For over five decades, cornerstones has addressed challenges that threaten the well-being and prosperity of families and our region. Cornerstones offers innovative and impactful programs that touched the lives of nearly 26,000 individuals and families in fiscal year 2024, and convened partners to advance opportunities for stable housing, food security and resources that provide opportunities for every family.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The exempt organization's (eo's) finance committee reviews the financial statements and draft tax return in advance of filing. Management will answer all questions and provide supporting documentation as requested. The board of directors will receive a copy of the draft tax return prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Board of directors and employees are required to abide by the agency's conflict of interest policy. Board members refrain from voting where there is a perceived or actual conflict of interest. Board members are required to report conflicts of interest when issues are before the board. Ceo reviews the conflict statements regularly.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

On a consistent basis, the chairperson of the board appoints a task force or members of the board to facilitate the ceo performance review. If performance or market conditions warrant a change in compensation, the chairperson or designee works with human resources to gather information to guide the decision. Information used includes market-based compensation survey data for the region and, when available, information from nonprofits of comparable size and complexity. Upon completion of the evaluation, the chairperson or designee presents a report on performance and compensation to the board of directors. The meeting may be held in executive session. If approved by a simple majority of the board members present, the board chair completes a personnel action form which is the formal record of the action. The executive committee will oversee a comparison of compensation awarded and reported on the agency's 990 form on an annual basis.

Financial Statement Notes

PART IV, LINE 1B:

The organization was a trustee on accounts held on behalf of our clients at united bank. Each trust account has its own ein. The trusts are set up primarily for our clients to build assets and savings to enter into a lease, purchase a home or pursue other activities that advance family self-sufficiency

PART V, LINE 4:

The eo manages endowment funds. One fund is controlled by the board of directors and intended to use for mission investments. The other provides tuition scholarships for families unable to afford full tuition at laurel learning center or other childcare/child development programs.

PART X, LINE 2:

Cs and chs are exempt from federal and state income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code, except to the extent of any unrelated business income. Rihc is a limited partnership which passes its net earnings or losses to its partners. Rihc's rental income activity to low-income individuals is considered to be directly related to the organization's exempt purpose; therefore, this income is exempt from unrelated business income tax. Therefore, no provision for income taxes has been provided for in the financial statements. The organization has determined that it does not have any material unrecognized tax benefits or obligations as of june 30, 2024. Cs and chc file form 990, return of organization exempt from income tax, annually with the united states department of the treasury. Rihc files form 1065, return of partnership income. Such returns are subject to examination by taxing authorities, generally for a period of three years from the date the returns are filed.

OVER 1,100 UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS AND HOUSEHOLDS WERE SERVED THROUGH OUR HOMELESS SERVICE PROGRAMS. ERCS CASE MANAGERS HELPED 52 SINGLE GUESTS MOVE INTO PERMANENT HOUSING.
