Governance Explanations

FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 11:

The return is sent to all trustees and to outside legal counsel for their review before filing, and the return is filed after their review.

FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 12C:

Each year the existing conflict of interest policy is circulated to the trustees to sign/return (adopted 10/22/15); they must state that they have read and understand the document, and that they do not have any conflicts nor take any action that would appear to constitute a conflict. In addition a questionnaire is sent to trustees along with the policy, asking about any potential conflicts or independence issues, which also must be signed/returned.

FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 15:

FTEs CEO and CFO are employed by The Fund for American Studies (TFAS), a tax-exempt Section 501(c)(3) organization that controls FTE. See Schedule R. They follow TFAS compensation and review process. TFAS Compensation Committee reviews compensation data, including from Forms 990 filed by comparable organizations, in determining the CEOs compensation. The CEO is charged with hiring and setting compensation for other officers and key employees.

FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION C, LINE 19:

Audited financial statements and irs form 990 are made available to the public on the organization's web site or upon request by providing copies or inspection at our office for the same period of disclosure as set forth in section 6104(d). Fte's governing documents and conflict of interest policy are not made available to the public.

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART I, LINE 1, DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION MISSION:

To an economic way of thinking about national and international issues, and to promote excellence in economic education by helping teachers of economics become more effective educators.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A, PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Student programs economics for leaders: efl is a selective week-long summer program that teaches high school students how to integrate economics into the process of decision-making in a hands-on, experiential environment. Programs are held on college campuses across the country. Programs are led by economics professors and leadership instructors selected, nationwide, for their expertise and teaching effectiveness. Morning discussions, activities, and interactive sessions introduce participants to the "economic way of thinking." afternoon sessions build an understanding of leadership and participants practice leadership skills in a fun-filled series of tasks and dilemmas. Students also engage in a creative decision-making challenge in which they apply and demonstrate the skills and knowledge they have gained during the week. Leadership academy: "leadership and economics" is an extension of our economics for leaders program. The program expands the economic reasoning skills learned in efl through 4 days of activities and projects in the interactive style found in efl. Topics include history, government policy, leadership, and economics. Students are challenged to take their efl experience to the next level by applying the economic reasoning propositions to historical analysis and to dilemmas of leadership. One day student seminars: single day programs designed to introduce high school students to economics. Fte offers these programs to high schools across the usa. Each site can accommodate 100 120 students. Instruction is done through interactive lessons and students complete the program with a better understanding of economics. Teacher programs residential programs for teachers economics for leaders: in these week-long programs, high school teachers "go back to schoolare taught by university professors and mentor teachers. What's unique are the games and simulations: instructors run the activities with real students so the teachers can observe the students' interactions. The teachers see, up close, why fte-designed lessons are so effective and leave with a better knowledge of economics, new classroom strategies, and a renewed enthusiasm for teaching. Economic history for leaders: these week-long programs show teachers how to incorporate economics into american history high school classes. Instruction includes activities and lessons designed to teach the economics of pivotal historical events. Economic issues for teachers: in these residential programs, four curricular units using applied economics are presented. Topics are dependent on program location and use issue-based lessons to supplement history, economics, global studies, geography, and civics curricula. The environment and the economy: during these four-day programs, teachers learn how a rational economic approach to the enviroment helps students understand the complexity of enviromental issues. The program curriculum combines both content and methodology. Teachers leave the conference with confidence to teach the material. Professional teacher association conferences: in this three day conference, fte partners with various agencies, such as the federal reserve and world bank, to offer insightful seminars. Guest speakers highlight the missions of partner organizations and critique their effectiveness. Non - residential teacher programs online programs: fte online programs are asychronous and user friendly. They are highly interactive with participants receiving economics content instruction and video demonstrations of activities. Topics offered cover key economic concepts and applied economics. Online interaction is with teachers around the country and world, and graduate credit is available. One day seminars: single topic workshops designed to supplement history, economics, global studies, geography, and civics curricula. Instructional units are comprised of five to seven stand alone lessons, teacher background outlines, classroom activity instructions and demonstratio
