Mission

NTI's mission is to transform global security by driving systemic solutions to nuclear and biological threats imperiling humanity.

NTI is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working to protect our lives and livelihoods, our environment and quality of life for this and future generations from the growing risks of catastrophic attacks from nuclear, biological, radiological, and chemical weapons, as well as devastating cyber attacks. We design and implement innovative projects with partners around the world to directly reduce threats, show governments the way on threat reduction, and build momentum and support for action on a larger scale.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2

NTI's Corporate Secretary is the son-in-law of one of NTI's Co-Chairs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

- NTI's Form 990 is prepared by its Finance Department. It is reviewed by NTI's Chief Financial Officer, President, NTI's external auditors, BDO, and by NTI's external legal counsel, Davis Pickren Seydel and Sneed. The Form 990 is submitted to NTI's Audit Committee, which reviews the form on behalf of the entire Board. The entire Board is briefed on the contents of the form and the date of the filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

- NTI's bylaws require that a copy of NTI's Conflict of Interest Policy, as adopted by the Board, be furnished to each Board member, officer, and staff member. NTI prohibits officers and staff from participating or engaging in any activity for which a conflict of interest exists. Officers and staff also give consideration to perceived conflicts of interest. Board members are recused from decisions of the Board in which a conflict of interest might arise. Board members, officers, and staff are required to disclose to NTI any related party and any reportable affiliates that may apply for, or otherwise be considered by NTI, for a grant or other financial transaction.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

NTI's Board of Directors has a compensation committee that annually reviews the compensation of, and makes recommendations for, the compensation of the CEO, President, and all NTI Officers. The recommendations are presented to the full Board of Directors for a vote. The compensation committee is comprised of three independent Board members, and per NTI's bylaws, may not include current Board members to whom NTI pays a salary, or Board members to whom NTI formerly paid a salary. NTI periodically engages a consultant to perform a compensation study and to benchmark NTI's compensation levels. The results of the compensation study are used to inform compensation.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2

NTI started a new program called International Fuel Cycle Strategies. This program works to identify, incentivize and implement international nuclear fuel cycle approaches that reinforce key nonproliferation and nuclear security principles and are backstopped with appropriately designed and resourced international safeguards and monitoring measures. The Fuel Cycle program also seeks to strengthen international verification approaches through support of existing verification structures, while also developing new and enhanced international safeguards and monitoring concepts.

IRS990/Desc0Global Nuclear Policy Program (GNPP). In 2018, GNPP continued to work with governments, partner organizations, and influential voices around the world to develop, sustain, and build support for effective policies to reduce reliance on nuclear weapons and prevent their spread and their use anywhere in the world. GNPP engaged in public and non-public efforts to guide developments on Euro-Atlantic Security, negotiations with North Korea, and relations with Russia, including convening a number of global meetings of high-profile current and former officials, experts, and next-generation leaders. In 2018, NTI released the Nuclear Weapons in the New Cyber Age report, which focused on needed changes to U.S. nuclear policy and posture. NTI also released a report on Building a Safe, Secure, and Credible NATO Posture, which examined the risks, credibility, and cost of basing U.S. non-strategic nuclear weapons in Europe. To help educate the public about the terms and provisions of the Iran nuclear deal, NTI produced an interactive website and infographic. In the area of multilateral disarmament, NTI has supported preparations for the 2020 review cycle of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. NTI has also begun a multi-year dialogue with governments and experts in support of the 2020 review conference. NTI also continued to support a forum to promote relationship-building and networking among a young generation of leaders from Europe, the United States, and Russia.
