Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 1A

The founding and honorary trustees cannot vote. Composition of the executive committee is: chair, secretary, treasurer, executive director, chairs of standing committees, and committee chairs. The executive committee shall have the full authority, right, and power to act for the board, with the proviso that any such actions are reported to the board of trustees as soon as practically possible.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The museum's form 990 undergoes a number of internal and external reviews before it is filed with the irs. The return is reviewed by the museum's finance team and posted on the board portal before it is filed with the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Board members and employees, upon hiring, receive a copy of the museum's code of conduct and sign off on it, indicating acceptance of the terms. Throughout the year, the museum is alert and watches for potential conflict of interest issues throughout its business dealings. They would enforce the policy if one were to materialize. Board members complete and sign a specific conflict of interest disclosure form.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The salary of the executive director is authorized by the chairman of the board. Substantiation of the salary of the executive director in place is provided via an aggregate salary line item budget to actual monthly report to the finance and executive committees. Annual increases, if any, are reviewed as a part of the budget process and presented and voted upon by the finance and executive committee. A compensation committee, established in 2013, reviews and approves that salary. The museum uses the association of art museum director's salary survey for comparability as well as internal equity within the organization.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization makes its governing documents and conflict of interest policy available to the public on a case by case basis in response to requests, and financial statements are made available to the public upon request.

Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

The museum's collections are made up of artifacts of historical significance and are objects that are held for educational and curatorial purposes. The items are catalogued, preserved, and maintained with activities performed regularly to verify their existence and assess their condition. The museum's collections, which were acquired through purchases and contributions since the museum's inception, are not recognized as assets on the statements of financial position. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired or as decreases in temporarily restricted net assets if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Proceeds from disposals or insurance recoveries are expended for the purchase of collection artifacts and/or collections which management expenses in the year received, and if unexpended, are reflected as increases in collections, board designated.

PART III, LINE 4:

The collections of the national building museum encompass many facets of the building arts and contain approximately 300,000 photographic images, 250,000 architectural prints and drawings, 150 linear feet of documents and 20,000 objects, including material samples, building fragments and architectural toys. As a whole, the collections supply a foundation of knowledge which is accessible to reseachers, and may serve as a starting point for related exhibits, educational activities, and public programs dedicated to furthering understanding of relevent subjects, including materials and methods of construction, evolving architectural styles, and the role or function for building on society.

PART V, LINE 4:

To support programs of the national building museum.

PART X, LINE 2:

The museum has a process in place to ensure the maintenance of its exempt status, to identify and report unrelated business income, to determine its filings and tax obligations in jurisdictions for which it has nexus, and to identify and evaluate other matters that may be considered tax positions. The museum believes that there are no material uncertain tax positions that require recognition or disclosure in the financial statements.

PART XI, LINE 4B - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

PART XII, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

BY ACTIVATING THESE STORIES AND THEIR BUILT WORLDS, AND THE EARLY FOUNDATIONS FOR HOW WE BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND OUR SURROUNDINGS, BUILDING STORIES ALLOWS VISITORS TO INVESTIGATE THE ROLE THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT PLAYS IN OUR OWN LIVES AND COMMUNITIESAND HOW WE CAN BE AGENTS OF CHANGE FOR ITS MORE SUSTAINABLE, EQUITABLE FUTURE.FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT'S SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA PRESENTS BOTH REALIZED AND UNREALIZED PROJECTS FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT DESIGNED FOR THE REGION FROM THE 1930S THROUGH THE 1950S. THE EXHIBITION EXAMINES HOW HIS VISION OF THE FUTURE MIGHT HAVE IMPACTED URBAN, SUBURBAN, AND RURAL LANDSCAPES.CAPITAL BRUTALISM EXPLORES THE HISTORY, CURRENT STATE, AND FUTURE OF SEVEN POLARIZING BUILDINGS AND THE WMATA METRO SYSTEM IN WASHINGTON, D.C. THE EXHIBITION USES ARCHIVAL DOCUMENTS, DRAWINGS, CONSTRUCTION PHOTOGRAPHS, ARCHITECTURAL MODELS, AND CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHS TO PROVIDE CONTEXT AND SHED LIGHT ON THE BUILDINGS' STORIES. VISIBLE VAULT: OPEN COLLECTIONS STORAGE SHOWCASES A BROAD RANGE OF ARTIFACTS FROM THE MUSEUM'S PERMANENT COLLECTION, HIGHLIGHTING AMERICA'S ARCHITECTURAL AND DESIGN HERITAGE. THE EXHIBITION PROVIDES VISITORS WITH A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE WITH SIGNIFICANT HISTORICAL OBJECTS THAT WERE PREVIOUSLY UNAVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC DUE TO THEIR SIZE, SCOPE, AND MATERIAL.
