To make Bible translation and language development possible, especially in the most remote and difficult places on earth. We do that by enabling locally-appropriate and sustainable solutions in transportation, technology, media, and training.
The Vision of JAARS is that people's lives and communities are transformed as they experience God's Word in their own language. Our mission is to make Bible translation and language development possible, especially in the most remote and difficult places on earth.

“Page 2, Pt III, Line 4b (continued) and four-wheel drive vehicles. Water Transportation--JAARS helps its international partners assess their travel challenges, advises on the best boats for their unique situations, and acquires and/or outfits maritime vessels for both partner and JAARS program use. If partners need a large vessel, JAARS helps them plan, launch, and/or run the program. JAARS can also teach partner staff how to swim, use safety gear, and give first aid.”
“Page 2, Pt III, Line 4d Other Program Services: Information Technology -- JAARS works with SIL International and scores of other global partners to determine what IT, local power generation and internet connectivity solutions are most needed by on-the-ground language development and translation teams; and then plans, funds, and/or facilitates locally appropriate and sustainable solutions to their IT and connectivity challenges. JAARS also provides office space and support services to about 40 SIL IT staff at its headquarters.”
“Page 2, Pt III, Line 4d Other Program Services: Training -- JAARS works with scores of global partners to provide both on-campus and overseas training in multiple areas, including but not limited to: intercultural communications; aviation, land and maritime vehicle operations/maintenance/safety; and more. JAARS' partners depend upon our standards in aviation and intercultural training, both to assess incoming staff and to help ensure the safe and effective sustainability of field operations.”
“Form 990 was prepared by staff, reviewed by an independent, retired CPA and by the organization's top management, then forwarded to the Board of Directors for review prior to filing.”
“All Board of Directors and Officers must annually sign a conflict of interest statement to ensure compliance with the organization's conflict of interest policy. The Board Secretary reviews the signed conflict of interest statements and ensures this is accomplished annually at the May Board meeting.”
“The organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements available to the public upon request. The financial statements and Form 990 are available on the organization's website.”
“Pt VI, Line 17 List of states requiring a copy of Form 990 California, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, Wisconsin, West Virginia”
“INVENTORIES - Effective this year the following note applies: JAARS standard aviation parts and materials are slow moving inventories, therefore JAARS classifies 85% of the assets as noncurrent and 15% as current for the year ended September 30, 2017. The previous year has not been restated in this report.”
“See Schedule O 220459. 213971. 0.”
“JAARS established the Mexico Museum and the Museum of the Alphabet (museums) on its campus. The collections of the museums at JAARS, which were acquired through purchases and contributions since the organization's inception, are not recognized as assets on the statements of financial position and, thus, are not reflected on the financial statements. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired or as temporarily or permanently restricted net assets if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Proceeds for disposals or insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in the appropriate net asset classes.”
“There are two museums located at the JAARS center.”
“The Museum of the Alphabet, a project initiated by Dr. W. Cameron Townsend, was inaugurated in 1990 and traces the history of writing from its beginning to the present. A metal sculpture of Mezrop Mastots of Armenia, a Sefer Torah scroll, a clay sculpture of Sequoia and many other artifacts from around the world add to the 75 colorful hand-painted displays. People groups that were reached by SIL's pioneer alphabet makers, with JAARS' help, are artistically portrayed in illustrations of their unique word spellings (including tone marks), their ways of adapting literacy into their culture, and their transformed lives. A computer display shows the kinds of software tools that modern alphabet makers can use today.”
“The Mexico-Cardenas Museum was established in 1977 by SIL to show appreciation to the people of Mexico and to honor the memory of their former president, Lazaro Cardenas, with whom JAARS founder, Cameron Townsend, had established diplomatic relations and a life-long friendship. First-time primers, dictionaries, and grammars are on display with completed New Testament translations - a result of the years of hard work, dedication, and faith of many trained linguists. Pictures and videos in the museum tell the stories of Scriptures-in-use. Special speakers, live music, and food attract crowds on JAARS Days, when visitors can ask questions about Bible translating and hear some inspiring stories. Missionaries visiting JAARS for training will be inspired by the exhibits in this museum. The Mexico-Cardenas Museum currently has a display of 31 recently translated scriptures from several countries. Future plans include interactive displays showing particular ways that JAARS serves the Bible translation effort.”
“The museums educate visitors in the history of translating the Bible into many languages that people speak in their homes and villages. We hope these visitors will catch the vision for how important this mission is to bring peace to people's hearts and lives. People who have visited these museums have become missionaries, volunteers, and contributors to JAARS' mission.”
