“Form 990 review the 990 is prepared by the organization's accounting personnel. An independent accounting firm reviews the 990. After the 990 is reviewed by the independent accounting firm, it is then reviewed by members of children international's executive management and accounting personnel. Each member of the organization's board of directors receives a copy of the entire 990 and attached schedules. They are given a one- to two-week period during which each has an opportunity to review and comment on the information included in the return. If changes are needed as a result of the review, the draft is returned and updated to reflect the needed changes and redistributed to the board for a final review and then electronically filed with the irs.”
“Monitoring compliance with conflict of interest policy every employee is asked to review the organization's conflict of interest policy annually and disclose if there are any conflicts which need to be communicated to the organization. The officers and directors are required to sign a statement representing that they are not a party to any relationship that would create a conflict of interest between the officer/director and the organization. If a potential conflict of interest does occur, the individual will be asked to abstain from voting and may be asked to leave the room during the discussion. The organization's policies prohibit doing business with any company that is owned or controlled by a director or officer or in which an officer or director or member of his/her family has a substantial financial interest.”
“Compensation of ceo volunteer members of the organization's board of directors (all directors who are not employees) comprise a compensation committee which is responsible for reviewing and approving annually any changes to employee compensation. Each year a report is prepared by a third-party consultant who gathers market and other comparative data and reports the results of such review and recommends any changes to the organization's compensation structure. The ceo, vice president of finance and vice president of global programs compensation is specifically reviewed within the report for analysis and determination by the compensation committee. The review was performed in may 2018.”
“Availability of documents the organization provides its governing documents and conflict of interest policy to the public upon request. The organization's 990 and financial statements are published on the organization's website and made available upon request.”
“Description of organization's mission we connect people around the world in the fight to end poverty. Working together, we invest in the lives of chidlren and youth, build the healthy environments they need to thrive, and empower them to create lasting change in their own lives and communities.”
“Program service accomplishments line 4a ------- children international creates personal, transformative and impactful relationships and offers supporters a way to invest in the holistic development of a child with the ultimate focus on employability to help its graduates break the cycle of poverty. This is done through locally staffed community centers and volunteers. Children international has set forth a vision of bringing people together to end poverty for good. The organizations goal is to eradicate poverty in the life of every child and person involved with children international. The organization connects people all over the world, facilitating strong relationships and partnerships across socioeconomic and cultural boundaries. Children international believes everyone shares this basic human right: to live free from poverty for good. Its approach to achieving this vision is focused on five specific core areas: exhibiting healthy behaviors, using health services, increasing education, becoming empowered and becoming employed. Through its programs, the organization strategically provides the services, training and opportunities children and youth need to become productive adults. Using health services children international helps children and youth build a foundation for a better future - and that starts with safety and good health. Thus, its programs promote healthy behaviors and using health services such as going to the doctor and dentist, preventing and treating disease and illness, and connecting sponsored children with other much-needed medical resources. Exhibiting healthy behaviors supplementing its health initiatives is its nutrition rehabilitation program. This approach targets undernourished children ages 3-11 through an intensive nutrition rehabilitation program. Children who are moderately or severely undernourished are enrolled in a feeding program to facilitate rapid improvements in health and nutritional status. Parents and other caregivers are enrolled in a nutrition education program and receive instruction on the nutritional value of locally available foods, low-cost meal preparation and prevention of malnutrition through proper care of sick children. Children will stay in the program for at least two months or until they have maintained at-risk or normal weight. The adolescent health program addresses the specific needs of adolescents by providing accurate, comprehensive information on the topics of reproductive health, substance abuse and essential life skills. Youth are engaged in the program through interactive workshops conducted by children international staff and youth co-facilitators. The program focuses on promoting preventive health behavior related to safe sex, contraceptive choices, pregnancy prevention and dealing with peer pressure in the case of substance abuse. In a number of agencies, newly trained youth also practice their skills and reinforce new knowledge as they conduct presentations and engage in 1-to-1 peer education with fellow youth in the community, sometimes through forming clubs. This program incorporates life skills, giving youth confidence and the ability to make healthy sexual and reproductive choices. Increasing education depending on local needs, children international incorporates a variety of techniques to support children's educations. For example, in areas where access to books and quality education is limited, it provides libraries and tutoring programs. Children international provides a variety of assistance to children and youth to support enrollment and completion of school. Based on the greatest needs of families in specific locations, children international provides assistance such as school uniforms, school supplies, school fees, tuition and transportation costs. As youth progress through secondary school, scholarships are availabe to support the increased education costs of upper secondary school. Becoming empowered the unrelenting stress of poverty can hinder”
“Program service accomplishments continued line 4b ------- community centers & caring adults children international provides its most comprehensive programs within its community centers. Newer state-of-the-art facilities have specific youth rooms and areas, which are separate from the gathering spaces for younger children, to encourage participation and enhance youth activities. While buildings are important, they aren't what make children international's programs a success; it's the people who invest in the children and youth who make the difference. Local volunteers globally, more than 9,000 individuals volunteer in support of children international. These trained volunteers - typically the parents of sponsored children and youth - conduct family visits in surrounding neighborhoods, are the first to know about local and domestic situations and serve as an invaluable conduit of information and knowledge. These individuals also support programming that teaches children and youth how to organize projects and be leaders. Then, these dedicated adults encourage youth to give back through tutoring younger children and leading community-improvement projects. It is not unusual for volunteers to serve for decades - well after their own children have graduated from children internationals program. Professional staff the organization's community center workforce is comprised of in-country nationals, including every doctor, dentist, nutritionist, agency director, teacher and librarian. These professionals speak the native language and dialect and understand the local challenges, customs and belief systems. Alliances and partnerships collaboration is the key to providing effective, economical humanitarian relief. That's why children international is committed to securing partnerships and product donations. This additional support allows children international to provide a higher volume of direct assistance to children and their families. This year, children international again served as a toms giving partner. Through this special partnership, new pairs of toms shoes were given to children around the world. Shoes protect children and youth from injury, as well as soil-based parasites that enter through bare feet, while also promoting regular school attendance and easing families' financial burdens. Other partners of children international include the clean the world foundation, which distributes hygiene kits to aid in sanitation and health efforts; and houghton mifflin, which provides books. Children international has worked collaboratively with the u.s. Peace corps, usaid and other organizations. Its agencies also work in country with local governmental agencies, schools and universities, as well as businesses and other nongovernmental organizations. Impacting the broader community community centers may provide the most robust offering of children international's programming, but its efforts also benefit the surrounding communities. Following are highlights from children internationals broader development efforts around the world. Raising public awareness children international delivers a variety of communication tools to educate the public about the plight of children and youth living in poverty and the solutions children international offers. These tools include journeys magazine, digital newsletters, white papers, speaking presentations, blog posts, educational fliers/brochures and press releases. Together, these efforts are designed to inform the public and raise awareness of the impact that even one person can have in lifting those in need out of their impoverished circumstances. Transforming sponsors' lives sponsorship is far more than an effective funding model. At its core, sponsorship is a shared experience between an individual contributor and an individual beneficiary. While the organization's programs focus on improving the lives of those living in poverty, the organization also recognizes the positive impact the relationship b”
