Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

Us gaap requires management to evaluate income tax positions taken by the organization and to recognize an income tax liability (or asset) if the organization has taken an uncertain tax position that more likely than not would not be substantiated upon examination by the internal revenue service ("irs"). The organization has identified its income tax status as a tax-exempt entity as its only significant income tax position; however, the organization has determined that such income tax position does not result in an uncertainty requiring recognition in the financial statements. The organization is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction.

IRS990/Desc0IN THE 2017-2018 SEASON, THE CHARLESTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CELEBRATED THE 100TH BIRTHDAY OF LEGENDARY CONDUCTOR AND COMPOSER, LEONARD BERNSTEIN, WITH BOTH A POPS AND MASTERWORKS CONCERT DEDICATED TO HIS MOST FAMOUS REPERTOIRE. FOR OUR MASTERWORKS SERIES, PIANIST CONRAD TAO PERFORMED BERNSTEIN'S AGE OF ANXIETY AS WELL AS GERSHWIN'S PIANO CONCERTO IN F TO A ROUSING OVATION. MR. TAO IS AN UP-AND-COMING STAR IN THE CLASSICAL MUSIC FIELD, AND THE CSO WAS DELIGHTED TO HAVE HIM AS A GUEST ONLY SIX MONTHS PRIOR TO THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC'S WORLD PREMIERE OF HIS ORIGINAL COMPOSITION, EVERYTHING MUST GO. THE CSO ALSO DELIGHTED PATRONS WITH BEETHOVEN'S ICONIC NINTH SYMPHONY TO A PACKED HALL IN NOVEMBER, AS WELL AS BEETHOVEN'S SEVENTH SYMPHONY IN APRIL. ACCOMPANYING BEETHOVEN'S SEVENTH WAS A RARE TREAT: CONCERTMASTER YURIY BEKKER PERFORMED MAX BRUCH'S BELOVED VIOLIN CONCERTO ON A 17TH CENTURY STRADIVARIUS VIOLIN. FINALLY, MUSIC DIRECTOR KEN LAM AND CSO MUSICIANS CONTINUED THEIR PURSUIT TO STRETCH OUR AUDIENCE'S UNDERSTANDING OF CLASSICAL MUSIC BY PRESENTING A NEWER WORK BY ALFRED SCHNITTKE, WHICH RECEIVED A STANDING OVATION. FOR OUR POPS SERIES, THE CSO CELEBRATED THE LEGACY OF BERNSTEIN BY FEATURING SELECTIONS FROM WEST SIDE STORY, CANDIDE, AND MORE. THE CSO ALSO CELEBRATED THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF LEGENDARY MOVIE COMPOSER JOHN WILLIAMS, WITH A PERFORMANCE COMPRISED OF HIS MOST FAMOUS FILM SCORES OVER THE YEARS. THE CSO CONTINUED TO REACH OUT INTO THE COMMUNITY WITH PERFORMANCES OF HANDEL'S MESSIAH AT CHURCHES IN CHARLESTON, SUMMERVILLE, AND MOUNT PLEASANT. THE CSO WAS A GOOD STEWARD OF ITS RESOURCE, FINISHING ITS 8TH CONSECUTIVE SEASON WITH A MODEST OPERATING SURPLUS AND INVESTING MORE THAN 84% OF EXPENSES INTO PROGRAM RELATED ACTIVITIES. THE CSO HAS ESTABLISHED AND IS PROUD TO NURTURE A COLLABORATIVE WORKING ENVIRONMENT AMONGST THE BOARD, STAFF, MUSICIANS, AFFILIATE ORGANIZATIONS, AND THE CHARLESTON COMMUNITY.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0THE ORCHESTRA OFFERS FOUR CORE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS THAT FOCUS ON INSPIRING, CHALLENGING, AND EDUCATING STUDENTS THROUGH MUSICAL EXPERIENCES; CHARLESTON SYMPHONY YOUTH ORCHESTRA (CSYO), YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONCERTS (YPC), MUSICIANS IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM, AND A PILOT RESIDENCY PROGRAM AT THE ALLEGRO CHARTER SCHOOL OF MUSIC. THIS YEAR, THE CHARLESTON SYMPHONY ACQUIRED THE CSYO TO BECOME ONE OF OUR MAIN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. THIS ABSORPTION HAS ALLOWED THE YOUTH ORCHESTRA ACCESS TO THE CHARLESTON SYMPHONY'S EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES. OVER SEVENTY STUDENT MUSICIANS RANGING IN AGES 13-18 FROM 23 SCHOOLS PARTICIPATED IN CSYO THIS YEAR. CSYO MUSICIANS RECEIVED THE HIGHEST QUALITY PERFORMING ARTS EDUCATION AND OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK CLOSELY WITH THE MUSICIANS OF THE CHARLESTON SYMPHONY.THE CHARLESTON SYMPHONY ALSO OFFERED TWO DISTINCT YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONCERTS CURATED FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES K-5 AND A MORE MATURE PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 6-12. IN JANUARY, 1,500 STUDENTS IN GRADES 6-12 ATTENDED AN ALL-BEETHOVEN PROGRAM, WHICH SHOWCASED HOW BEETHOVEN'S HEARING LOSS INFLUENCED HIS COMPOSITIONS, AND WHAT HE MIGHT HAVE HEARD AT EACH STAGE OF HEARING LOSS. IN MARCH, 2,750 STUDENTS IN GRADES K-5 ATTENDED THE ORCHESTRA ROCKS, AN INTERACTIVE AND ENGAGING CONCERT IN WHICH STUDENTS PARTICIPATED BY SINGING, DANCING, AND PLAYING THE RECORDER ALONG WITH THE CSO. THIS CONCERT WAS PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CARNEGIE HALL'S "LINK UP" PROGRAM. THE CHARLESTON SYMPHONY AND THE ALLEGRO CHARTER SCHOOL OF MUSIC COLLABORATED IN OUR FIRST RESIDENCY PROGRAM. CHARLESTON SYMPHONY PERCUSSIONISTS REGULARLY VISITED TO COACH THE ALLEGRO PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE. THE ALLEGRO STUDENTS WERE FEATURED IN THE MARCH YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONCERT, THE ORCHESTRA ROCKS, AND HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM FOR THOUSANDS OF YOUNG STUDENTS. AS PART OF OUR MUSICIANS IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM, CSO MUSICIANS PERFORMED AT 76 PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS AT NO COST TO PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS, 50% OF THE SCHOOLS VISITED ARE TITLE I. THESE ENGAGING PROGRAMS ARE MORE THAN JUST CONCERTS; STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT THE INSTRUMENTS AND HAVE TIME TO ASK QUESTIONS. THIS PROGRAM ALSO ELIMINATES THE BARRIER OF TRANSPORTATION AND COST, AND THROUGH THIS INITIATIVE, WE REACHED OVER 21,000 STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE LOWCOUNTRY THIS YEAR. WHEN THE ORCHESTRA IS NOT ON STAGE, YOU CAN FIND OUR MUSICIANS ENGAGING AND PERFORMING THROUGHOUT OUR COMMUNITY INCLUDING STORYTIME CONCERTS AT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY, SALTWATER SOUNDS AT THE SC AQUARIUM, AND MUCH MORE. THE CHARLESTON SYMPHONY IS COMMITTED TO THE EDUCATION COMPONENT OF OUR MISSION AND THIS YEAR, WE INVESTED $317,00 TOWARDS OUR INITIATIVES
