Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Education of Legal Professionals: One of the Foundation's primary missions is to educate the public and legal professionals about the benefits of incorporating facility dogs into legal proceedings. During 2015 the Foundation: Held our third International Courthouse Dogs Conference, which was attended by over 120 legal professionals many of whom received continuing legal education credits required by their bar associations. Maintained and updated our website to be current on recent appellate court cases and the ongoing development of best practices in this field. Educated over a thousand legal professionals at presentations at the 2015 Arkansas Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect, the Canadian Association of Child and Play Therapists, the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts 52nd Annual Conference, and online webinars. Sent out 60 introductory DVDs to criminal justice and child advocacy professionals.$41,545-
Training and Technical Assistance for Governmental and Nonprofit Agencies: The Foundation's staff spends most of their daily activity providing training and technical assistance to people who contact the organization for answers to questions about how to implement a courthouse dog program. Most of this is done over the phone or by email. During 2015, the Foundation assisted 48 agencies with program development. This effort resulted in 27 new courthouse facility dogs in the United States in 2015. On-site training and technical assistance to 13 agencies was the most intensive work done by the Foundation in 2015. This included travel to and throughout the states of Arkansas, Hawaii, Idaho, Washington, Alabama, Michigan, South Carolina, Colorado, California, and Texas.$38,552-
Support to Assistance Dog Organizations: With the increasing demands for facility dogs, it is very important for our Foundation to support the assistance dog organizations that breed, raise and train the dogs and instruct their legal professional handlers. This requires educating them about this particular placement and promoting their non-profit organizations so that they can acquire the funds to continue their work. During this past year, we provided guidance for placements from seven different assistance dog organizations accredited by Assistance Dogs International.$6,653-
Facilitate Scientific Research on Courthouse Facility Dogs: The utilization of facility dogs in legal proceedings is still in its infancy and subject to legal challenges. Providing the courts with scientific data that supports the need for the dog is important. To advance this need, we continued to work with graduate students around the country to put them in touch with agencies utilizing courthouse facility dogs and mentored them in their projects.$2,084-
