Activity 2

In 2010 acdi/voca's food security programs empowered individual households and communities to increase their resiliency and build their capacity to participate in the global marketplace. We helped households move beyond governmental and foreign assistance, and strengthen coping mechanisms to protect their assets and livelihoods during times of shock. Through this protection, households can move from subsistence or low-value agriculture to business-oriented, intensified production. We worked to increase availability of food, enhance access to credit and mobilization of savings, improve use of food and better nutrition, and increase resiliency through natural resource management and early warning systems. Food security programs extended throughout africa, with programs operating in uganda, liberia, sierra leone, malawi, mali, and rwanda. A program was also initiated in bangladesh. In early 2010 we adapted our program in haiti to respond to the increased food insecurity and challenges created by the earthquake in january.

Activity 3

In 2010 acdi/voca's agribusiness programs linked farmers to markets through producer group activities to help them access financial and business services and improved inputs. We identified opportunities for both smallholder and commercial-scale agribusinesses to succeed and helped them develop strong business models. And we provided them with improved technologies and skills to increase yields, minimize losses and improve quality- all towards our goal of fostering greater competitiveness in local, regional and global markets. Acdi/voca started new agribusiness programs in kenya, moldova, bangladesh, lebanon, liberia, panama, mali and jamaica.
