Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Action Institute NC is a community organization and citizen action group that educates, organizes, and mobilizes residents of low-wealth communities to represent their own interests on issues of social and economic concern. Through grassroots outreach and base-building, training and leadership development, and strategic campaign planning and execution, residents work together to determine their priorities and make action plans to win concrete improvements. Our issues include but are not limited to public education, health care access, financial justice, employment and wages, affordable housing and tenant rights, immigrant rights, voting rights, and local investment and development. Through house meetings, community meetings and forums, participation in public hearings, and direct action, residents take their concerns directly to public officials and private sector decision-makers and wage campaigns for specific reforms and a greater voice in decisions that affect them.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Education: We train parents to be more involved in their childrens schools and to advocate more effectively on their behalf; work to increase overall investment in public education through higher per-pupil expenditures, teacher pay and more support staff and services, and to keep public money from going to privatization efforts through vouchers and under-regulated charter expansion; and to reduce racial and other disparities in suspension and expulsion policies; and to increase student mental health services.$67,130-
Employee Rights: We have campaigned for "Ban the Box" ordinances to remove questions about prior felony convictions from city employee and vendor applications. We are also working to raise the federal minimum wage, and have supported organizing work to raise wages in the fast food industry.$38,057-
Immigrant Rights: We have organized for Comprehensive Immigration Reform, against unjust deportations and family separations, for an end to local law enforcement involvement in 287g immigration enforcement programs and Secure Communities programs with ICE, for expanded opportunities for undocumented parents to volunteer in their childrens schools, in support of driving privileges for undocumented immigrants not tied to anti-immigrant measures and in-state higher education. We also conducted numerous trainings with the immigrant community to help them know their rights and how to organize and advocate for them.$36,514-
Voting Rights & Engagement: We spend considerable time and energy promoting non-partisan electoral participation and voter protection among traditionally disenfranchised and under-represented constituencies. We have worked on our own and with other groups on redistricting and in opposition to racial gerrymandering, which are active in North Carolinas State Voices table, and have mobilized against voter suppression laws targeted at young persons, seniors, and voters of color.$25,697-
Health Care: We support quality, affordable health care for all. To ensure that federal health care reform is implemented as intended, we have conducted public trainings on the benefits of the new law, created and distributed materials on these benefits at public events and forums, and worked with other health care advocacy groups in the state to block attempts to repeal the new law or to defund it. We are also working with partners to expand Medicaid and reduce cuts to the state Medicaid budget. We have also led a coalition to oppose cutting Medicare benefits, raising the retirement age, or changing cost-of-living-adjustment formulas that would result in reduced benefits.$24,038-
Tenant Rights and Affordable Housing: We have organized in a number of apartment complexes and mobile home parks. Our victories have included fines for and repair of unsafe and unsanitary conditions that violate housing codes; an end to illegal collection of water and utility bills and overcharging on rent, along with rebates for wrongful charges; prevention of disparate, abusive treatment of immigrant tenants; and change in management in complexes with longstanding problems. We work closely with city officials to increase oversight and code enforcement, and to expand decent, affordable housing in blighted communities.$15,382-
Neighborhood Quality of Life: We have fought for and won a number of neighborhood infrastructure, city service, crime and safety, and zoning improvements, and we participate in the annual city budget process to encourage investment in undeveloped, low-wealth communities. We are currently campaigning in Durham to reduce blight by streamlining the process for getting abandoned housing to non-profit developers, and working with advocates in Charlotte to promote mixed-use, affordable housing development along transit corridors and in scattered-site housing.$12,409-
Financial Justice: We have organized homeowners facing foreclosure and helped save families home. In addition, we have campaigned for principal reduction and the use of eminent domain as a way to help the millions of homeowners whose mortgage debt still exceeds the value of their home. We continue to work to ensure that mortgage settlements benefit those harmed by the foreclosure crisis; to see that banks and bank officers be held accountable for their misconduct; and that laws ensure adequate oversight of the financial services industry and to deter future misconduct be strengthened.$10,922-
Tax & Budget Reform: We have worked with the Together NC coalition to oppose drastic cuts to the social safety net, education, community health care and other programs and services vital to low-wealth communities. We have also promoted modernization of the state revenue system and a more progressive tax code to avoid future fluctuations in tax revenues that our antiquated system in North Carolina fails to guard against. Lastly, to make adequate public investments in infrastructure and economic opportunity and development possible in future state budgets.$10,402-
