The mission of the drew lewis foundation is to improve the quality of life in underserved urban neighborhoods by partnering with existing area organizations to establish community hubs, which serve to boost the economic and physical wellness of neighborhood residents of all ages through education and vocational programs, garden-to-table initiatives, public health services and community events.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 28

The fairbanks continues to grow as a community hub with phase ii being completed and multiple community partners using this space to serve the community. Life360 daycare opened and has created 10-12 new jobs while life360 church hosts a free community dinner every sunday evening, followed by faith conversations and worship songs. Redeemer church holds their service on sunday mornings at the fairbanks and hosts a variety of community events serving the grant beach area. Springfield community gardens have a market garden on the property that is used for research and demonstration and employs two vista workers. A computer lab for community classes was developed through a grant awarded by the southeast rotary club for 20,000. Approximately 250 msu and drury students engaged in service learning opportunities at the fairbanks in 2016.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 29

Drew lewis foundation began managing the northwest project grant, a 1.3 million 5-year pilot project which seeks to help families overcome challenges of living in poverty through financially supporting weekly community-driven programs. Every thursday evening an average of 50-100 individuals of all ages in the community meet at the fairbanks. The programming on thursday evenings works to build social capital while offering education on financial literacy, physical and mental well-being, family dynamics and relationships, and other life skills. Programming includes: weekly dinner and food resources; diaper and hygiene resources; life-skills education for adults; wellness and general check-ups through the msu nursing program. A loan consolidation and credit repair program was also developed with cu community credit union to set families up for long-term success. Partnerships for the northwest project include over 52 organizations and individuals.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 30

Other community initiatives included: 1) continued a community sewing group with members meeting weekly to repair clothing and learn new sewing skills. 2) several neighborhood betterment/clean-up days engaging students and community members in volunteer service. 3) held weekly parenting and life skills classes. 4) partnered with the ymca to increase reading levels for the children of grant beach. 5) hosted their 2nd annual community fundraising event, fashion forward, which features children of northwest springfield modeling an outfit in a fashion show and sharing their dreams for the future. 6) developing "the blue house project" which seeks to purchase homes in northwest springfield, update the homes to modern standards and then offer them on a rent to own basis to northwest project participants. One home was purchased through a private funder in 2016. 7) established "one church, one family" program to connect families with churches that will meet their practical needs at five times during the year. 8) received several awards for their work in the community.
