IRS990/Desc0Code: USG20 + USG21- This a project to continue with the existing work on documentation and advocacy, a new project was recently approved by USAID. The project has three main goals. * Contribute to the preservation of the Yazidi culture by recording testimonies containing a comprehensive overview of the Yazidi historical and cultural heritage and publishing academic articles in a dedicated review. * Gather evidence that further facilitates legal accountability by interviewing survivors and witnesses and locating mass graves and killing sites. This includes informing survivors about the legal remedies available to them under Iraqi and Kurdish law and putting them in touch with local lawyers. * Advocate for the Yazidi community by using the collected data (e.g., campaign for transitional justice and post-conflict reconstruction strategies; campaign to diffuse the Yazidi culture, especially to the diaspora). The documentation team has two separate offices, one in Duhok and one Sinjar. These teams are situated to best reach the Yazidi community-based in the displacement camps and a second office in Sinune for the returnees. The project started in December 2018 and will continue until Sep 30, 2023.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0(Code: SVM21 + SVM21) - Yazda started providing basic health services in Sinjar in early 2015. The extensive destruction of all infrastructures made it necessary to operate through a Mobile Medical Unit. The Dutch donor - SV has been funding the project from April 2018. Based in Sinjar, this mobile medical unit brings basic health care to 14 villages on the north side of the mountain. Patients are treated for basic health issues, including chronic diseases, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. The team provides approximately 1,300-2,000 consultations per month to a community of between 7,000-10,000 on a 5-day-a-week schedule in the villages of Adeeka, Tairaf, Aldeenah, Kharbah, Qane, Bayeev, Naqsay, Bakrah, Kormale, Zerwa, Bakhilif, Shorka, Gurmiz, and Karse. The majority of the villages are hard to reach and several households do not own cars or any means of transportation. The project is due to finish on the 31st March with the possibility of extending funding.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0(Code: IOMSA21) Return of Displaced in Nineveh - Yazda and IOM, funded by USAID Yazda has also partnered with the International Organization for Migration to support the sustainable and effective return and reintegration of the displaced population in Nineveh Plains and West Nineveh through a multidisciplinary approach. This approach utilizes livelihood, economic independence, access to services, social cohesion, PSS support, diaspora engagement, and administrative support. This 12-month-long, USAID-funded project has several components aimed at assisting returnees with reintegration. Yazda opened a new office in Sinune to oversee the activities and programs, mainly focusing on the large collective villages on the north side of Sinjar, but with some attention also on Sinjar City. Yazda has hired two Psychosocial Support Therapists based in Sinune to start case management and provide support sessions for people in need. This is due to start in 2021. Thirteen locations have been selected for livelihood support as part of this project. These are nine collective villages on the north side: Khanasor, Sinune, Dugre, Duhola, Borek, Gubhal, Zorava and Hardan; and three locations on the south side: Sinjar City, Sulagh and Wardiya and Bashiqa and Bahzani. Yazda is on track to establish 90 small businesses during the 24-month length of the project, and also to support selected communities with vocational training. Education is vital for families with children to return. Yet the government schools in Sinjar lack funding, support, and staff. Class sizes are large and there are often unpaid volunteers instead of teachers. Yazda has assessed the schools and based on the information acquired, it has selected 8 of the most vulnerable schools to support monthly with small stipends for 35 volunteers and allowances for each school's stationery. These eight schools have already been receiving some monetary support since December 2018. Community engagement and mobilization through volunteer groups is also an important element of this project. Yazda had a meeting with all the youth groups in the area and selected six groups whose visions and plans can best support the objectives of this project. All of these six groups have a center where they gather. As well as having independent goals, these groups support Yazda with information, liaising with the community, and promoting safe return through advocacy and social media. In return, Yazda is providing monetary support for training events and capacity building. * Yazidi Survivor Network Description: The Yazidis Survivors Network (YSN) is a program that supports and empowers survivors of the ISIS Genocide, helping them to speak out about their experiences, express their needs, fight for justice, and pursue accountability and Human Rights on national and international levels. YSN will also advocate for the expansion of effective programs and services for survivors and their vulnerable communities in Iraq. This project is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. Click here for more information.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0(Code: ANC21) - Project Description: Preserving Cultural Heritage of Minority Communities in Iraq Project Goal The overarching goal of this two-year project is to preserve the cultural heritage of religious and ethno-religious minority groups in Iraq. To meet this goal, the project has two strategic objectives: 1. Strategic Objective 1: Partner with the Catholic Diocese of Mosul's Centre Numérique des Manuscrits Orientaux (CNMO) and support the Syriac Museum in Erbil to preserve, document, digitize, and make accessible historic collections that tell the story of northern Iraq's vibrant Christian community. 2. Strategic Objective 2: Partner with Yazda to build Yazidi's capacity to preserve, document, digitize, and make accessible the intangible heritage of their community and promote the survival of the living Yazidi culture in its many forms. The completion of these strategic objectives will facilitate communal healing, inter-communal understanding, and appreciation of the diversity of Iraq, a fundamental step toward the promotion and actualization of democracy.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1(Code: LUX21 + LUX22) - MHPSS, Case Management and Advocacy Service for Survivors of ISIS Atrocities from the fund of LUX government. Yazda is proposing an integrated project to support survivors of genocide, mass atrocities, and human rights violations in Iraq through: * The provision of General Protection services to survivors and victims of GBV including (i) Case Management, (ii) Mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) (iii) Legal support (iv) Cash for protection * Reimbursement of medical costs and food and NFI kits for survivors and victims of GBV. * Build capacity of Yazidi Survivors Network Members * Strategic advocacy on survivors' needs, Yazidi Survivors Law, women's rights, genocide recognition, justice and accountability. * Raising awareness within Iraq and internationally about human rights violations against the Yazidis and other communities in Iraq. The project will also advocate around the issues of inclusion of survivors and will produce greater understanding, recognition, and rebuilding of communities that have experienced collective trauma and conflict. It will also help challenge the assumption