| AAsheville Movement Community, Inc. (AMC) during 2018 hosted three free-form movement events per week in service to an economically and socially diverse local community. Each event included a review of the organization's event guidelines in order to encourage participation through self-expression and safe free-form movement. Participants ranged from children under supervision of their parents to persons aged 75 and older, and efforts were made so that, if possible, those coping with particular physical limitations might feel welcome to attend. Our regularly scheduled events served about 6,572 (non-unique) attendees this year, with special events serving 1,228 for a total of 7,800 (non-unique).Volunteers and elected participants continued to refine the organizations personnel and governance infrastructure, both to create opportunities for participation while preserving the system of checks and balances, but also with an eye to reducing excessive administrative overhead and improving the experience of community members who do not serve in organizational roles. Accordingly, the format of the open community gatherings was shifted to be focused more on connection and feedback than on governance. Pathways for direct participation in organizational decision making remain, and plans and strategies for improving them have been identified. AMC hosted three Dancers Gatherings (including the Seed Fund Raiser) to help engage and support the community in participating in AMCs operational and organizational decision making, and to open a more personal pathway to feedback with the community. Several volunteers were trained to hold leadership positions such as Room Coordinators, which became nominally compensated in order to support sustainable participation from the community. It is estimated that over 1,100 volunteer hours were contributed to the organizations mission and events in 2018. In October of 2018, AMC began a smoothly managed transition to a new larger but also affordable venue, a local school gymnasium at Evergreen Community Charter School, and an annual contract was executed at the end of the year. The new venue has provided facilities better suited to childcare, and we have put significant effort into improving our free childcare offerings that welcome an intergenerational community and support children, families and parents. We improved our standard of care and standardized the number of providers in proportion to the number of children served. Over 500 (non-unique) children attended our events that had childcare, averaging 11 children on each occasion.Concurrent with the transition, we initiated significant research and fundraising to explore a possible permanent future home for AMC, as our need to move every few years has been challenging for organizers and the community. The shortage of well-sized, affordable, community focused venues in Asheville is a significant hurdle to venue stability. At the end of 2018 we launched our first five digit fundraising campaign and raised more than $10,000 in funds for our Seed Fund, set aside specifically for developing a permanent home via either a multi-year lease, long-term partnership with an aligned organization, or the purchase or construction of a venue that AMC would own. In the process, we identified the need for a strategic plan for annual fundraising as well.2018 continued and strengthened the theme of extra-organizational and inter-community collaborations. There were eleven special events, including three live music dances staffed by local musicians. We continued working with Warren Wilson College to provide free dances to their students, through eight special events this year. We again collaborated with a mission aligned nonprofit, Our VOICE, to raise about $1,200 in funds on their behalf via two events, one of which took place downtown in front of the Asheville City government buildings, helping raise awareness for their cause of supporting victims of sexual assault in the local area.
