| GateWay Boarding Academy [GBA] continues to work diligently to maintain a cadre of volunteers and to identify potential staff members in order to maximize continued program growth while balancing program cost increases. This year we strengthened our instructional effectiveness by attracting and hiring a math teacher with a PhD in STEM, a heart to serve youth, and 10+ years of experience teaching a similar student body. We were also able to hire Executive staff beginning in the last quarter of the year. Additionally, GBA continued to vet all new staff and volunteers through an extensive background HR Screening process, and Youth Protection & Reporting training. Also, new this year, although an unexpected change in the student assessment tool was required by HMH, [Houghton/ Mifflin/Harcourt] -the provider of the READ 180 and MATH 180 program used in our After-School, Structured Instructional Support Time program [A.S.S.I.S.T] - staff and volunteers were enabled to flawlessly move to [NWEA] a national assessment format through assessment training provided by the vendor, without charge.Board committees have worked diligently with staff to actively manage the three major GBA programs. GBA continues to serve, in-person, a population which includes Middle and High-school students initially performing at least 2-3 years below grade level in reading/English and/or math, most of whom have active I.E.P.s [qualified as Special Education]. We do so through in-person instruction with a continued requirement for students and staff to maintain COVID vaccinations. Additionally, we have intensified recruitment of Middle School students thereby giving the greatest amount of time for students to achieve grade level performance. Our students continue to benefit from the consistent, collaborative, and caring approach of our professional staff and volunteers serving at GBA. Programmatically, GBA provided 36 weeks of math, and of Reading/English remedial instruction with class sizes of less than 5, in the A.S.S.I.S.T program. This program combines the effectiveness of proven research-based computer reinforced curriculum with learning style specific, individualized instruction in a culture of acceptance, despite any academic or problem-solving challenges. Initial and subsequent periodic assessment is used to verify academic growth. 100% of the students in GBA increased one or more grade levels in reading and 50% of them increased two or more grade levels in math in 2024. Beyond the needed academic support, in 2024 GateWay continued to engage business owners from the local community, certified in their respective vocations to provide experiences that reinforced the real-world relevance of academics through the summer, Earn and Learn Pre-Apprentice Program. Areas included: electrician, culinary arts, construction and woodworking, Additionally, GBA provided a week-long summer camp experience designed to strengthen students in four core areas, temperance, endurance, respect and accountability. | - | $94,750 |
