Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

The museum's collections are made up of artifacts of historical significance and are objects that are held for educational and curatorial purposes. The items are catalogued, preserved, and maintained with activities performed regularly to verify their existence and assess their condition. The museum's collections which were acquired through purchases and contributions since the museum's inception, are not recognized as assets on the statements of financial position. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired or as decreases in temporarily restricted net assets if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Proceeds from disposals or insurance recoveries are expended for the purchase of collection artifacts and/or for collections which management expenses in the year received, and if unexpended, are reflected as increases in collections, board designated.

PART III, LINE 4:

The collections of the national building museum encompass many facets of the building arts and contain approximately 75,000 photographic images, 100,000 architectural prints and drawings, 100 linear feet of documents and 10,000 objects, including material samples, building fragments, and architectural toys. As a whole, the collections supply a foundation of knowledge which is accessible to researchers, and may serve as a starting point for related exhibitions, educational activities, and public programs dedicated to further understanding of relevant subjects, including materials and methods of construction, evolving architectural styles, and the role or function for building in society.

PART V, LINE 4:

The intended use of the museum's aamot endowment is for operating expenses.

PART X, LINE 2:

The museum is exempt from federal and district of columbia income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code, and is classified as publicly-supported under section 509(a)(1) of the internal revenue code, except as to income from unrelated business activities, if any. However, tax years ended september 30, 2013 through 2015 remain open to examination by the taxing jurisdiction to which the museum is subject, and they have not been extended beyond the applicable statute of limitations.

PART XI, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Cost of goods sold 416,720. Fundraising event expenses 281,274.

PART XII, LINE 4B - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

HOUSE AND HOME IS A LONG-TERM EXHIBITION THAT TAKES VISITORS ON A TOUR OF HOUSES BOTH FAMILIAR AND SURPRISING, THROUGH PAST AND PRESENT, CHALLENGING OUR IDEAS ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS TO LIVE AT HOME IN AMERICA.PLAY WORK BUILD TAKES CHILDREN AND ADULTS ALIKE THROUGH AN EXPLORATION OF PLAY WITH AN IMMERSIVE, HANDS-ON INSTALLATION FEATURING MOLDED FOAM BLOCKS OF ALL SHAPES AND SIZES AND AN ORIGINAL VIRTUAL BLOCK PLAY EXPERIENCECOOL & COLLECTED: RECENT ACQUISITIONS: THIS EXHIBITION EXPLORES THE EXTRAORDINARY OBJECTS IN THE NATIONAL BUILDING MUSEUM'S COLLECTION. THESE PHYSICAL PIECES OF THE WORLD WE DESIGN AND BUILD - FROM THE TOOLS THAT HELP CREATE IT TO THE TOYS THAT HELP EXPLAIN IT - INSPIRE NEW PERSPECTIVES ON THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND HOW TO IMPROVE IT. SCALING WASHINGTON: PHOTOGRAPHER COLIN WINTERBOTTOM'S DEBUT MUSEUM EXHIBITION FEATURED STUNNING LARGE-SCALE IMAGES OF THE POST-EARTHQUAKE RESTORATION OF THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT AND WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL.SMALL STORIES: AT HOME IN A DOLLHOUSE: THIS EXHIBITION REVEALED THE FASCINATING TALES BEHIND SOME OF LONDON'S VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM OF CHILDHOOD'S BEST-LOVED DOLLHOUSES, TAKING YOU ON A JOURNEY THROUGH THE HISTORY OF THE HOME, EVERYDAY LIVES, AND CHANGING FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS. COMMEMORATING 9/11: PHOTOGRAPHS BY CAMILO JOSE VERGARA: THIS SERIES OF PHOTOGRAPHS WAS PRESENTED IN HONOR OF THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES, THOSE WHO RESPONDED AND VOLUNTEERED IN THE AFTERMATH, AND THOSE WHO HAVE LABORED TO NEVER FORGET - AND REBUILD - AFTER THE ATTACKS OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001.TAKEN BY CAMILO JOSE VERGARA OVER A SPAN OF MORE THAN 45 YEARS AND FOCUSED ON THE SITE OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER, THESE SEQUENCES CHRONICLE THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOWER MANHATTAN AND BROOKLYN. THEY ARE ALSO A TESTAMENT TO THE POWER OF PLACE, BUILDINGS, AND OUR COLLECTIVE MEMORY.LUMINOUS LANDSCAPES: PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALAN WARD: ALAN WARD, FASLA, OCCUPIES A UNIQUE POSITION IN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE. HE IS A RENOWNED PRACTITIONER OF THE CRAFT, DEMONSTRATED BY HIS AWARD-WINNING WORK AS A PRINCIPLE AT SASAKI; HE IS ALSO AN ACCOMPLISHED PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE LANDSCAPE. WORKING MOSTLY IN BLACK AND WHITE, WARD FOCUSES ON THE FUNDAMENTAL MATERIAL THAT CONSTRUCTS THE LANDSCAPE: GRAIN, TEXTURE, BRIGHT LIGHT, DAPPLED SHADE. BY DENYING US THE FAMILIAR GREEN LAWNS AND FOLIAGE, COLORED BLOOMS AND SURFACES, WARD'S LARGE FORMAT PHOTOGRAPHS CHALLENGE US TO SEE THE LANDSCAPE WITH NEW EYES.THE NEW AMERICAN GARDEN: THE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE OF OEHME, VAN SWEDEN: THIS EXHIBITION INCLUDED BOTH CONTEMPORARY AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS OF KEY PROJECTS DESIGNED BY OEHME, VAN SWEDEN & ASSOCIATES OVER THE PAST SEVERAL DECADES, ALONG WITH RELATED DRAWINGS AND ARTIFACTS FROM THE FIRM'S PRACTICE. A HIGHLIGHT OF THE EXHIBITION WAS THE PRESENTATION OF ORIGINAL PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURES BY PROMINENT ARTISTS - SUCH AS HENRY MOORE - THAT STRONGLY INFLUENCED OEHME AND VAN SWEDEN'S DESIGN WORK. GARDENS SPEAK: A TEMPORARY INSTALLATION BY LEBANESE-BORN, LONDON - BASED ARTIST TANIA EL KHOURY, THIS EXHIBITION GIVES VOICE TO SYRIANS WHO DIED BETWEEN 2011 AND 2013 IN THE SYRIAN CONFLICT, ALLOWING THEM TO SPEAK TO AUDIENCES FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE.ICEBERGS: DESIGNED BY JAMES CORNER FIELD OPERATIONS, THE INSTALLATION OPENED AS PART OF THE ANNUAL SUMMER BLOCK PARTY SERIES. ICEBERGS WAS BUILT FROM RE-USABLE CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS, INCLUDING SCAFFOLDING AND POLYCARBONATE PANELING. THE 20' HIGH "WATER LINE" ALLOWS PANORAMIC VIEWS FROM HIGH ABOVE THE OCEAN SURFACE AND DOWN BELOW AMONG THE TOWERING BERGS. THE TALLEST "BERGY BIT," AT 56', REACHES TO THE THIRD STORY BALCONY OF THE MUSEUM.INVESTIGATING WHERE WE LIVE: THIS EXHIBITION PROVIDES TEENS WITH THE OPPORTU
