“Form 990 review the 990 is prepared by the organization's accounting personnel. An independent accounting firm reviews the 990. After the 990 is reviewed by the independent accounting firm, it is then reviewed by members of children international's executive management and accounting personnel. Each member of the organization's board of directors receives a copy of the entire 990 and attached schedules. They are given a one- to two-week period during which each has an opportunity to review and comment on the information included in the return. If changes are needed as a result of the review, the draft is returned and updated to reflect the needed changes and redistributed to the board for a final review and then electronically filed with the irs.”
“Monitoring compliance with conflict of interest policy every employee is asked to review the organization's conflict of interest policy annually and disclose if there are any conflicts which need to be communicated to the organization. The officers and directors are required to sign a statement representing that they are not a party to any relationship that would create a conflict of interest between the officer/director and the organization. If a potential conflict of interest does occur, the individual will be asked to abstain from voting and may be asked to leave the room during the discussion. The organization's policies prohibit doing business with any company that is owned or controlled by a director or officer or in which an officer or director or member of his/her family has a substantial financial interest.”
“Compensation of ceo volunteer members of the organization's board of directors (all directors who are not employees) comprise a compensation committee which is responsible for reviewing and approving annually any changes to employee compensation. Each year a report is prepared by a third-party consultant who gathers market and other comparative data and reports the results of such review and recommends any changes to the organization's compensation structure. The ceo, vice president of finance and vice president of global programs compensation is specifically reviewed within the report for analysis and determination by the compensation committee. The review was performed in april 2016.”
“Availability of documents the organization provides its governing documents and conflict of interest policy to the public upon request. The organization's 990 and financial statements are published on the organization's website and made available upon request.”
“DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION'S MISSION Children International is a leader in the movement to eradicate poverty. From toddler to young adulthood, we surround kids with a caring team, a safe place and a clear path out of poverty through programs focused on health, education, empowerment and employment. Our supporters are inspired as they see children radically change their lives and create a ripple effect that impacts their families and communities for generations to come.”
“Program service accomplishments line 4a ------- children international creates personal, transformative and impactful relationships and offers supporters a way to invest in the holistic development of a child with the ultimate focus on employability to help its graduates break the cycle of poverty. This is done through locally staffed community centers and volunteers. Children international believes there is great power in one person. The organization believes everyone can make a difference in the world. And, when everyone comes together to help end poverty, amazing things can happen. Ci calls this "unleashing the power of (every)one." to accomplish that, ci has set forth a vision that every child graduates from its program healthy, educated, employable and empowered to break the cycle of poverty. Its approach to achieving this vision is organized into several specific core areas: exhibiting healthy behaviors and using health services, increasing education, becoming employable and becoming empowered. Through these platforms, the organization strategically provides the material support, training and opportunities children and youth need to become productive adults. Exhibiting healthy behaviors and using health services children international helps kids build a foundation for a better future and that starts with kids being safe and healthy. Thus, its programs promote healthy behaviors and using health services such as going to the doctor and dentist, treating disease and illness, and connecting sponsored kids with other much-needed medical resources. Supplementing its health initiatives is its nutrition rehabilitation program. All sponsored children under age 12 are screened for malnutrition. Those diagnosed with moderate to severe malnutrition are enrolled in a feeding program that provides nourishing foods to quickly get them back to health. Ci staff also teaches parents how to identify the early stages of malnutrition and how to prepare low-cost, highly nutritious foods available from their local markets. This approach empowers families with the tools they need to help prevent malnutrition in the future. The organization's health programs also provide opportunities for leadership. As they mature, teens are encouraged to participate in children international's peer-to-peer enrichment program, the youth health corps. Lessons and activities educate teens about substance abuse and youth-related health issues such as birth control and safe sex. Then, these enthusiastic young leaders act as peer educators to share their knowledge. This multiplication effect ensures health information reaches thousands of people beyond children international's sponsored population. Increasing education depending on local needs, children international incorporates a variety of techniques to support children's education. For example, in areas where access to books and education is limited, it provides libraries and literacy programs. Where schools require uniforms, which can create barriers for poor families, it makes sure children have them. The organization also provides school-aged children with a variety of school supplies. And, when obstacles such as school fees, tuition and transportation costs limit students' access to education, it offers financial aid and scholarships. Becoming empowered without resilience and positive attitudes, children living in poverty will continue to have limited opportunities. That's why children international's approach includes specific programs designed to teach life and leadership skills during the particularly vulnerable teen years. The organization encourages youth to participate in leadership training so they learn to work effectively with others and develop self-confidence. Those who excel are likely to be elected to their local youth council. These select leaders determine the best use of youth empowerment funds that children international provides and then organize local community-improvement projects. Becaus”
