| Asheville Movement Community, Inc. during 2015 hosted three weekly free-form movement events in service to an economically and socially diverse, local community. Each event included a review of the organization's event guidelines in order to encourage participation through self-expression and safe free-form movement. Participants ranged from children under supervision of their parents to persons aged 70 and older, and efforts were made so that, if possible, those coping with particular physical limitations might feel welcome to attend. All in all, our regularly scheduled events served about 8,229 attendees this year.Volunteers and elected participants continued to refine the organizations personnel and governance infrastructure, both to create opportunities for participation and to preserve the system of checks and balances. This involved creation of a quarterly open meeting and a meeting circle dedicated to staff support. These developments were accomplished through cooperative and consent-based methodologies that allowed affected individuals to participate in their creation and implementation.During this year, three new people began and completed our fee-free training program to become movement event facilitators, and one other person began the program. In addition, one new person began and completed our training program to become a volunteer room coordinator. As in the prior year, each meeting of volunteers included an educational component that promoted authentic, peaceful and effective communication for consent-based decision-making. Ongoing attention was given to building such skills in all persons doing work or policy-making for the organization, with a focus on sustainable practices. The organization continued to elicit guest members to the management Core Circle from community participants throughout the year, inviting one new member to participate in decision-making for a five-meeting term. The organization also convened its third annual community meeting in October. Participants were invited to dialogue about several topics related to the organization's growth and development, including volunteerism, developing relationships with other nonprofit organizations, accessible governance and financial sustainability. Participants were also provided with current information about the organization's finances, staff and operations. It is estimated that an overall 1,821 volunteer hours were contributed to the organization's efforts during the year.Finances became a greater focus of the organization's efforts in 2015 as a result of decreased attendance and the rapidly-changing local economy. Efforts were made to balance several priorities: earmarking/accumulating emergency reserves; adapting to increased venue and operating costs; and continuing to work toward fair and balanced compensation. The organization maintained a flexible ticket price range with consideration for affordable admission costs, and also continued to offer volunteer opportunities involving de minimis benefits, to help reduce overall expense burdens for interested participants.The organization also provided a professional development scholarship for the Executive Director to complete the Duke Certificate in Nonprofit Management, coordinated locally by WNC Nonprofit Pathways. The program consisted of 72 class hours over five core areas, which were intended to provide a structured and rigorous grounding in the establishment, operation and continuation of a successful nonprofit. The organization's Events Coordinator also completed this certificate program using his own funds.The organization again increased its efforts to raise awareness of its services in the community through networking, outreach and collaboration with community-based and community-focused organizations. As a result, the organization prepared to host its first fundraiser in collaboration with the Asheville Masonic Temple in support of Our VOICE, a local nonprofit serving individuals in Buncombe County affected by sexual assault and abuse. Other outreach continued via: our third annual public participatory production at the Wild Goose Festival; our second annual collaboration in offering a campus event that was free to Warren Wilson College students; our second annual facilitation of a children's movement workshop at the Faerie Arts Festival; a seniors movement workshop at the WNC Council on Aging's Successful Aging conference, offered by our facilitators; and public participatory productions at both the Southeast Wise Women's Fall Conference and LEAF Community Arts' Fall Festival. | $47,448 | - |
