The museum's form 990 undergoes a number of internal and external reviews before it is filed with the irs. The return is prepared by the museum's public accounting firm, rubino & company, and is reviewed by the museum's finance team. The museum's 990 is posted on the board portal before it is filed with the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

Board members and employees upon hiring, receive a copy of the museum's code of conduct and sign off on it, indicating acceptance of the terms. Throughout the year, the museum is alert to and watches for conflict of interest issues throughout its business dealings. They would enforce the policy if it were to materialize. Board members complete and sign a specific conflict of interest disclosure form.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

The salary of the executive director is authorized by the chairman of the board. Substantiation of the salary of the executive director in place is provided via an aggregate salary line item budget to actual monthly report to the finance and executive commmittees. Annual increases, if any, are reviewed as part of the budget process and presented and voted upon by the finance and executive committee. A compensation committee, established in 2013, reviews and approves that salary. The museum uses the museum of art directors' salary guide for comparability as well as internal equity within the organization. Aggregate salaries are part of the financials presented to the board of trustees. The compensation committee approves the salary of the executive director. Other officer - chief operating officer. Salaries are provided via an aggregate salary line item budget to actual monthly report to the finance and executive committees. Annual increases, if any, are reveiwed as part of the budget process and presented and voted upon by the finance and executive committee.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

The organization makes its governing documents and conflict of interest policy available to the public on a case by case basis in response to requests, and financial statements are made available to the public upon request.

990, Part VI, Section A, Line 1

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part XI, Line 2C

The audit committee oversees both the audit and selection of the audit firm. The process has not changed from the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

Part III, Line 1A:

The museum's collections are made up of artifacts of historical significance and are objects that are held for educational and curatorial purposes. The items are catalogued, preserved, and maintained with activities performed regularly to verify their existence and assess their condition. The museum's collections which were acquired through purchases and contributions since the museum's inception, are not recognized as assets on the statements of financial position. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired or as decreases in temporarily restricted net assets if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Proceeds from disposals or insurance recoveries are expended for the purchase of collection artifacts and/or for collections which management expenses in the year received, and if unexpended, are reflected as increases in collections, board designated.

Part III, Line 4:

The Collections of the National Building Museum encompass many facets of the building arts and contain approximately 100,000 photographic images, 130,000 architectural prints and drawings, 100 linear feet of documents and 20,000 objects, including material samples, building fragments, and architectural toys. As a whole, the Collections supply a foundation of knowledge which is accessible to researchers, and may serve as a starting point for related exhibits, educational activities, and public programs dedicated to furthering understanding of relevant subjects, including materials and methods of construction, evolving architectural styles, and the role or function for building in society.

Part V, Line 4:

The intended use of the museum's aamot endowment is for operating expenses.

Part X, Line 2:

The museum is exempt from federal and district of columbia income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code, and is classified as publicly-supported under section 509(a)(1) of the internal revenue code, except as to income from unrelated business activities, if any. However, tax years ended september 30, 2014 through 2016 remain open to examination by the taxing jurisdiction to which the museum is subject, and they have not been extended beyond the applicable statute of limitations. The museum has processes in place to ensure the maintenance of its tax-exempt status; to identify and report unrelated income; to determine its filing and tax obligations in jurisdictions for which it has nexus; and to identify and evaluate other matters that may be considered tax positions. The museum has determined that there are no material uncertain tax positions that require recognition or disclosure in the financial statements.

Part XI, Line 2D - Other Adjustments:

Cost of goods sold 391,575. Fundraising event expenses 248,905.

Part XII, Line 4B - Other Adjustments:

TIMBER CITY: THIS EXHIBITION CHALLENGES THE NOTION THAT WOOD IS AN ANTIQUATED BUILDING MATERIAL. TIMBER CITY DEMONSTRATES THE MANY ADVANTAGES OFFERED BY CUTTING-EDGE METHODS OF TIMBER CONSTRUCTION, INCLUDING SURPRISING STRENGTH, FIRE RESISTANCE, SUSTAINABILITY, AND BEAUTY. THE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE OF LAWRENCE HALPRIN: LAWRENCE HALPRIN (1916-2009) WAS ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS OF THE 20TH CENTURY. OVER A CAREER SPANNING MORE THAN FIVE DECADES, HE DESIGNED SIGNIFICANT PROJECTS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES AND EVEN OVERSEAS. THE INNOVATIVE TECHNIQUES THAT HE PIONEERED CHANGED THE FIELD OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE FOREVER. MARKING THE CENTENNIAL OF HALPRIN'S BIRTH, THIS EXHIBITION CHARTED HIS CAREER FROM EARLY RESIDENTIAL COMMISSIONS IN SAN FRANCISCO TO MAJOR PROJECTS SUCH AS SEATTLE'S FREEWAY PARK, THE FIRST PARK BUILT OVER A FREEWAY.DISTRICT II: THIS POETIC VISUAL ESSAY EXPLORES THE CHANGING STREETSCAPE OF DOWNTOWN WASHINGTON IN THE 1960S, 1970S, AND 1980S THROUGH THE URBAN STREET PHOTOGRAPHY OF BILL BARRETT, CHRIS EARNSHAW, AND JOSEPH MILLS. THE TUBES VARIED IN SIZE FROM SEVERAL INCHES TO 10 FEET HIGH AND WERE INTERLOCKED TO CREATE THREE DYNAMIC INTERCONNECTED, DOMED CHAMBERS. REACHING 60 FEET TALL, THE INSTALLATION'S TALLEST DOME FEATURED AN OCULUS OVER 10 FEET IN DIAMETER. THE TUBES FEATURE A REFLECTIVE SILVER EXTERIOR AND VIVID MAGENTA INTERIOR, CREATED A SPECTACULAR VISUAL CONTRAST WITH THE MUSEUM'S HISTORIC NINETEE
