The board of directors of the dan river basin association reviewed the final draft of 2022 990 at a special board meeting in april 2023. Form 990 was prepared by rouse, rouse, rouse & gardner, cpa firm in conjunction with drba staff and input from board members. The document was distributed to the board members prior to the board meeting in april. Board members were asked to forward questions to shawn gorman, treasurer. Board members approved the 990 prior to submission.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 12C

The organization distributed a copy of the conflict of interest policy by email with a request that each board member discloses actual or potential conflicts of interest and sign and return a copy of the policy to the executive director. This distribution and request were made by email in february 2022. This request was repeated to remind board members that had not returned their signed policies later in february 2022. All board members have signed the conflict of interest policy. This information was assimilated into the 990 form as related party transactions and potential conflicts of interest have been disclosed in this filing.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15A

Environmental education (ee) drbas ee programs reached more than 8,000 youth and almost 500 adults in 2022, almost doubling the number reached in 2021. Requests for drbas ee virtual programs also increased substantially. The stem project which focused on providing multiple ee programs for 600 students over a 2-year period successfully concluded in pittsylvania county, va. Drba provided both spring and fall ee programs for more than 100 underserved youth through mhc after 3 in martinsville, va. Three epic river experience events reached more than 100 high-school aged youth in danville. This program provided training in paddling, river safety, river ecology and water quality monitoring. More than 95% of the teens had never been on a river prior to the event and after the experience, reported they would like to do more outdoors and spend less time in front of a screen. Drba also provided more than a dozen of its award-winning in-classroom and field programs such as trout in the classroom, day in the woods, streamside trees in the classroom and growing kids & trees. In addition, drba sponsored and participated in over twenty public events and workshops during the year including virginia save our streams training, rain barrel workshop, and six citizen water quality monitoring trainings for more than 150 volunteers.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Outdoor recreation in 2022, drba worked to start or complete 22 park, trail or river access projects, 13 in virginia and 9 in north carolina. Drbas public, free first saturday outings had 283 attendees, compared to 155 in 2021, from 33 localities compared to 21 last year. Completed outdoor asset projects included the future site of the virginia mayo river state park and nature detour trail. Enhancements were made to the dick & willie trail, lauren mountain preserve trail, doe run river access, frith drive river access, paw park, j. Frank wilson park, riverside family area (s. Martinsville river access), and the philpott dam river access in virginia. In north carolina, belews park, settles bridge renovation project, clearwater park and the jacobs creek batteau landing park and river access were completed and opened to the public. Enhancements were made to several assets including safety signage project at the leaksville landing, island ford and klyce street river accesses and new signage at the nc wildlife dan river gamelands river access. Drba continued it's work on designing the rockingham county, nc outdoor master plan in partnership with six rockingham county, nc municipalities. Also in nc, nc state parks designated drba as the lead agency to develop a master plan for the dan river state trail. This paddle trail was designated a state trail by nc legislators in 2021 and extends from stokes county, nc to caswell county, nc. In virginia, drba continued to implement the outdoor recreational projects outlined in the 2019 henry county and martinsville outdoor recreation master plan.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

Stewardship & outreach in 2022, twelve miles of river and streams were cleaned and monitored by drba volunteers and six miles of trail were cleaned of litter and debris ultimately removing more than 100 tons of garbage from the environment. More than 300 trees were planted along waterways as riparian buffer. Drba's 3rd monarch waystation in the region was planned and completed construction in danville, va. Drbas inspire clean water project engaged hundreds of students from city of martinsville and henry county, va who submitted artwork that would be featured on storm drains in their community. The contest inspired classroom work related to storm drains and clean waterways. One student from elementary, middle and high school were chosen by the mhc rotary club to paint their winning design on a storm drain in martinsville, va and were featured in the local newspaper stirring conversation about the importance of storm drain management and anti- litter. Drba also partnered with southern environmental law center to maintain the ban on uranium mining in virginia. Drba staff continued to serve on several committees and boards of organizations, including the board of the virginia association for environmental education (vaee), virginia resource use education council (vruec), virginia no child left inside (vncli) coalition, mayo river state park stakeholders, virginia water resources research center, piedmont outdoor recreation, and eden rivers and trails. Drba staff were also virtual guest lecturers and speakers for more than two dozen organizations, such as middle border forward vision 2035, master gardeners in virginia and north carolina, kiwanis, rotary, and other local clubs and committees. In addition, drba received grant funding to hire three consultants to assist with enhancing and increasing its outreach through social media. The consultants work resulted in a substantial increase in drbas ability to raise awareness for its mission and programming content and to build new relationships throughout the region.
