAUNCHED A "COMMUNITY MESSIAH" IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MT. ZION AME CHURCH IN WHICH THE MUSICIANS OF THE CHARLESTON SYMPHONY, LED BY KEN LAM, PERFORMED SELECTIONS FROM HANDEL'S FAMOUS ORATORIO WITH MEMBERS OF THE CHOIR AND SOLOISTS FROM THE MT. ZION AME COMMUNITY. THE PERFORMANCE CONCLUDED WITH THE CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA PERFORMING INSPIRING GOSPEL MUSIC AND A STANDING OVATION. THE CSO HAS ESTABLISHED AND IS PROUD TO NURTURE A COLLABORATIVE WORKING ENVIRONMENT AMONGST THE BOARD, STAFF, MUSICIANS, AFFILIATE ORGANIZATIONS, AND THE CHARLESTON COMMUNITY. |
