Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Other

Pt III, Line 4a, Program Service Accomplishments: (cont'd) Water Transportation -- JAARS helps its partners assess their travel challenges, advises on the best boats for their unique situations, and acquires and/or outfits maritime vessels for both partner and JAARS program use. If partners need a large vessel, JAARS helps them plan, launch, and/or run the program. JAARS can also teach partner staff how to swim, use safety gear, and give first aid.

Other

Pt III, Line 4d Other Program Services: Information Technology -- JAARS works with SIL International and scores of other global partners to determine what IT, local power generation and internet connectivity solutions are most needed by on-the-ground language development and translation teams; and then plans, funds, and/or facilitates locally appropriate and sustainable solutions to their IT and connectivity challenges. JAARS also provides office space and support services to about 40 SIL IT staff at its headquarters.

Other

Pt III, Line 4d Other Program Services: Training -- JAARS works with scores of global partners to provide both on-campus and overseas training in multiple areas, including but not limited to: intercultural communications; aviation, land and maritime vehicle operations/maintenance/safety; and more. JAARS' partners depend upon our standards in aviation and intercultural training, both to assess incoming staff and to help ensure the safe and effective sustainability of field operations.

Pt VI, Line 11B

Form 990 was prepared by staff, reviewed by an independent, retired CPA and by the organization's top management, then forwarded to the Board of Directors for review prior to filing.

Pt VI, Line 12C

All Board of Directors and Officers must annually sign a conflict of interest statement to ensure compliance with the organization's conflict of interest policy. The Board Secretary reviews the signed conflict of interest statements and ensures this is accomplished annually at the May Board meeting.

Pt VI, Line 19

The organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements available to the public upon request. The financial statements and Form 990 are available on the organization's website.

Financial Statement Notes

Pt III, Line 1A

JAARS established the Mexico Museum and the Museum of the Alphabet (museums) on its campus. The collections of the museums at JAARS, which were acquired through purchases and contributions since the organization's inception, are not recognized as assets on the statements of financial position and, thus, are not reflected on the financial statements. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired or as temporarily or permanently restricted net assets if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Proceeds for deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in the appropriate net asset classes.

Pt III, Line 4

Two museums are located on the JAARS campus; the Mexico-Cardenas Museum and the Museum of the Alphabet. - - - The Mexico-Cardenas Museum was established in 1977 by SIL International to show appreciation to the people of Mexico and their president, Lazaro Cardenas (1934-1940). Besides the historical photographs, books in many languages, outstanding folk art and embroidered traditional costumes in the museum, there is a 1938 Chevrolet, a gift from the president, given out of the president's desire to help pioneer linguist W. Cameron Townsend, founder of Wycliffe Bible Translators, SIL and JAARS. The president welcomed the young Americans, whom Townsend was recruiting, and he endorsed the work of creating alphabets and providing translated Scriptures in the Mayan, Aztecan and other indigenous languages. - - - - - - - - - The Museum of the Alphabet, a project initiated by Dr. W. Cameron Townsend, took three years of research by Dr. Richard Pittman, followed by thirteen years of arduous work by artist and translator Kathryn Voigtlander and scores of volunteers. The museum traces the history of writing from it's beginning to the present. A metal sculpture of Mezrop Mastots of Armenia, a Sefer Torah scroll, a clay sculpture of Sequoia and many other artifacts from around the world add to the 75 colorful hand-painted displays. A computer display shows how useful this technology has been for modern linguists and Bible translators. - - - - - - The museums educate visitors in the history of translating the Bible into many languages that people speak in their homes and villages. We hope these visitors will catch the vision for how important this mission is to bring peace to people's hearts and lives. People who have visited these museums have become missionaries, volunteers, and contributors to JAARS' mission.

Pt X, Line 2

The financial statement effects of a tax position taken or expected to be taken are recognized in the financial statements when it is more likely than not, based on the technical merits, that the position will be sustained upon examination. Interest and penalties, if any, are included in expenses in the statements of activities. As of September 30, 2015, JAARS had no uncertain tax positions that qualify for recognition or disclosure in the financial statements.

Pt XI, Line 4B

Gain (loss) on Disposal of Fixed Assets. In fiscal 2016 there was a net loss on the disposal of retired fixed assets.