“Ci's comprehensive youth programs offer a robust assortment of activities that help youth stay healthy, complete school or job training, find gainful employment and give back to their communities. Career readiness and into employment the organization's career readiness activities teach youth how to find work, interview effectively and be good employees. Children international's into employment program matches youth with trade schools and formal work experience opportunities, helping them acquire job skills that are in demand locally. Sports for development sports are a great way to promote gender equality. Ci's organized sports leagues also teach the value of healthy activity, teamwork and conflict resolution. Social and financial education parents in the organization's program frequently are unfamiliar with banks and other formal financial institutions. In response, children international teaches young people how to earn an income, open a savings account and budget money and other resources. The organization also educates teens about their rights and responsibilities. Youth health corps empowering youth with knowledge about their bodies gives them more control over their lives. The youth health corps employs peer education to raise awareness about reproductive health and substance abuse. Leadership training good leaders need training and opportunities to shine. Ci's programs equip youth with communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills. They also encourage participation in community-service projects. Hope scholarships access to education can be limited in the developing world; it's not unusual to pay tuition for secondary school, and additional schooling can be cost-prohibitive. Children international awards scholarships through its hope fund to qualified youth in need of education assistance.”
“Program service accomplishments continued line 4b ------- community centers & caring adults children international provides its most comprehensive programs within its community centers. Newer state-of-the-art facilities have specific youth rooms and areas, which are separate from the gathering spaces for younger children, to encourage participation and enhance teen activities. While buildings are important, they aren't what make children international's programs a success; it's the people who invest in the children and youth who make the difference. Local volunteers globally, more than 8,000 individuals volunteer in support of children international. These trained volunteers - typically the parents of sponsored children and youth - conduct family visits in surrounding neighborhoods, are the first to know about local and domestic situations and serve as an invaluable conduit of information and knowledge. These individuals also support programming that teaches children and youth how to organize projects and be leaders. Then, these dedicated adults encourage teens to give back by tutoring younger children and leading community-improvement projects. It is not unusual for volunteers to serve for decades - well after their own children have graduated from ci's program. Professional staff the organization's community center workforce is comprised of in-country nationals, including every doctor, dentist, nutritionist, agency director, teacher and librarian. These native professionals speak the local language and dialect and understand the local challenges, customs and belief systems. Alliances and partnerships collaboration is the key to providing effective, economical humanitarian relief. That's why children international is committed to securing partnerships and product donations. The additional support allows the organization to provide a higher volume of direct assistance to children and their families. This year, children international again served as a toms giving partner. Through this special partnership, three million new pairs of toms shoes were given to children around the world. Shoes protect children and youth from injury, as well as soil-based parasites that enter through bare feet, while also promoting regular school attendance and easing families' financial burdens. In addition, children international collaborated with the planet water foundation. Through this partnership, "aquatowers" were installed at children international community centers and schools in surrounding areas where waterborne diseases are prevalent. The two organizations also worked together to deploy mobile emergency water systems, which can be used during natural disasters to produce safe drinking water from open sources. Children international continues to work with planet water on a youth health ambassadors program designed to bring wash (water, sanitation and hygiene) education to thousands of impoverished people. The program uses a curriculum created by ci and planet water to equip members of ci's youth health corps to teach younger children and their caregivers about health and hygiene. The program includes five workshops on topics from germs and personal hygiene to hand-washing, safe water consumption and conservation. A mobile component allows youth leaders to educate children and adults at schools, churches and homes, as well as at ci community centers. Other partners of children international include the clean the world foundation, which distributes hygiene kits to aid in sanitation and health efforts; and houghton mifflin, which provides books. Children international has worked collaboratively with the u.s. Peace corps, usaid and other organizations. Its agencies also work in country with local governmental agencies, schools and universities, as well as businesses and other nongovernmental organizations. Impacting the broader community community centers may provide the most robust offering of children international's programming, but its eff”
