Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part I, Line 1, Description of Organization Mission:

Sitar Arts Center's mission is to offer possibilities that transform the lives of children and teens born into a world of unequal access to opportunity. We achieve the mission by engaging children and teens in the highest quality visual, performing and digital arts programming. We teach the arts so that our students learn about themselves and gain critical life skills. We create community for students and their families and we are an untiring voice on their behalf. Sitar bridges an opportunity gap in Washington, DC by providing an arts education that positively impacts youth from low-income households. Sitar's programs serve as an essential vehicle for developing the 21st century educational and workforce skills that pave the way for lasting achievement. Sitar's primary focus is reaching families that would not otherwise have these opportunities. Eighty percent of Sitar's students are from low-income households. Alongside its students and families, Sitar collaboratively builds an engaging and supportive community that brings together the District's families, teaching artists, and cultural partners. Sitar Arts Center provides a safe haven to more than 800 students a year, 80 percent of whom come from low-income households, teaching important life skills and fostering personal and artistic growth in D.C.'s youth

Form 990, Part III, Line 1, Description of Organization Mission:

Sitar Arts Center's mission is to offer possibilities that transform the lives of children and teens born into a world of unequal access to opportunity. We achieve the mission by engaging children and teens in the highest quality visual, performing and digital arts programming. We teach the arts so that our students learn about themselves and gain critical life skills. We create community for students and their families and we are an untiring voice on their behalf.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4B, Summer at Sitar: (continued)

Small Wonders (continued) As they follow their curiosities, explore and refine critical thinking, flexibility of thought and focus, they will find space to nurture their imagination, engage in collaborative work and propel innovation, with math and science woven into art, movement, and music. Students will participate in most camp trips and camp activities. Camp Sitar: Camp Sitar is for students in grades 1 8. Camp Sitar is broken into 3, 2-week sessions. Each session is based on a theme which is also connected to our summer musical. Students in grades 1 and 2 are in Kid Crafters and rotate between classes together each day as a group. Kids Crafters has four tracks with different art forms and classes that change each session. Young expressionists choose individual classes for each session. The classes are an hour and a half long, and the art forms and classes offered change each session. Summer Musical: For students who like to sing, dance, and act, Camp Sitar's summer musical provides the opportunity to put on an exciting, Broadway-style musical under professional direction and design. Students experience all aspects of mounting a full length musical from auditioning to rehearsal to final performance. Past productions have included Beauty and the Beast, Willy Wonka, Jr., You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, Hello, Dolly, Bye Bye Birdie, Guys and Dolls, and The Wiz, and Hairspray. Teen Arts Intensive: Teen Artists ages 12 and older will have the opportunity to enroll in two enriching sessions. Artists can register for one session or both. Students will choose 1 of 6 art intensive programs to immerse themselves in either session. The first session is 3 weeks and includes a collaborative project. The second session in 2 weeks and encourages collaboration, but focuses on intensive study. Students 12 and older, who register for Young Expressionists or Summer Musical, can register for Teen Arts Intensive for no additional cost.

Arts Afterschool engages elementary students through playacting classes and musical theater club, and teens through Actors Lab and playwriting in partnership with Young Playwrights Theater. During the summer, students ages 10-18 participate in a full scale, Broadway style musical that culminates in 5 performances for the community. The summer teen intern theater artists have lead roles in the musical, are assistant stage managers and run tech for the show.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc5Digital Arts and Writing: In order to succeed in learning and work in the 21st century, students need to be skilled in technology. Strong writing skills are essential in any era, and often under-developed at school. Sitar helps students to develop these skills with creativity, self-expression, and fun. The growing Arts Afterschool digital arts program offers classes in digital photography, music production, architecture, video game design, comic book design, t-shirt design, graphic design, and documentary film. Many of these classes incorporate creative writing because video games and comic books require a story arc and character development. Arts Afterschool also has essential writing classes outside of the digital arts lab such as poetic creations, short story writing, opera-libretto writing, memoir writing, and story book and illustration class. Camp Sitar provides many of the same digital and writing classes and also offers a 2-week digital arts intensive with game design in affiliation with George Mason University Game Design Institute. The summer teen intern digital and writing artists are assistant teachers in the classes for younger children.
