After the harvest (ath) rescues nutritious fruits and vegetables from going to waste and donates them to agencies that serve hungry people, primarily in greater kansas city. Our volunteers glean after the harvest, picking what's left in farmers' fields and picking up already harvested leftover produce. The majority of the funds we raise helps us procure semi- truckloads of donated produce that might otherwise end up in landfills. Harvesters-the community food network is our primary produce distribution partner, and ath is harvesters' largest local produce donor. Ath provided more than 3.5 million pounds of fresh produce for hungry people in missouri and kansas in 2019, with the vast majority going to people living in the 26-county area served by harvesters.

“The covid-19 pandemic struck in march 2020, changing our planet, our country, our state, our community and our organization in profound ways. On march 16, the ath staff began to work from home because the office didn't accommodate safe social distancing. The gleaning program crafted strict program rules based on cdc guidelines, in order to keep our staff and volunteers safe as we worked to get more fresh produce to partner agencies. The demand for food sky-rocketed as agencies saw 50-75 percent increase in need. Simultaneously, as restaurants, schools, cafeterias and corporations closed our farmers saw their retail markets shut down, and many were left with produce they couldn't sell. Many farmers called after the harvest to pick up and distribute this produce so it wouldn't go to waste. Ath staff worked from home the rest of the year. We had come to the end of a 5-year lease on our office space, and we gave up the office in the vfw headquarters at 34th and broadway in kansas city, moving our office equipment and furniture into storage. We set up our staff with the equipment they needed to do their work at home and bought zoom licenses for the staff members. Things worked well for the most part, and the staff was largely able to stay safe. Recognizing the growing need for food, the ath development team stepped up their efforts to raise money, and funding partners responded generously. Foundations in kansas city came together to form the greater kansas city regional covid-19 response and recovery fund, which funded after the harvest, among other nonprofits. Additionally, local, regional and national foundations supported ath at never-before-seen levels, some sending funds before we could even request them, or sending two checks in 2020. Other funders, like health forward foundation, released previously restricted funding so that their grantees could use the money has they needed to in order to respond to the crisis. Ath also received a remarkable donation from a new major donor - peter mallouk, a renown financial planner in kansas city. In terms of fundraising, 2020 was a remarkable year for after the harvest. Ath provided nearly 3.5 million pounds of fresh produce for hungry people in missouri and kansas in 2020, with the vast majority of produce going to people living in the 26-county area served by harvesters. All told, ath provided produce to 380 agencies in 2020, including harvesters. Other food banks receiving ath produce included just food in lawrence, ks, and the ozarks food harvest in springfield, mo. In terms of truckloads, ath provided 73 truckloads bearing 17 varieties of produce, the vast majority of which went to our largest produce distribution partner. Ath continues to be the largest local produce donor to harvesters - the community food network.”
“The gleaning program hosted 154 gleanings, 221 farm salvages, 221 farmers market salvages and 39 distributor salvages, distributing 84 types of produce by 183 produce donors, including 56 new growers/donors. Produce pickups in 2020 grew 153% over 2019 totals. A total of 623 unduplicated volunteers gleaned 1,407 times, donating 3,475 hours. At 10 per hour, the total volunteer time spent engaged in ath's mission was valued at 34,745. This is not included on the financial statements as this time in 2020, ath launched a fundraising campaign for its farm fresh local food expansion, an effort that included the purchase of a refrigerated truck, the lease of cold storage space and the launch of a gleaning office lawrence, ks. The support of three foundations brought this expansion to life, giving the gleaning program an opportunity to expand exponentially.”
