Mission

To protect and support children, collaborate with professionals and engage the community to end child abuse and neglect.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Medical examinations: our medical and nursing staff specializes in evaluating children who are suspected to have been abused or neglected. Their role is to provide physical abuse and sexual abuse assessments as well as comprhensive physical exams for children placed in foster care. In addition, our staff is able to provide expert medical opinions to referral agencies regarding suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.in 2012 the agency provided 735 medical exams to evaluate child sexual, physical abuse or neglect. The agency has broadened its services beyond sexual abuse and now provides medical exams for children suspected of neglect and physical abuse. This may include an evaluation for drug exposure. In 2012, the agency provided 328 children with this type of evaluation, resulting in more than 67% testing positive for cocaine, methamphetamine, cpc or marijuana.
Activity 3
Referral and advocacy: the purpose of the advocacy and referral program is to ensure the family has the necessary support and resources to deal with the recent abuse of their child. Each family is assigned a referral specialist who provides a plan for services after the investigation. These may include counseling referrals, legal referrals or education. In addition the agency provides case coordination for the child abuse investigative team. This service allows for the agency to ensure that communication is shared across disciplines and the focus of the coordination is to improve the process of investigations. In 2012 the agency provided more than 2,284 advocacy, case cooridiantion or support contacts to children served by the agency.

THE CASE COORDINATORS WERE ESTABLISHED IN NEBRASKA STATUTE TO ENSURE COLLABORATION ACROSS DISCIPLINES DURING THE INVESTIGATION OF CHILD ABUSE. PROJECT HARMONY EMPLOYS 4 CASE COORDINATORS.TRAINING AND EDUCATION: IN 2012 THE AGENCY PROVIDED TRAINING TO 6,998 PROFESSIONALS IN THE METRO AREA. THE NEBRASKA ALLIANCE IS ACCREDITED BY THE NATIONAL CHILDREN'S ALLIANCE, AND PROJECT HARMONY SERVES AS THE FISCAL AGENT FOR THIS ASSOCIATION. FUNDING FOR THESE ACTIVITIES COMES FROM THE FEDERAL AND STATE RESOURCES. THE EXPENSES COVER A POSITION (STATE COORDINATOR) AND TRAINING AND SUPPORT TO THE 7 CHILD ADVOCACY CENTERS. NEBRASKA HAS SEVEN ACCREDITED CHILD ADVOCACY CENTERS, LOCATED IN NORFOLK, OMAHA, LINCOLN, GRAND ISLAND, KEARNEY, NORTH PLATTE, AND SCOTTSBLUFF. A CHILD INTERVIEW SPECIALIST WILL CONDUCT A VIDEO-TAPED FORENSIC INTERVIEW WITH THE CHILD. ONE OF THE GOALS OF THIS INTERVIEW IS TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF TIMES THE CHILD MUST TELL THE STORY OF HIS/HER ABUSE. REDUCING THE NUMBER OF INTERVIEWS REDUCES THE TRAUMA OF THE CHILD. IN 2012 PROJECT HARMONY PROVIDED MORE THAN 1,228 FORENSIC INTERVIEWS.
