Mission

The maymont foundation is committed to creating experiences that delight, educate and inspire.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Estate grounds and gardens: the estate grounds and gardens were open year-round to 129,149 guests with 30,040 guests touring maymont mansion. The gardens, arboretum, maymont mansion, and other estate buildings are accessed through original entry gates that serve as one of three public entry points. The intact gilded age estate encompasses 100 acres of grounds and gardens including outdoor sculptures, landscape features and pathways, original italian and japanese gardens, and arboretum with one national and eight state champion trees. These and contemporary flower, vegetable and ornamental gardens, and natural wet lands areas are utilized for education programs, workshops, lectures, and garden tours by the horticulture staff. Maymont's estate lawns host large annual events like the jazz festival, on stage at maymont performing arts series, family easter, herbs galore, and old fashion christmas.
Activity 3
Children's farm and wildlife habitats: the children's farm site is open year-round serving 201,601 guests who utilized this primary park entry in fy13. The zoological staff is responsible for over 500 species of animals, fish and reptilians in the nature center, children's farm and outdoor wildlife habitats including black bears, bison, bobcat, deer, foxes, and raptors including american bald eagles. Due to the success of otter training presentation in the nature center outdoor animal training presentations were added with the bobcat and black bears allowing for guest interaction (6,047 guests). The children's farm includes barns with display stalls and interpretive signage, pastures, family vegetable garden, butterfly gardens, an education classroom, and is home to domestic farm animals including rare breeds. The children's farm site and education classroom is used for programs, camps and other events. There were over 100 unique events that served 6,935 participants in fy13. It is a popular spot for children's birthday parties (96 parties, 3,360 guests) that include a hayride and animal contacts. It is a prime spot for corporate picnics (1,875 users) and special events like animal appreciation day (700)and bumble bee jamboree (1,000), as well as, an outdoor performance area and family picnic location. For instance, sparc performed two modified shows of "charlotte's web" on the children's farm lawn as part of our free on-stage at maymont performance series.

VOLUNTEERS COMPLETED TASKS SUCH AS PROVIDING SUPPORT DURING SPECIAL EVENTS, PAINTING RAILINGS, GIVING TOURS, HELPING WITH THE ANIMALS, EDUCATING THE PUBLIC, AND MAINTAINING THE GARDENS AT MAYMONT. WE AGAIN PARTNERED WITH SEVERAL EAGLE SCOUTS TO COMPLETE CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE AND VISITOR COUNTING WAS AN ONGOING ACTIVITY SUPPORTED BY DOZENS OF VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF.AFTER ADOPTING THE MAYMONT INTERPRETIVE MASTER PLAN IN JANUARY 2012 WE STARTED PILOTING WAYS TO BETTER INTEGRATE EDUCATION PROGRAMMING ACROSS DEPARTMENTS. OPEN YEAR-ROUND FOR PUBLIC TOURS AND PROGRAMS SERVING 83,766 GUESTS AND STUDENTS DURING FY13. MAYMONT SCHOOL PROGRAMS ARE DEVELOPED TO SUPPORT VIRGINIA STANDARDS OF LEARNING (SOL) FOR SCIENCE AND SOCIAL SCIENCE AND ARE TAUGHT BY EDUCATORS IN FOUR ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING AND EDUCATION CLASSROOMS. MAYMONT'S EDUCATION TEAM PROVIDES OVER 1,000 HOURS OF INSTRUCTION TO 17,000 STUDENTS FROM 35 SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS VIRGINIA. THESE ACCESSIBLE, LOW-COST EDUCATION PROGRAMS ARE IMPORTANT TO EDUCATORS AUGMENTING THEIR STUDENTS' LEARNING THROUGH HANDS-ON, INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCES. 25,313 ADDITIONAL GUESTS WERE SERVED THROUGH FORMAL GROUP AND PUBLIC TOURS, OUTREACH PROGRAMS AND FAIRS, AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS, SCOUTS AND CAMPS. EDUCATORS AND AQUARISTS REGULARLY INTERACT WITH GUESTS IN THE GALLERIES AND EXHIBITS THROUGH SNAKE AND SNAPPING TURTLE PRESENTATIONS, FISH FEEDINGS AND POPULAR ANIMAL TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR THE OTTERS ALLOWING PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES TO ENCOUNTER NATURE NOSE-TO SNOUT. THE EDUCATION CLASSROOMS OPEN INTO ONE LARGER SPACE USED FOR PUBLIC PROGRAMS AND LECTURES, MEETINGS, VOLUNTEER EVENTS AND FACILITY RENTALS.
