“The two co-founders are founding members of the organization.”
“Pursuant to the organization's articles of organization and bylaws, the founding members have the right to appoint board members.”
“Copies of the center's form 990 are provided to all members of the board for their review prior to filing of the return.”
“Copies of the center's form 1023 and form 990 are available for public inspection at the center's office. The center will provide copies of the forms 1023 and 990 upon request.”
“The center makes copies of its governing documents and financial statement available to the public upon request.”
“In 2013 the form 990 contained inaccurate information related to the role of our board. The center for open science has a board of advisors who have acted in an advisory capacity to the board of directors, brian nosek and jeffrey spies. This structure was active in 2014.”
“Cos is a non-profit technology company aiming to promote openness, integrity, and reproducibility of scientific research. Cos accomplishes this by: (1) providing free tools and services such as the open science framework (osf; http://osf.io/) to support research and data management; (2) engaging in community-building activities to promote transparency and openness and nudge the incentives driving researchers' behavior toward openness; and (3) conducting metascience research - research on scientific practices - to identify areas and methods to improve research efficiency.”
“Infrastructure: cos supports and maintains the osf (www.osf.io) to help researchers manage and archive their research, privately or publicly. In 2014, the osf gained a total of 7,909 users with 8,267 projects, 1,789 of which were public, 1,445 registered studies, 25 registered published studies and total downloads exceeding 226,000. Extensive improvements to the osf were made in 2014. This includes the following: - dropbox add-on modifications - gitlab prototyping - preprint service prototyping - file rendering back-end updated to make it easier for open source developers to contribute - share framework for harvesting and aggregating data - share metadata gathering add-ons (e.g., altmetrics, impactstory, clinical trials) - box add-on prototype - mirroring prototype - refactor of search to use more flexible and robust elasticsearch - view-only links - improved logging and error handling; centralization with sentry - add-on framework improvements - handle unicode throughout site to better accommodate international users - improvements in presentation submission service - profile improvements and additions - non-bibliographic contributors (e.g., admin assistant) - improved security and credential management workflows - badge baking prototype - significant addition of tests - dashboard improvements”
“Metascience: cos supports research on scientific practices. These efforts can inform best practices and serve as platforms to demonstrate reproducible research methods. Some achievements from 2014 include: - publication of a special issue of social psychology of 15 registered reports of replications of important research in that field - the first many labs project was published in the social psychology special issue in may 2014 and received substantial attention (37 citations already). - many labs 2 and many labs 3 have completed data collection and are now in the data analysis phase. Many labs 2 includes 28 effects, more than 90 laboratories, and more than 125 contributors (about 3x the size of the original). Many labs 3 examines 10 effects to examine variation in effect sizes across the academic semester in 20 labs. The many labs projects are a means of building community to conduct replications, attention to the results, and a positive framing for the purpose and goals of replication. - the reproducibility project: psychology (rpp) had 91 studies with completed data collections and 85 with completed data analysis with 19 more expected in early 2015. - the reproducibility project: cancer biology is making steady progress. 46/50 original authors have been contacted to review proposed replication studies, and 23/50 experiments have been assigned to science exchange providers. 12/50 replication proposals have been sent for peer review, and 6/50 approved experimental protocols (final registered report on osf) are ready to be conducted and analyzed by science exchange providers.”
“Community: cos fosters open science communities of researchers, developers, and leaders. Many infrastructure projects in development outside cos will increase openness in science. Cos is working to establish an open developer community which will enhance collaboration and interactivity amongst siloed efforts. Further, an active open science community is essential for testing and improving infrastructure and practices. Open science practices will accelerate dramatically if stakeholders with levers for change create incentives or requirements for researchers. Cos promotes open science practices with journals, funders, researchers, and societies. - cos attended and participated in leading technology conferences including pycon, pytn, and pyohio. Cos had an estimated 360 active open science collaboration members and presented at 4 major conferences including the spsp research integrity symposium, the association for psychological science (aps) workshop, apa, and assa - american economic association and presented at numerous smaller conferences such as eastern psychological association, aaas science and technology policy forum, west coast experiments conference, and the european conference on personality. Through conferences, meetings, and workshops, cos gave over 70 presentations in 2014. Additionally cos participated in 2 grant proposal outreach projects to the national institute of health (nih), one of which was awarded in late 2014. - cos has formal relationships with the association for psychological science (aps), the american geophysical union (agu), the american association for the advancement of science (aaas), and the association of research libraries (arl). Cos is developing relationships with the american society for cell biology (ascb), the american psychological association (apa), the american political science association (apsa), and the society for personality and social psychology (spsp). Cos hopes to convert these to formal partnerships in 2015. - cos has several journal and funder endorsements of the osf. Recommending journals include perspectives on psychological science, psychological science, journal of experimental social psychology, and the european journal of personality. Recommending funders include ljaf and the sloan foundation. - in november 2014, cos hosted a meeting of 50 researchers and editors of social science journals to develop best practice guidelines for transparency practices. The meeting was co-organized by marcia mcnutt, the editor in chief of science magazine; donald green, professor of political science at columbia university; ted miguel, oxfam professor in environmental and resource economics at uc berkeley, and stuart buck of ljaf. - cos launched an ambassadors program to get open science advocates from the community involved with the cos mission. The ambassadors act as local information resources about cos and its activities, represent cos at conferences and meetings, and provide training on the osf and reproducible practices. So far, there are 11 ambassadors (by invitation only) and we are presently developing materials and training for this group. - cos established initial adopters of badges to acknowledge open data, open materials, and preregistration. These have been embraced by journal of social psychology, european journal of personality, psychological science, and social psychology with at least 5 other journals in planning phases including human computation and language learning. Psychological science started awarding open practices badges in january 2014. Approximately 25% of the articles accepted for publication in the first year earned one or more badge. - cos's other incentive service, registered reports, has been adopted in part or whole by 15 journals. To be considered for this list, the journal policy for registered reports must include at least these features: (a) peer review occurs prior to observing the outcomes of the research, and (b) manuscripts that survive pre-stud”
“No changes in the oversight or selection processes from the prior year.”
“The organization has reviewed and evaluated the relevant technical merits of each of its tax positions in accordance with guidance established by the fasb and determined that there are no uncertain tax positions that would have a material impact on the financial statements of the organization. The organization's tax filings will be subject to inspection by regulatory authorities for three years from the date of filing.”
