Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Action Institute NC is a community organization and citizen action group that educates, organizes, and mobilizes residents of low-wealth communities to represent their own interests on issues of social and economic concern. Through grassroots outreach and base-building, training and leadership development, and strategic campaign planning and execution, residents work together to determine their priorities and make action plans to win concrete improvements. Our issues include but are not limited to public education, health care access, financial justice, employment and wages, affordable housing and tenant rights, immigrant rights, voting rights, and local investment and development. Through house meetings, community meetings and forums, participation in public hearings, and direct action, residents take their concerns directly to public officials and private sector decision-makers and wage campaigns for specific reforms and a greater voice in decisions that affect them.

We promote racial, gender and economic equity through grassroots education, organizing, mobilization, leadership development, and increased voter participation.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0SOCIAL SAFETY NET:OUR MOST PROMINENT SAFETY NET ORGANIZING IN 2019 CONTINUED TO BE IN SUPPORT OF MEDICAID EXPANSION, AND THERE WAS A GLIMMER OF HOPE THAT THE 2018 ELECTION RESULTS MIGHT MAKE EXPANSION POSSIBLE SINCE IT'S POPULAR WITH NORTH CAROLINA'S VOTERS AND HAS SO MANY BENEFITS THAT HAVE CAUSED OTHER STATES TO ADOPT IT EVEN IF THEIR LEGISLATURES OR GOVERNORS WERE INITIALLY OPPOSED TO IT. WE ORGANIZED A NUMBER OF EVENTS ON OUR OWN AND IN CONCERT WITH ALLIES IN SUPPORT, WHICH BENEFITTED THE EXPANSION OF OUR RAGE AND GENDER EQUITY AND SENIOR CITIZEN ORGANIZING WORK EVEN IF THE POLICY WIN REMAINED ASPIRATIONAL. WE ALSO INVESTED SIGNIFICANT ORGANIZING RESOURCES IN WORK ON FEDERAL HEALTHCARE ACCESS ISSUES, INCLUDING PROTECTION OF THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT AGAINST ONGOING ADMINISTRATIVE AND LEGAL ACTIONS TO UNDERMINE OR ELIMINATE IT, AND ALSO TO REDUCE PRESCRIPTION DRUG PRICES THROUGH FEDERAL REGULATORY REFORM OF THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY'S MONOPOLISTIC PRACTICES. SOME OF THE 2019 WORK FOCUSED ON THE CONTINUED NEED TO RAISE MORE REVENUE AT THE STATE AND FEDERAL LEVEL FOR PUBLIC HEALTH AND OTHER HEALTHCARE AND SAFETY PROGRAMS THROUGH MORE PROGRESSIVE TAXATION POLICIES.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0CIVIL RIGHTS:WE WORKED IN 2019 FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM AND POLICE ACCOUNTABILITY, IMMIGRANT RIGHTS, AND RACIAL AND GENDER EQUITY. WE WORKED WITH THE MECKLENBURG COUNTY SHERIFF TO FULFILL THE CAMPAIGN PROMISES HE HAD MADE IN THE 2018 ELECTION TO ELIMINATE THE COUNTY'S 287G AGREEMENT WITH ICE, INCLUDING NOT HONORING ICE DETAINERS, ALONG WITH HIS STATED INTENTIONS TO END JUVENILE SOLITARY CONFINEMENT AND REINSTATE IN-PERSON FAMILY JAIL VISITS. WE ALSO WON A COMMITMENT FROM THE CITY OF CHARLOTTE FOR A FIVE-FOLD INCREASE OF ITS INVESTMENT IN COMMUNITY-BASED VIOLENCE REDUCTION PROGRAMS, AND WE BUILT A COALITION WITH SEVERAL PARTNER GROUPS ON GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION.WE ALSO SECURED SEED FUNDING FOR AN IMMIGRANT DEPORTATION DEFENSE PROJECT WE HAVE PUSHED FOR TWO YEARS NOW, AND HAVE RECRUITED LEGAL AND SERVICE PROVIDER PARTNERS TO LAUNCH THE PROGRAM IN MECKLENBURG COUNTY IN 2020. IN ADDITION, WE CONTINUED WORK TO DEFEND THE "OUR RACE AND GENDER EQUITY INITIATIVE" (RAGE), ORGANIZED ANOTHER BLACK WOMEN'S LOBBY DAY AT THE STATE LEGISLATURE, AND PARTICIPATED IN SEVERAL OTHER LEGISLATIVE MOBILIZATIONS, ALONG WITH NUMEROUS OTHER EVENTS AND TRAININGS ON HEALTHCARE ACCESS WITH A PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON BLACK MATERNAL HEALTH, ALONG WITH OTHER SAFETY NET, VOTING RIGHTS AND EDUCATION ISSUES, AND WE EXPANDED THE RAGE ORGANIZING PROGRAM IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY AND FAYETTEVILLE.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0ECONOMIC JUSTICE:WHILE MUCH OF OUR WORK ON ECONOMIC JUSTICE ISSUES LIKE LIVING WAGES, PAID SICK AND FAMILY LEAVE, INCREASING UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE BENEFITS AND REINSTATING NORTH CAROLINA'S EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT REMAINS STYMIED BY THE CONSERVATIVE STRANGLEHOLD ON THE STATE LEGISLATURE, AND OUR VERY RESTRICTIVE PRE-EMPTION LAWS, WE KEPT THESE ISSUES IN PUBLIC WITH A SERIES OF EDUCATIONAL AND ADVOCACY EVENTS WE ORGANIZED WITH THE LIVING WAGES COALITION WE HELPED CONVENE, AND THE CREATION OF A MECKLENBURG COUNTY COALITION IN SUPPORT OF THESE SAME POLICY REFORMS. WE DID HAVE GREAT SUCCESSES IN 2019 ON OUR TENANT RIGHTS AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING WORK IN MECKLENBURG COUNTY, WINNING INCREASED CITIZEN REPRESENTATION ON THE ADVISORY BOARD RESPONSIBLE FOR RECOMMENDING HOW AFFORDABLE HOUSING TRUST FUNDS SHOULD BE SPENT, AND PREVENTING MASS EVICTIONS IN TWO LARGE APARTMENT COMPLEXES, AND RESETTLEMENT ASSISTANCE AND MONIES FOR THOSE EVENTUALLY DISPLACED. IN THE WAKE OF THESE HIGH-PUBLICIZED PUBLIC BATTLES, THE CITY OF CHARLOTTE COMMITTED MORE OF ITS HOUSING TRUST FUND DOLLARS TO HELPING DISPLACED TENANTS RECEIVE SERVICES AND CASH SUPPORTS BEFORE BEING EVICTED. WE ALSO CONTINUED TO WORK ON STRENGTHENING SUPPORT OR FOR TENANTS FACING EVICTION BY CREATING A TENANT HOTLINE AS PART OF THE WORK OF OUR TENANT ORGANIZING AND RESOURCE CENTER (TORC).
