Mission

We facilitate the development of accessory dwelling units that offer a more affordable housing option for both homeowners and renters, creating economically healthy, diverse, multi-generational communities, and protecting the environment by reducing carbon emissions. Our role is to bring public and governmental attention to this opportunity to redevelop the existing housing stock to house a changing society, and to act as champion and guide for homeowners who face obstacles in creating accessory dwelling units.

We educate homeowners and others about the wide-ranging benefits of accessory dwelling units and facilitate the creation of units by providing support directly to homeowners. Accessory dwelling units (adus) play an important role in the creation of housing that is more affordable for both homeowners and renters. We put particular emphasis on junior accessory dwelling units (jadus), a new housing model that makes possible the creation of more affordable housing by repurposing existing bedrooms into private apartments that can be offered for rent or used by caregivers or family members. At our urging, municipalities have created simple and inexpensive permitting tracks for these junior accessory dwelling units and agency fees are being reduced or eliminated. Through the flexible housing program we educate policy makers and associated agencies, nonprofit leaders working on affordable housing, sustainability, senior and women's issues, business leaders focused on economic growth and security, the financial community, and the public, including both homeowners and renters, about the importance of adus and their clear benefits. During 2017 we spoke to hundreds of people via meetings, presentations, and information fairs, and educated many more through our website. Grant funding allows us to offer free phone consultations to homeowners who are considering the creation of a rental unit.