“Pt IX - Other Assets - Inventories: Non-current (See Schedule O, Pt X note)”
“Pt IX - Other Assets - Specialized aircraft parts JAARS classifies a specific portion of the aviation parts and materials with noncurrent assets. These items are maintained for future use as replacement parts because there are limited supply sources for such parts.”

| IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartVIGrp/ExplanationTxt | 0 | The amount shown in column vi represents the fair rental value of office space on the JAARS campus that was used by SIL personnel and for which no rent was paid to JAARS. |
| IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartVIGrp/ExplanationTxt | 1 | From its inception, JAARS has supported Summer Institute of Linguistics, Inc. (d/b/a SIL International) by providing services that enabled SIL personnel to travel to the remote locations they serve and have the use of the most appropriate equipment to accomplish their tasks. SIL is named in JAARS' governing documents as a supported organization. Wycliffe Bible Translators International, Inc. (d/b/a the Wycliffe Global Alliance) is a related organization (of both JAARS and SIL) made up of numerous organizations around the world that are also engaged in Bible translation, language development, Scripture engagement, literacy, and related initiatives. JAARS also supports these Wycliffe organizations with the same or similar services it provides to SIL. These relationships have existed for many years and are continuing. Wycliffe Global Alliance is not named as a supported organization in JAARS' governing documents. |
| IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartVIGrp/ExplanationTxt | 2 | JAARS supports the language development and Bible translation efforts of SIL International, the organizations of the Wycliffe Global Alliance, and other partners. JAARS provides transportation services, media services, technology services, and training services that enable these organizations to accomplish their goals. AVIATION: JAARS helps its international partners start and operate flight programs by recruiting and training staff, setting standards, acquiring and equipping aircraft, conducting on-site flight program R&D, and more. Air transportation of personnel and equipment saves days of land or water travel in many of the areas where our partners work. Currently we help aviation programs in Austrlia, Brazil, Cameroon, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Peru, and Tanzania. LAND TRANSPORTATION: JAARS helps its international partners assess their travel challenges, determine the optimal vehicles for their situations, and acquire and/or outfit vehicles. We also develop and conduct training, both overseas and at our headquarters in North Carolina, for partners who need to operate and maintain motorcycles and four-wheel drive vehicles in rugged conditions. WATER TRANSPORTATION: JAARS helps its international partners assess maritime travel challenges, determine the optimal watercraft for their situations, and acquire and/or outfit vessels. JAARS' involvement is to provide safe, sustainable travel for our partners' personnel. If a large vessel is needed, we support the planning, launch, and ongoing operations of the program. We also develop and conduct water safety training for partner staff. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: JAARS helps its international partners, through services of SIL International and others, to assess IT and Internet connectivity challenges, develop effective solutions, and support funding and effective implementation of plans and technology. The use of technology enables local linguists and Bible translators in remote locations to utilize the latest software tools for translation, literacy, and Scripture engagement; to collaborate with each other; and to have access to consultants and experts while in remote locations. MEDIA: JAARS helps its international partners, through services of SIL International and others, to assess needs for non-print media and then supports the planning, production, and delivery of the Bible in audio and video formats particularly suited to specific language groups. We also provide office space and support services to about 40 SIL media staff at our North Carolina headquarters. MINISTRY OPERATIONS: At its headquarters in North Carolina JAARS has facilities where: * Over 600 people work to support Bible translation, Scripture engagement, and language development, including IT and media teams from our main partner, SIL International * Pilots, technical staff, and other missionaries train before and during their ministry service * Aircraft, boats, and other equipment are prepared for international partners * Missionaries and their families rest and retool before returning to their assignments * Materials and supplies are purchased for international partners and shipped to them. JAARS provides the above logistics support to SIL International, affiliates of the Wycliffe Global Alliance, and other related organizations who focus on Bible translation, Scripture engagement, and language development. |
| IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartVIGrp/ExplanationTxt | 3 | The services that JAARS provides to SIL International and its partners are integral to accomplishing their purpose. Without the aviation solutions provided by JAARS, SIL and its partners would have to develop their own resources to transport their staff and local peope to and from the remote villages where they work, as well as provide the safety standards and training currently provided by JAARS. Without JAARS, SIL and its partners would have to develop expertise and solutions in land and water transportation, technology, and media, and train people to use them. Without JAARS, SIL would have to provide offices and support structures for approximately 80 technology and media staff who are currently working on the JAARS campus. These services are necessary for SIL and its partners to accomplish their exempt purposes. |
