IRS990/Desc0Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship (DGA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and an accredited formal Apprenticeship in "managed grazing" dairy production. The Apprenticeship consists of 4000 hours over two years and combines on-farm employment and training under an approved Master Dairy Grazier with related instruction, which includes formal coursework through accredited education providers, discussion groups, pasture walks, and farming conferences. DGA developed the curriculum and work-based competencies that are registered with the Department of Labor for the occupation of Dairy Grazier. Entrants become Apprentices, Journey Dairy Grazier, and eventually Masters themselves on a career path that has been used in the trades for more than a century. The organization conducts outreach and recruits potential Masters and Apprentices, assesses and approves Master (employer) farm sites, coordinates related instruction components, monitors the mentoring relationship, tracks Apprentice progress through on-the-job training and related instruction hours and requirements, and provides educational, technical, and business planning support services to Apprenticeship participants. The following are summaries are key activities in 2016:1) Administrative Partnerships and Program Expansion into Nine States: Iowa, Maine, Missouri, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Wisconsin. As a National Apprenticeship with the U.S. Department of Labor-Employment and Training Administration, DGA has sought to expand in a way that provides consistent and high quality training and also respects local expertise and local needs. In 2016 DGA entered into administrative partnerships with Cornell University and South Central New York Regional Extension, the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture, the University of Missouri and MU-Extension, and Wolfe's Neck Farm in Maine to deliver the program in those states. These partners are well-networked in the farming communities that they serve as well as with other institutions and community-based organizations in their states/regions. 2) Online Courses for Improved AccessibilityIn addition to on-farm training, DGA includes related instruction, which consists of formal classes, peer discussion groups, and other learning opportunities. Formal classes in Dairy Nutrition, Herd Health, Milk Quality, Pasture Management, and Soils & Composting were developed in collaboration with by Wisconsin based educational institutions Northcentral Technical College, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, and the University of Wisconsin. Classes were delivered in seminar format in Wisconsin and initially DGA sought out similar institutions in other states. The difficulty in finding local courses that meet program requirements in all states where DGA operates prompted the development of online courses. Core courses, including a new Farm Business Management class, are all now available online to Apprentices. In addition, elective hours are built into the curriculum so that classes that address local issues, such as heat stress in Missouri, or individual needs, such as a mechanics class, can count toward related instruction hours. Elective course hours are evaluated and approved on a case by case basis by the DGA National Apprenticeship Committee. 3) Local Education Coordinators for Masters, Apprentices, and Journey Dairy GraziersOn-the-ground Education Coordinators, who have contracts directly with DGA or who work for partner organizations, are grazing specialists and/or agriculture educators in the community. Each Master-Apprentice pair is assigned an Education Coordinator, who makes monthly farm visits of the program to provide guidance, facilitate communication, and address any concerns. This individual also organizes peer-to-peer discussion groups around production and management issues for Apprentice cohort, which helps to build relationships and enhances learning.
