Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 2: Description of Business or Family Relationship of Officers, Directors, Et

Mother of the executive director sits on the board

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B: Form 990 Review Process

Board of Directors reviews and approves the 990 before filing with the IRS.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts

The board of directors reviews and signs the conflict of interest policy annually.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15A: Compensation Review & Approval Process - CEO, Top Management

The Board determines ED compensation through a process whereby a compensation committee evaluates the labor market and comparable salary information. Ongoing compensation rates are determined by a process of performance evaluation and market-based increases to cost of living. The ED is not involved in the process of determining compensation, nor is any related party. 2020 was the first year the ED position was full-time and salaried. The ad hoc committee then consisted of 4 members. The committee researched eight non-profit organizations, within the same labor market, that had similarity in some way to TRI. Size of organization, annual revenue, age of organization were taken into consideration when looking at the ED salary for each of these organizations, compared to TRI. Based on the compilation of that data, the revenue history and revenue projections for TRI for the coming year, the committee made a recommendation to the Board of Directors for the ED salary and benefits. The board voted and approved the recommendation.

IRS990/Desc0Ethiopia Operations: We partner with rural communities to create sustainable pathways out of poverty by: ? Delivering high-quality health education, empowering community health trainers, and giving direct medical care so that people can LIVE long and healthy lives ? Restoring the opportunity for children and adults to LEARN through high quality early childhood, primary, secondary, and vocational education ? Equipping men and women to EARN a predictable income through business development training and savings groups to create financial resilience ? Building the capacity of community leaders to maintain program initiatives, so that communities can sustain gains and THRIVE for years to come. In 2020, our program services and implementation in Ethiopia, including the rehabilitation, were supplemented with immediate relief and response to the COVID-19 crisis, which created severe shortages of food, labor, and household income in communities where we work. We provided health education awareness and training to all beneficiary households, and did several nutritional support distributions of food and cooking oil, to offset food insecurity. Additionally, we distributed personal protective equipment (PPE) to program beneficiaries, as well as disease prevention literature, that was posted in households. We worked closely with the Community Development Committees (CDC) that Three Roots International has developed in each community, as well as with government stakeholders, to support a Covid-19 monitoring strategy through community organizing. To date, there has not been a single case of Covid-19 reported in Three Roots? partner communities. Our existing programs continued in 2021: administration of a community school for 371 vulnerable students, grades K-8, professional development for teachers in community schools, and the surrounding geographic area, development of Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs), and administration of quarterly parent meetings for 200 parents, to increase participation in education. To ensure continued learning at home, while the community school was closed due to Covid-19, we distributed 80 solar-powered radios to provide remote learning opportunities for radio education to 8th-grade students, in preparation for the national exam. Savings and loan groups served 80 women, and 46 small business loans were distributed among members, by group decision, for the development of micro-businesses and financial resilience and social support networks. 94 families strengthened their families? health and hygiene through the US of home latrines, built following training and support from Three Roots. Though our programs had to be altered, according to government regulations for community gathering, we maintained our direct support to all beneficiaries. We continue to partner with government and local stakeholders to ensure that projects are well-supported, focus on contextually relevant methodologies for change, and address micro and macro systems within each community.

IRS990/MissionDesc0By partnering with vulnerable communities in Ethiopia, we strive to equip vulnerable people to live stable and sustainable lives. Our mission is to cultivate community development and economic capacity by empowering families through education, health and income generating activities. Our work with vulnerable communities over the past 10 years has firmly formed our understanding of this reality: quality education, access to accurate information and direct physical health care, and the opportunity to secure income and economic stability are critical factors in sustaining life outside of poverty. Our model is strategically designed to replace the cycle of generational loss, joblessness and chronic illness with a cycle of restoration by focusing our programs on strengthening education, health care and livelihoods. True sustainability is only possible when the attitudes, beliefs and behaviors within a community support its continued development. We are relentlessly focused on increasing com

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Child Sponsorship program: In 2020, 95 children in our sponsorship program received educational and medical support, tutorial classes, household training and encouragement through our sponsorship program in order to provide critical support to the most destitute households as they increase their income and health-promoting behaviors. Families are selected for participation in the sponsorship program by the Community Development Committee, which is trained and formed by Three Roots, according to specific criteria. This ensures that sponsorship households are selected by community members, and that the community recognizes the sponsorship program as being in place to support the entire community, through enhanced child development, health and education outcomes.

IRS990ScheduleF/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt01) Three Roots International (TRI) conducts many of its programs through grant funding to the Ethiopian Kaleheywet Church (EKHC) identified in Part II. The Country Director (Part 1, line 1) provides oversight of all activities performed by EKHC, ensuring that quality and effectiveness meet TRI standards and further the mission of TRI. 2) The Country Director also collects, reviews and sends to TRI's U.S. headquarters monthly financial reports and receipts prepared by EKHC that substantiate expenditures of grant funds. 3) TRI's Executive Director is in constant contact with the Country Director to monitor progress of programs, guide decision-making, continually assess the implications of developments on the ground for future planning. 4) A U.S. accountant reviews EKHC financial reporting, verifies expenses are appropriately supported by receipts, converts transactions to USD, records in TRI?s general ledger and generates budget vs. actual reporting for review by the Executive Director. 5) The Executive Director travels to Ethiopia several times each year for multiple purposes, including monitoring program effectiveness first-hand and evaluate EKHC?s performance.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Board of Directors reviews and approves the 990 before filing with the IRS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2The board of directors reviews and signs the conflict of interest policy annually.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3The Board determines ED compensation through a process whereby a compensation committee evaluates the labor market and comparable salary information.
