Mission

Courthouse Dogs Foundation promotes justice with compassion and improves the legal system by helping legal professionals successfully implement courthouse facility dog programs using best practices in this field. Courthouse facility dogs working with law enforcement agencies, child advocacy center staff and in criminal and family courts achieve this goal by helping vulnerable people participate in stressful legal proceedings.

Education of Legal Professionals: One of the Foundations primary missions is to educate the public and legal professionals about the benefits of incorporating facility dogs into legal proceedings. During 2019 the Foundation achieved this goal through the following activities: Held the 2019 Annual International Courthouse Dogs Conference in Bellevue, WA Maintained and updated our website to be current on recent appellate court cases and the ongoing development of best practices in this field. Washington State enacted facility dog legislation with the consulting assistance from Courthouse Dogs Foundation, and the US Senate unanimously passed the Courthouse Dogs Act in December 2019. California District Attorney Association workshop Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys Victim conference Traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina to educate attorneys, judges, and assistance dog trainers how to develop a model Courthouse Dog program Gave a workshop at the School of law, University College Cork, Ireland to introduce the use of facility dogs in the legal system Hosted a visit by Julie Morrison, from the Churchill Foundation of Australia to visit agencies to observe their facility dog programs Taught at the Office of Public Prosecutions in Victoria and Victim Services, New South Wales Department of Justice Plenary session and workshop at the Victim Services Europe Annual Conference Workshop for the National District Attorney Association Summer Summit$67,918-
Training and Technical Assistance for Governmental and Nonprofit Agencies: The Foundations staff provides training and technical assistance to professionals working in the legal system that contact the organization for answers to questions about how to implement a courthouse dog program. During 2019 the Foundation assisted in the placement of 44 facility dogs throughout the United States and Canada and one in Australia.$22,219-
Support to Assistance Dog Organizations: With the increasing demands for facility dogs it is very important for our Foundation to support the assistance dog organizations that breed, raise and train the dogs and their legal professional handlers. During 2019, we collaborated with many assistance dog organizations by helping with facility dog placements. In addition to attending the Assistance Dog International conference in Indianapolis, we provided in person consultations to Assistance Dogs Northwest Righteous Pups Assistance Dogs Australia Irish Guide Dogs HandiChiens Bocalan Argentina Guide Dog Foundation/Americas Vet Dogs Prison Pet Partnership program Brigadoon Service Dogs Helping Paws$9,792-
