Neighborhood Resources: Partner with our community to provide resources and referrals to prevent homelessness and promote rapid re-housing efforts, prevent and manage hunger or financial crisis, provide foreclosure counseling and mitigation, support learning, job training and placement, facilitate social, cultural, recreational and educational activities for adults and youth, and support family stability and normalcy at walk-in and neighborhood-based resource centers.Program Accomplishments in FY11RI has utilized several key types of direct assistance funding to support program activities in its shelter and transitional housing, which include prevention and diversion, and rapid re-housing efforts. The Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program supported prevention and diversion efforts for county and state residents who have been adversely affected by the economic conditions. RI received a direct award of $424,000 from the state of Virginia combined with 2.4 million Fairfax County received directly from the federal government (of which $144,286 was awarded to RI) for a total of 2.8 million dollars county-wide ($568,286 total awarded to RI) which was disbursed from October 1, 2009 through September 30, 2011. RI served 337 households with financial assistance for prevention and diversion, rapid re-housing or community case management services. Fairfax County's partnership as a whole has served 420 households which include 1,107 people with these services. The funding also provided a total of 2,574 families county-wide with assistance with rent, utilities, employment, child care, food, medical and transportation needs. During the past year, 1,160 families received emergency support in the form of emergency food and toiletries; 130 families received assessments and brief case management; 225 families participated in life skills classes and workshops on topics related to financial literacy, health and nutrition, family relationships and language/communication; and 1,176 received assessments, information and referrals and services which might have included financial assistance with rent and utilities, referrals to gently used clothing, and access to seasonal drives for back-packs, school supplies and holiday food and gifts. RI has not seen a reduction in the demand for emergency services.Foreclosure CounselingOur goal over the past year was to provide counseling to at least 80 unduplicated households, with 25% staying in their home.At the halfway point in our grant, we have provided foreclosure prevention counseling to 120 households. Twenty-three of these (19%) have been able to remain in their homes.

Activity 3

Affordable Housing: Affordable housing preservation, development and management projects in our community and advocacy for policies that preserve and develop affordable housing.Program Accomplishments in FY11: Provided extensive counseling and case management to help clients find and remain in stable and affordable housing. Provide affordable housing for 47 households in scattered site, affordable housing available to low- and moderate-income families in the Reston-Herndon area. Focus on rapid re-housing, addressing the need for permanent housing from the outset, on the premise that families and individuals find dignity at home, and then are more responsive to social services when they are settled into their own long-term home.
