After the harvest (ath) rescues nutritious fruits and vegetables from going to waste and donates them to agencies that serve hungry people, primarily in greater kansas city. Our volunteers glean after the harvest, picking what's left in farmers' fields and picking up already harvested leftover produce. The majority of the funds we raise helps us procure semi- truckloads of donated produce that might otherwise end up in landfills. Harvesters-the community food network is our primary produce distribution partner, and ath is harvesters' largest local produce donor. Ath provided more than 3.5 million pounds of fresh produce for hungry people in missouri and kansas in 2019, with the vast majority going to people living in the 26-county area served by harvesters.

“Through the gleaning program, ath hosted 143 field gleanings and 276 produce pickups, distributing 72 varieties of produce to agencies serving hungry families, children and seniors in our community. Also on the gleaning side, 168 local farmers/growers donated. Ath worked with 841 volunteers to glean 1,155 times for a total of 3,584 volunteer gleaner hours. These hours were valued at 35,840 of labor to get this fresh food into the hands of hungry kansas citians. Further analysis revealed that 62 groups gleaned fields and orchards with ath in 2019, including schools, faith congregations, scout troops and partner corporations. Corporate partners included agforce, demdaco, john deere, amc and menufy. Civic organizations included goodness grows, several girl scouts troops, alpha phi omega and the centurians. Schools included pembroke and shoal creek elementary. And 2019 saw a plethora of government groups and agencies glean, including department of homeland security, office of medicare hearings and appeals, and the epa. Ath hosted two luncheons, featuring the results of our outcomes study with dr. Cheryl gibson, kumc. Financed by the hall family foundation, this project sought to quantify the impact of after the harvest on the people we serve - including personnel at agencies, their clientele, the farmers who grow the food and the volunteers who pick it. The events featured a veggie meter, a device used to detect caratinoids in the skin as a way to measure fruit and vegetable consumption. Ath launched its healthy harvest heroes monthly giving program in 2019, and by the end of the year, we had 22 monthly donors. At the end of 2019, ath had provided 19 million pounds of fresh produce since its inception in may 2014.”

FURTHER ANALYSIS REVEALED THAT 62 GROUPS GLEANED FIELDS AND ORCHARDS WITH ATH IN 2019, INCLUDING SCHOOLS, FAITH CONGREGATIONS, SCOUT TROOPS AND PARTNER CORPORATIONS. CORPORATE PARTNERS INCLUDED AGFORCE, DEMDACO, JOHN DEERE, AMC AND MENUFY. CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDED GOODNESS GROWS, SEVERAL GIRL SCOUTS TROOPS, ALPHA PHI OMEGA AND THE CENTURIANS. SCHOOLS INCLUDED PEMBROKE AND SHOAL CREEK ELEMENTARY. AND 2019 SAW A PLETHORA OF GOVERNMENT GROUPS AND AGENCIES GLEAN, INCLUDING DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY, OFFICE OF MEDICARE HEARINGS AND APPEALS, AND THE EPA. ATH HOSTED TWO LUNCHEONS, FEATURING THE RESULTS OF OUR OUTCOMES STUDY WITH DR. CHERYL GIBSON, KUMC. FINANCED BY THE HALL FAMILY FOUNDATION, THIS PROJECT SOUGHT TO QUANTIFY THE IMPACT OF AFTER THE HARVEST ON THE PEOPLE WE SERVE - INCLUDING PERSONNEL AT AGENCIES, THEIR CLIENTELE, THE FARMERS WHO GROW THE FOOD AND THE VOLUNTEERS WHO PICK IT.
