Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

Us gaap requires management to evaluate income tax positions taken by the organization and to recognize an income tax liability (or asset) if the organization has taken an uncertain tax position that more likely than not would not be substantiated upon examination by the internal revenue service ("irs"). The organization has identified its income tax status as a tax-exempt entity as its only significant income tax position; however, the organization has determined that such income tax position does not result in an uncertainty requiring recognition in the financial statements. The organization is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0THE CSO CONTINUED ITS COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION IN TRI-COUNTY SCHOOLS BY PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING FOR OVER 90 SCHOOLS IN CHARLESTON, DORCHESTER, AND BERKELEY COUNTIES, REACHING OVER 21,000 STUDENTS. THE CSO INVESTED $365,000 AND ABOUT ONE THIRD OF THE CORE MUSICIANS' TIME TO EDUCATIONAL AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS.THE CSO CONTINUED ITS STRONG PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CHARLESTON SYMPHONY YOUTH ORCHESTRA PROVIDING STUDENT MUSICIANS WITH SECTIONAL COACHINGS AND SIDE-BY-SIDE EVENTS WITH CSO MUSICIANS AND MUSIC DIRECTOR, KEN LAM. OUR TWO CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES FOR FAMILIES, SALTWATER SOUNDS AT THE SC AQUARIUM AND STORY TIME AT THE MAIN BRANCH OF THE CHARLESTON COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY, PRESENT FREE, CHILD-FRIENDLY CONCERTS TO FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN. BOTH OF THESE SPECIAL EVENTS TEACH CHILDREN ABOUT THE INSTRUMENTS OF THE ORCHESTRA AND OFFER HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE AT THE INSTRUMENT PETTING ZOO, WHICH IS SPONSORED BY CSO AFFILIATE ORGANIZATION, THE CHARLESTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA LEAGUE. OVER 1,500 CHILDREN AND PARENTS ATTENDED PERFORMANCES THIS SEASON.THE CSO OFFERED TWO DISTINCT AGE-CURATED YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONCERTS, ONE FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES K-5 AND A MORE MATURE PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 6-12. IN OCTOBER, 3,000 STUDENTS IN GRADES 6-12 ATTENDED BEETHOVEN TO BERNSTEIN, WHICH INCLUDED STANDARD SYMPHONIC MUSIC ALONG WITH BRAND NEW COMPOSITIONS. THIS PROGRAM ALLOWED STUDENTS TO EXPLORE MUSIC WITH CONNECTIONS TO CLASSIC LITERATURE, HISTORICAL EVENTS, SCIENCE, AND OTHER SUBJECTS.IN MARCH, 3,154 STUDENTS IN GRADES K-5 ATTENDED THE ORCHESTRA MOVES; AN INTERACTIVE CONCERT IN WHICH STUDENTS PARTICIPATED BY SINGING, DANCING, AND PLAYING THE RECORDER ALONG WITH THE CSO. THIS "LINK UP" CONCERT WAS PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CARNEGIE HALL AND INCLUDED A TWO-HOUR PROFESSIONAL LEARNING WORKSHOP FOR EDUCATORS. AS PART OF OUR MUSICIANS IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM, CSO MUSICIANS PERFORMED AT PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS AT NO COST TO PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS. THESE ENGAGING PROGRAMS ARE MORE THAN JUST CONCERTS; STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT THE INSTRUMENTS AND HAVE TIME TO ASK QUESTIONS. THIS SEASON, THE CSO GAVE 154 PERFORMANCES AT 90 SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE LOWCOUNTRY, OF WHICH 42 PERCENT WERE TITLE I SCHOOLS.THE CSO'S "COMPOSITION AND CRITIQUE" PROGRAM LEAD STUDENTS TO DISCOVER PARALLELS BETWEEN THE LITERARY ARTS AND MUSIC COMPOSITION. STUDENT COMPOSERS FROM THE COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON ASSISTED PARTICIPANTS WITH COMPOSING MUSIC TO REPRESENT A FICTIONAL STORY. THE NEW WORKS FROM THIS PROGRAM WERE THEN PREMIERED AT THE YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONCERT. THE CSO ALSO PROVIDED NEW DISTRICT-ACCREDITED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR TRI-COUNTY K-12 EDUCATORS. LED BY CSO MUSIC DIRECTOR KEN LAM AND/OR CSO DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION MITSUKO FLYNN, THESE WORKSHOPS FOCUSED ON COLLABORATION IN MUSIC, ARTS INTEGRATION, STRING TECHNIQUES, CONDUCTING, AND THE YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONCERTS CURRICULA. 0 UNIQUE INTERACTIONS.
