The school foundation promotes educational excellence in florence 1 schools through grants for innovative learning and through high impact initiatives designed to prepare all students for success.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The mini-grants are as follows:e3 science: e-books enhancing education in science (north vista elementary school) the students will have access to non-fiction science e-books in school and at home. These books will enhance their science knowledge and their reading comprehension. They will be able to use the books as a study text and take ar tests on many of the titles. The students will use the following e-book features: highlighing, note taking, dictionary features, and text ot speech. Students will have simultaneous access to all of the e-books for whole group lessons on their interactive whiteboards.oh, the places we will go!(mclaurin elementary school) for preschoolers, on the playground, build a roadway out of edging pavers, painting a center line to make it look authentic. It will contain two tunnels, and two parking pads for the storage of vehicles, buildings, trees, road signs and cardinal direction signs. Through these hardscape manipulatives develop language skills by discussions with questions like: where are you going? When will you arrive? What will you see? What kind of car are you driving? These should help the student develop his own understanding of community, encourage the practice of social skills and communication, explore problem solving and math and develop and use map skills.science in fast forward (lucy t davis elementary school) provide time-lapsed cameras to document plant growth, metamorphosis and the construction of a bird's nest as well as other animal habitats. These time-lapsed videos can be used for future years as well as current years. What can i read next? Improving reading through familiarity (dewey l carter) this grant seeks to encourage students, especially those whose reading ability may be less than average, to read chapter books that are found in various series and/or written by familiar authors. Studies have shown that reading books that are similar in nature, such as those found in series, increases readers' comfort level when reading. This is due to their consistent writing styles, vocabulary, and characters. This familiarity often leads to an improved rate of reading success which makes reading a more pleasurable experience. As readers become "hooked" on one or more series or authors, the increased reading practice they gain will hopefully lead to improved academic success as well as create life-long, avid readers.mentor texts provide guidance for our readers and writers (moore intermediate school) students will be exposed to effective writing strategies using grade appropriate mentor texts for both fiction and nonfiction writing. Students will be able to identify the organizational patterns of the text so that they can understand the main points and begin to organize thier own ideas in a similar manner.kindling a desire to read (west florence high school) purchase a set of basic kindles for the hsap english language arts remedial students. The teacher or media sepcialist will conduct book talks for the books from the sc young adult book award nominees. Small groups of students will select books from the nominees. These books will be distributed to students. In each group, students will assume a variety of roles such as discussion director, connector and vocabulary enricher.time for non-fiction (dewey l carter) purchase the weekly magazine "time for kids" for fourth grade students. This magazine teaches current events, non-fiction reading, and location of information within a piece to develop increased interest in non-fiction literature as well as a desire to learn more about the world around them.the best singer in the district (dome students) working with district one's muscially exceptional (dome) students by training and encouraging these students by developing their interpretation of songs as well as an understanding of what is good music to perform.podcasting with ipods in the classroom (royall elementary school) students will create and use podcasts to share information, revi
Activity 3
Business summit educational program is produced by the school foundation staff which promotes and produces the school readiness program. This includes the reproduction costs of manuals and materials as well as direct costs associated with this program for state-wide business leaders. The school readiness program's purpose is to get students ready for kindergarten because it has been determined that if students are ready for kindergarten they require less remediation and are more likely to be on grade level when they reach grade levels.
