Activity 2

Ghcc continues to serve as an americorps*vista intermediary, working with the corporation for national and community service (cncs) to place volunteers with non-profit and community groups. In fy2013, ghcc sponsored 10 vista projects impacting issues of public education, homelessness, workforce, and community improvement. In fy2013 ghcc-sponsored vistas recruited more than 900 community volunteers who donated almost 5000 hours of service. Vistas raised over $3.1 million in funding for their projects, including $67,400 of in-kind contributions.ghcc's relationship with cncs has been evaluated as so successful that it has been selected to serve as a "program grantee" for fy14. Through this expanded relationship, ghcc will be responsible for placing and overseeing a total of 25 vista projects, and will take on additional administrative responsibilities in support of the program.

Activity 3

Ghcc partners with five baltimore city public schools to leverage academic resources and physical improvements, partnerships and advocacy to improve schools. Using the community schools model of integrating academics, health and social services, youth extracurricular enrichment, and community engagement, ghcc helps improve student learning, strengthen families, and build stronger communities. Ghcc's community school coordinators at four city schools (barclay elementary/middle, guilford elementary/middle, margaret brent elementary/middle, and waverly elementary/middle) leverage and coordinate services, manage volunteers, and engage parents and neighborhood residents. The coordinators collaborate with over 100 partners to deliver services to these high-poverty schools including extracurricular activities, tutoring, mentoring, dental services and vision screenings. At dallas f. Nicholas sr. Elementary school, ghcc staff operate an after school mentoring program to support the social and academic achievement of students. Ghcc is also a leader in the baltimore education coalition (bec), which advocates for funding and policies to ensure an excellent education for baltimore's students.ghcc is committed to building and strengthening vibrant urban neighborhoods within north central baltimore to ensure that all of our fellow citizens are engaged, informed, and involved in the direction of their community. We help build leadership capacity and encourage sharing of best practices so that neighborhood residents can solve problems, build social connections and celebrate the strengths and uniqueness of their communities.
