Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Connecting generations helps at-risk youth become emotionally strong, resilient, and socially competent individuals who can succeed in school and life. Working exclusively through schools and other educational institutions, our mentoring and social emotional learning programs help children overcome adversity, develop resilience, and build a strong foundation of social emotional skills such as how to set goals, make responsible decisions, manage emotions, and build positive relationships with adults and peers. These skills are essential for students to engage fully in school and to become advocates for their own success. Our work directly supports public education and plays a critical role in helping break the cycle of adversity and poverty in delaware. Our vision is to create strong, sustainable communities through collaborative relationships that create positive, healthy environments in which youth and their families can thrive.

Connecting generations helps at-risk youth become emotionally strong, resilient, and socially competent individuals who can succeed in school and life.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. However, income from certain activities not directly related to the organization's tax-exempt purpose may be subject to taxation as unrelated business income. Generally accepted accounting principles prescribe rules for the recognition, measurement, classification, and disclosure in the financial statements of uncertain tax positions taken or expected to be taken in the organization's tax returns. Management has determined that the organization does not have any uncertain tax positions or associated unrecognized benefits that materially impact the financial statements or related disclosures. Since tax matters are subject to some degree of uncertainty, there can be no assurance that the organization's tax returns will not be challenged by the taxing authorities and that the organization will not be subject to additional tax, penalties, and interest as a result of such challenge.

IRS990/Desc0CREATIVE MENTORING IS OUR SCHOOL-BASED MENTORING PROGRAM. CREATIVE MENTORING SUPPORTS 97 MENTORING PROGRAMS IN SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY-BASED AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS IN DELAWARE IN ALL THREE COUNTIES. MENTORING OCCURS DURING SCHOOL HOURS, AND WITHIN DESIGNATED TIMES FOR COMMUNITY-BASED AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS. WE PROVIDE MENTOR RECRUITMENT, APPLICATION PROCESSING, CRIMINAL/CHILD ABUSE BACKGROUND AND REFERENCE CHECKS, MENTOR TRAINING, TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO ALL PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR, AND PROGRAM EVALUATION. WE DIRECTLY MANAGE MENTORING PROGRAMS AT FOUR SCHOOLS IN NEW CASTLE COUNTY. AT ALL OTHER SCHOOLS, THE MENTOR PROGRAM COORDINATOR IS A SCHOOL STAFF MEMBER OR COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER WHO IS TRAINED AND SUPPORTED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR BY CONNECTING GENERATIONS STAFF MEMBERS. ALL MENTORING PROGRAMS THAT WE SUPPORT MUST SIGN OUR PARTNER AGREEMENT, WHICH ENSURES THAT THE PROGRAM MEETS A RIGOROUS SET OF NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR QUALITY MENTORING ("ELEMENTS OF EFFECTIVE PRACTICE," 4TH ED., DEVELOPED BY THE NATIONAL MENTORING PARTNERSHIP). MORE THAN 20 YEARS OF RESEARCH AND EVIDENCE HAVE DEMONSTRATED THE POSITIVE EFFECTS OF MENTORING ON STUDENT SUCCESS WHEN PROGRAMS FOLLOW THE NATIONAL STANDARDS. WE SCREEN ALL PROSPECTIVE MENTORS PRIOR TO PLACING THEM IN SCHOOLS. OUR SCREENING INCLUDES CRIMINAL BACKGROUND AND REFERENCE CHECKS, A CHECK OF THE NATIONAL SEX OFFENDER REGISTRY, AND A CHECK OF THE DSCYF COURT RECORDS, WHICH CONTAIN THE COURT RECORDS FOR CHILD ABUSE OR NEGLECT CHARGES THAT MAY NOT BE REFLECTED IN A PROSPECTIVE MENTOR'S CRIMINAL HISTORY. IN FY17, WE PROCESSED 695 APPLICATIONS. ALL NEW ADULT MENTORS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND A THREE-HOUR TRAINING