that traumatized survivors cannot be expected to speak for themselves. When given the right support, survivors have consistently proven themselves to be resilient and effective advocates for their own needs and those of their peers and fellow community members. Yazda will utilize a 'wrap-around' approach that addresses the different needs of survivors and the Yazidi communities. This approach includes and coordinates actors from across the various sectors and segments of Iraqi and KRI society. One such example of Yazda's successful utilization of this approach is its work in advocating for the recognition of the 2014 ISIS genocide against the Yazidis and other minority groups and proper acknowledgment of ISIS crimes. Survivors were the driving force in this effort. Yazda achieved great success by enabling survivors to talk about their experiences and by facilitating survivors' interactions with media and important political actors to raise awareness of the issues. This is what sets Yazda's approach apart from other standardized, top-down efforts. Yazda's programs focus not only in providing short-term assistance to survivors and vulnerable populations in the region, but they also seek to empower and stand up for these individuals and communities as drivers of reconciliation, human rights promotion, educational improvement, and economic revitalization. That is, Yazda recognizes that such efforts cannot be achieved without the careful input of these individuals and communities themselves. This project aims to provide survivors of ISIS atrocities with essential services, promote their well-being, and advocate for their human rights and the rights of their persecuted community members. The project consists of the following objectives and activities, as shown in detail in the project work plan.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc2Support to Survivors of ISIS Enslavement with the support of the Australian government Yazda's MHPSS support to survivors will first begin with developing participant enrollment criteria - identifying women and girls for whom wrap-around services are essential for their return and reintegration into their home societies. In addition, this initial period of work will involve developing standard operating procedures or SOPs for case management and MHPSS services per the Kurdistan region's SGBV cluster standards, as well as SOPs on both internal and external referral pathways. Following this initial work, Yazda will run incident intake and enroll 100 beneficiaries who are eligible for services, develop individualized action plans that are based on mutually identified needs, and run a comprehensive case management services program that ensures that all 100 beneficiaries have access to all the benefits to which they are entitled, including PSS on an individual and group basis. Objective 1 - Victims of SGBV will become more resilient and reintegrate faster into society. This will be possible through the following activities Offering MH-PSS and Case Management services to girls and women victims of SGBV because of their religion Providing peer-to-peer integration support activities Facilitation a safe personal exploration of religious identity for survivors of religious persecution, Offering referral pathways to specialized services. Yazda has an open-door policy meaning that many beneficiaries often come to our office requesting services. This also translates to how the beneficiaries trust in our services and feel safe in our facilities. Objective 2 - Yazda staff and other religious freedom defenders have access to MH-PSS. The activity under this objective will be done through external trainers provided by Freedom House. The training will be online. b. What do you expect to achieve from this program or campaign First and foremost, to provide psychosocial support to address the beneficiaries who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder to enable them to overcome their traumatic experiences. Target - Clearly define who will be affected by this project and describe any previous experience working with the specified target. 100 women and girls receive case management services which include MHPP, and referral pathways among others. 75 women and girls receive psychosocial support 50 women and girls are referred to specialized services which may include medical, legal, shelter, livelihood, food items, NFI, and other types of support. Administrative support Yazda provides various administrative support, including Registering the Yazidi survivors of the 2014 genocide for Bataqa cards, in the hopes that the payments would restart again and provide the survivors access to a small pension. The financial scheme was awarded by the Iraqi central government's Social Affairs Department, following a lobbying campaign initiated and led by Yazda at the central government level in 2016. Access to other financial schemes provided by other NGOs, in which survivors receive a one-off payment. Support in obtaining copies of Identity Cards and other documents lost during the conflict. Liaise with UNHCR for resettlement
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc3Advocacy and Prevention of Forced Child Militarization in the Yazidi community and other minorities. With the support of NPA, in September to December 2020, Yazda conducted a Pilot Project that included a baseline assessment. Despite the small sample interviewed, which gives us qualitative data, rather than a quantitative one, the findings nevertheless point to a potentially alarming situation of forced militarization of Children in Sinjar. The report can be found in the attachment. We find that 6 out of 36 children respondents said that they have been asked to join a military group, representing 18%, while 34% of adults interviewed confirmed their children had been asked to join military groups. As this data comes from a relatively small group of interviewees, Yazda is interested in continuing data collection and monitoring in order to come to more conclusive data over large numbers of interviewees to assess the impact on the wider community. Should the above percentages be confirmed through wider surveys, the number of children at risk would be alarming. In the same group of 52 adults, 64% disagree with the statement "Only people over the age of 18 should be responsible for the security of Sinjar" implying that they believe also individuals below 18 years of age should be involved, and 60% feel pressure to have one or more children leave school to work and earn money. Again, this finding reflects only partially the overall situation in Sinjar, but should the numbers be extrapolated to a wider sample group, it would be revealing of the deeply rooted values of acceptance values contrary to Children Rights. We also find that 13 of the 34 interviewed children mentioned that financial matters prevent them from achieving their goals, whilst amongst adults, 9 out of 53 respondents said that their children are working, mainly as daily workers, adding up to 17%. This clearly points to the link between values, financial stability and a sense of opportunity in life. These and other findings on our small sample group hint to of a community facing internal tensions around core values such as the role and rights of children, challenged by economic needs, pressure from armed groups, lack of alternatives, and, in the case of Children Heads of Households, lack of parental supervision. Role models remain in part the ones of a war-torn country, where bearing a weapon, joining armed groups, and participating in providing security, (whatever that could be), are still activities that can involve or attract children.
