Activity 2

Touch therapy: this program certifies volunteers and their own dogs to provide pet-assisted therapy to various care facilities in the st. Louis metropolitan area. This year, the program certified 41 new teams. Volunteers visited over 50,000 people (patients, residents, family members, facility staff) in over 79 sites. The program reached over 38,800 adults and 11,400 children. All services and touch visits are at no cost to the individual and the facilities.

Activity 3

Paws for reading and education program:this program utilizes volunteers from the touch program who have a recommendation to participate in the paws for reading. Dogs are brought into classrooms and various other facilities in which the dog is used as an incentive for the children to read. This year, volunteers reached over 6,200 elementary age children (ages 5-13) in 21 local classrooms and in five branches of the st. Louis city public library. All services are provided at no cost to the library and to the elementary schools.support dogs has an outreach program, educating the general public on assistance dogs, etiquette, and basic dog interaction. This year, support dogs participated in 106 presentations, fairs, and parades, reaching over 6,700 directly and approximately 25,000 people indirectly.