SESSION; AT THE TRAINING, THEY ARE GIVEN A MANUAL DEVELOPED BY CONNECTING GENERATIONS THAT HAS BEEN REVIEWED AND APPROVED BY THE NATIONAL MENTORING PARTNERSHIP. MULTIPLE CLASSES ARE AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR DURING BOTH DAYTIME AND EVENING HOURS, AND PROSPECTIVE MENTORS CAN SIGN UP FOR ANY CLASS DAY/TIME THAT MEETS THEIR NEEDS. IN FY17, WE TRAINED 316 ADULTS. WE ALSO PROVIDE TRAINING FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS INTERESTED IN MENTORING; IN FY17, WE TRAINED 177 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. OUR TRAINING IS AVAILABLE TO PROSPECTIVE MENTORS WHO ARE AFFILIATED WITH OTHER MENTORING PROGRAMS (E.G., CATHEDRAL CHOIR SCHOOLS, BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS, DAPI), PROVIDED THE PROGRAM SIGNS A PARTNER AGREEMENT AND ADHERES TO CONNECTING GENERATIONS' STANDARDS AND PRACTICES. CONNECTING GENERATIONS MAINTAINS A SECURE DATABASE FOR PROGRAM COORDINATORS TO HELP THEM MANAGE MENTOR-STUDENT MATCHES AND TRACK PROGRESS. WE COLLECT EVALUATION DATA AT THE BEGINNING AND END OF THE YEAR FROM PARENTS, MENTORS, MENTEES, TEACHERS AND PROGRAM COORDINATORS TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SITE-BASED MENTORING PROGRAMS. WE HAVE STRONG PARTNERSHIPS WITH SCHOOL DISTRICTS, SCHOOLS, BUSINESSES AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THAT SUPPORT MENTORING. AT THE BEGINNING OF FY2017 OVER 1600 DELAWARE PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS WERE BEING MENTORED BY ADULTS AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TRAINED BY CONNECTING GENERATIONS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0SEASONS OF RESPECT (SOR) IS A SET OF FACILITATOR-LED SESSIONS FOR CLASSROOMS AND SMALLS GROUPS THAT TEACH CHILDREN HOW TO IDENTIFY AND DEVELOP SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SKILLS. STUDENTS LEARN HOW TO STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIPS, IMPROVE SELF-ESTEEM, BUILD CONFIDENCE, MANAGE EMOTIONS, MAKE RESPONSIBLE DECISIONS, AND ENHANCE ACADEMIC SUCCESS. SOR SUPPORTS EFFORTS TO IMPROVE SCHOOL CLIMATE, ENHANCE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT (PBS) PROGRAMS, AND IS A TOOL TO ASSIST IN ADDRESSING ANTI-BULLYING EFFORTS. ALL SOR ACTIVITIES ARE TIED TO AMERICAN SCHOOL COUNSELOR ASSOCIATION STANDARDS. SOR COLLABORATES WITH SCHOOL COUNSELORS IN THE DELIVERY OF THE PROGRAM. OUR PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED TO ANY SCHOOL IN DELAWARE. WE PROVIDE COMPREHENSIVE SUPPORT FOR EACH PROGRAM INCLUDING CLASSROOM FACILITATORS; WE ALSO TRAIN SCHOOL PERSONNEL TO PRESENT THE PROGRAM INDEPENDENTLY. OUR 4TH GRADE PROGRAM, "EXPLORATION RESPECT," INTRODUCES CHILDREN TO THE BASIC TENETS OF SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING. RESPECT IS THE KEY ELEMENT IN THIS HIGHLY INTERACTIVE PROGRAM. IN "JOURNEY OF RESPECT," 5TH GRADE STUDENTS EXAMINE THEIR EMOTIONS AND IDENTIFY VALUES THAT REINFORCE RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR. WE ALSO OFFER RESPECT THROUGH THE ARTS (RAP) AS AN AFTER SCHOOL ART PROGRAM FOR ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. "CHARACTER CLIMB" IS A COMPREHENSIVE SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING PROGRAM THAT HAS CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE STATE. THE PROGRAM TRAINS UPPER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS (4TH AND 5TH GRADES) TO PROVIDE SUPPORT TO LOWER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS (GRADES 1-2). "CHARACTER CLIMB" IS CONTINUING TO BUILD AN EVIDENCE BASE; ONCE THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN FULLY TESTED AND UPDATED, IT WILL BE READY TO ROLL OUT TO SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE STATE AS A FEE-FOR-SERVICE PROGRAM. IN FY17, A TOTAL OF 1,739 STUDENTS WERE SERVED IN 550 CLASSROOM HOURS OF SOR SESSIONS.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE ORGANIZATION IS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX UNDER SECTION 501(C)(3) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE.
