Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Connecting generations helps at-risk youth become emotionally strong, resilient, and socially competent individuals who can succeed in school and life. Working exclusively through schools and other educational institutions, our mentoring and social emotional learning programs help children overcome adversity, develop resilience, and build a strong foundation of social emotional skills such as how to set goals, make responsible decisions, manage emotions, and build positive relationships with adults and peers. These skills are essential for students to engage fully in school and to become advocates for their own success. Our work directly supports public education and plays a critical role in helping break the cycle of adversity and poverty in delaware. Our vision is to create strong, sustainable communities through collaborative relationships that create positive, healthy environments in which youth and their families can thrive.

We are delaware's resource for mentoring and for other intergenerational programs. Our mission seeks to help children and adults build purposeful, fulfilling and self-directed lives.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. However, income from certain activities not directly related to the organization's tax-exempt purpose may be subject to taxation as unrelated business income. Generally accepted accounting principles prescribe rules for the recognition, measurement, classification, and disclosure in the financial statements of uncertain tax positions taken or expected to be taken in the organization's tax returns. Management has determined that the organization does not have any uncertain tax positions or associated unrecognized benefits that materially impact the financial statements or related disclosures. Since tax matters are subject to some degree of uncertainty, there can be no assurance that the organization's tax returns will not be challenged by the taxing authorities and that the organization will not be subject to additional tax, penalties, and interest as a result of such challenge.

IRS990/Desc0CREATIVE MENTORING SUPPORTS SCHOOL-BASED ONE-TO-ONE MENTORING BY PROVIDING TECHNICAL EXPERTISE TO SCHOOLS, FREE MENTOR SCREENING AND TRAINING, MENTOR AND STUDENT TRACKING, AND ON-SITE PROGRAM MANAGEMENT. ADULT MENTORS COME INTO SCHOOLS ONCE A WEEK DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR TO WORK DIRECTLY WITH A STUDENT FOR 30-60 MINUTES. MENTORING SESSIONS ARE UNSTRUCTURED AND CAN INCORPORATE ANY NUMBER OF ACTIVITIES AND CONVERSATIONS, DEPENDING ON THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENT. SUCCESSFUL MENTORING RELATIONSHIPS ARE BASED ON TRUST, COMMON INTERESTS AND UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE. ALL OF OUR PARTNER PROGRAMS FOLLOW THE "ELEMENTS OF EFFECTIVE PRACTICE," A SET OF SIX CATEGORIES OF RESEARCH- AND PRACTICE-BASED PROCEDURES ESTABLISHED BY MENTOR: THE NATIONAL MENTORING PARTNERSHIP TO ENSURE THAT THE SAFEST AND MOST EFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIPS ARE CREATED, SUPPORTED AND SUSTAINED FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. MENTORS COMMIT TO AT LEAST ONE YEAR, BUT MOST CONTINUE WELL BEYOND A YEAR. CREATIVE MENTORING CURRENTLY SUPPORTS 75 SCHOOL-BASED PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE STATE: ALL THREE COUNTIES, 10 SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND SPECIAL SCHOOLS (E.G., NEW CASTLE COUNTY DETENTION CENTER AND DAPI CENTERS). CONNECTING GENERATIONS STAFF ALSO DIRECTLY MANAGE MENTORING PROGRAMS AT 16 SCHOOLS IN THREE SCHOOL DISTRICTS (RED CLAY CONSOLIDATED, CAPITAL, AND INDIAN RIVER). IN TOTAL, OVER 1600 ACTIVE ADULT MENTORS WORK WITH APPROXIMATELY 1800 STUDENTS FROM PRE-K TO GRADE 12, DONATING APPROXIMATELY 40,500 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER TIME EACH SCHOOL YEAR. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ALSO MENTOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS IN A FEW SCHOOL DISTRICTS. OUTCOMES, AS MEASURED BY END-OF-YEAR SURVEYS, INCLUDE INCREASED ATTENDANCE, INCREASED SELF-CONFIDENCE, IMPROVED IN-SCHOOL BEHAVIORS, INCREASED ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT, AND IMPROVED RELATIONSHIPS WITH ADULTS (SCHOOL STAFF AND FAMILY MEMBERS). NUMEROUS STUDIES OF SIMILAR SCHOOL-BASED MENTORING PROGRAMS VERIFY THESE OUTCOMES [E.G., BAYER, ET. AL., "SCHOOL-BASED MENTORING PROGRAMS: USING VOLUNTEERS TO IMPROVE THE ACADEMIC OUTCOMES OF UNDERSERVED STUDENTS"].

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE ORGANIZATION IS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX UNDER SECTION 501(C)(3) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE.
