“Education & stewardship in 2019, drba's environmental education (ee) programs reached more than 7,000 students, almost double the number of students in 2018. Ee programming included trout in the classroom (tic), streamside trees in the classroom (stic), stem programming and special projects and presentations for classrooms in 12 counties in region. Drba managed 21 classrooms for the tic program and coordinated 14 schools for the stic program. Drba continued to partner with franklin county public schools to continue the first floating classroom and with albert harris elementary school for the first green schoolyard project in virginia. In addition, drba offered spring and fall ee programs for 250 disadvantaged and underserved youth in partnership with mhc after 3. Drba trained and supported volunteers in its citizen water quality monitoring program which now covers 50 monitoring sites on the dan, smith, and mayo rivers. In 2019, drba held 3 rain barrel workshops attended by 44 participants. Drba staff presented at the virginia military institute stem conference in partnership with martinsville city public schools for the third year and participated in the second annual danville steam night for danville city public schools. Working with danville city public schools, drba helped develop an environmental literacy model focused on student water quality monitoring. In addition, drba staff worked with 5 virginia organizations to launch a new collaborative, quarterly southern environmental education catalog that will be mailed to all schools in virginia. Drba staff also presented with philpott lake us army corps of engineers for a ranger leadership course at kerr lake reservoir. Drba more than doubled the number of volunteers participating in cleanups to 486, from 200 in 2018, who donated 1500+ hours of volunteer time to clean approximately 170 miles of river and trails and remove 66,384 pounds of trash and 437 tires in 2019. Drba also completed work with keylog economics to develop a ecosystem services plan for the region and partnered with henry county psa, cha consulting and the usace at philpott to survey the upper smith river and tributaries to identify potential contamination sources or degraded areas of concern. In 2019, drba continued to offer its water protector certification, storm drain marking, river watch, cleanup crew and the riparian buffer programs to inspire stewardship in the region. Drba also continued to invest resources in educating the public about the issues related to hydraulic fracturing, uranium mining, coal ash waste, pipeline development, forestry best practices and the damage caused by littering.”
“Recreation drba continued to offer its 18th year of first saturday outings (fso), which are monthly hikes and/or paddles that are free, open to the public, and for people of all ages and abilities. In 2019, the fsos attracted a total of 159 individuals from 21 localities, a 30% increase over 2018. Drba also partnered with the greater bassett area organization to provide several saturday fun floats in bassett, virginia. Drba's outdoor recreation asset projects included securing funding to manage the construction 70 asset projects martinsville/henry county outdoor recreation master plan in the next 5 years, pre-work for the lake reidsville trail, providing maintenance and renovation planning for the settles bridge river access, and opening the high rock ford trail and river access, a new mile to mayodan bike trail and the smith river blueway water trail to the public. Drba began implementation planning for the jacobs creek batteau landing and continued planning for the madison whitewater park. In 2019, drba received donated property for the clearwater park in eden, nc. Drba also continued work with henry county on the next phase of the small towns collaborative, piedmont land conservancy to brand piedmont legacy trails, and with moss street partnership schools to develop cross country and mountain biking trail on the school campus.”
“Sustainable economy, heritage and operations drba's municipal memberships included the town of halifax, city of martinsville, henry county, town of ridgeway, town of mayodan, town of madison, city of eden, rockingham county, town of stoneville, wentworth, and the town of danbury in 2019. Drba continued co-hosting the annual smith riverfest in henry county, virginia to attract more outdoor recreational visitors to the region. Drba also continued to be fiscal agent for the dan river implementation team which developed dan river st8 crossings to promote tourism to the region. Drba staff has remained constant in 2019. Drba staff continued to serve on several committees and boards of organizations including the board of the virginia association for environmental education (vaee), vruec (virginia resource use education council), vncli (virginia no child left inside) coalition, board of friends of mayo river state park, virginia water resources research center, piedmont outdoor recreation, west rock rivers & trails group, greensboro fat tire society and eden rivers and trails. Drba staff were also guest lecturers and speakers for the virginia museum of natural history, middle border forward vision 2035, master gardeners in virginia and north carolina, kiwanis, rotary, several regional chambers of commerce and other local clubs and committees.”

DRBA'S OUTDOOR RECREATION ASSET PROJECTS INCLUDED SECURING FUNDING TO MANAGE THE CONSTRUCTION 70 ASSET PROJECTS MARTINSVILLE/HENRY COUNTY OUTDOOR RECREATION MASTER PLAN IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS, PRE-WORK FOR THE LAKE REIDSVILLE TRAIL, PROVIDING MAINTENANCE AND RENOVATION PLANNING FOR THE SETTLES BRIDGE RIVER ACCESS, AND OPENING THE HIGH ROCK FORD TRAIL AND RIVER ACCESS, A NEW MILE TO MAYODAN BIKE TRAIL AND THE SMITH RIVER BLUEWAY WATER TRAIL TO THE PUBLIC. DRBA BEGAN IMPLEMENTATION PLANNING FOR THE JACOBS CREEK BATTEAU LANDING AND CONTINUED PLANNING FOR THE MADISON WHITEWATER PARK. IN 2019, DRBA RECEIVED DONATED PROPERTY FOR THE CLEARWATER PARK IN EDEN, NC. DRBA ALSO CONTINUED WORK WITH HENRY COUNTY ON THE NEXT PHASE OF THE SMALL TOWNS COLLABORATIVE, PIEDMONT LAND CONSERVANCY TO BRAND PIEDMONT LEGACY TRAILS, AND WITH MOSS STREET PARTNERSHIP SCHOOLS TO DEVELOP CROSS COUNTRY AND MOUNTAIN BIKING TRAIL ON THE SCHOOL CAMPUS. |
